I find both the "Kamala Harris lost because she's too wokety-woke" and the "Kamala Harris lost because she didn't say she's a Communist and then clarify that she's the same kind of Communist I am" takes to be beneath contempt

The only fast take that makes sense to me is that incumbents worldwide have been voted out regardless of ideology as a backlash to post-Covid inflation.
I think that follows but it's still really worrying if "incumbent bad" is a stronger sentiment than "fascism bad". we managed the crisis better than anyone else, where does that leave policymaking if it wasn't enough?
@resnikoff.bsky.social do you feel the same way about neocon Bill Kristol?
Bill Kristol, a top Never Trump Republican, publicly urged Harris in the final weeks of the campaign to pitch a progressive, populist economic message against Trump and his army of billionaire supporters.
Nah. Calling bs on the "same kind of commie I am" nonsense.
She ran as a saber-rattling "top cop" law n order hawk who dropped universal healthcare and harped on the border. There's no form of leftist that had to split hairs to see she wasn't running from the left on literally anything.
Moreover, for years we've been told the Dems don't want the left's vote. Tacitly thru policy. Actively thru language (see: Biden's famous 2020 "then don't vote for me" reply to a Bernie voter).
Dems did some [new] math and made a conscious decision. Was clear from the Convention onward.
Stein winning in NC, Baldwin in WI, Slotkin in MI, etc all point to something a little different. The "global anti-incumbent wave" explanation might not be satisfying, but ultimately I think it's correct.
What I struggle with is how quiet people were about the racism and misogyny. We spent the last 8 years saying “trump encourages people to say their hateful thoughts out loud” but I never heard any such thoughts expressed toward Harris. So I was cautiously hopeful. Feels naive now
I think Harris should've taken more risks with policy proposals, but also, there are lots of reasons why she lost and Trump won--some of which are errors of her campaign, but also because of what the electorate sees in Trump (spoiler alert: it's the promise of more money).
And to feel good about themselves. I can’t look at these results without understanding the the underlying racist and sexist caste we exist in. More money is what they tell themselves but I guarantee if Harris given out free checks, they still would have rejected her
Biden did a great job rebuilding the economy but lacked the ability to, on a consistent basis, sell his accomplishments. The media seemed to have completely forgotten about Covid. So it boiled down to eggs cost more. Why? I don't know, Biden, I guess.
Harris never had a chance.
Fabricating a political view to make us commies look bad is also beneath contempt.
Anyone who says they’re communist and Harris’s lack of self-labeling as a one lost her the election is either running a very sad op for the right wing or can’t add percentages (likely both).
I actually had a conversation with a white maga 60 yr old Wharton school graduate and he ended up losing it and calling me names! There’s no saving them! The 🍊is going to have to shrivel
She lost because Trump cheated. He alienated most of the people who would have voted for him, then announced that he didn't need votes & had all the votes he needed. I'm betting the numbers were pulled out of thin air by Trump's minions.
That's why Rs won both houses of congress.
America lost because we were fighting the information war against Russia, Saudis, RW media radio and tv, X, Crypto Bros, evangelical ministers. They got my family and friends on every platform and very little got through to them. Trust me I tried, they just were saturated in lies. IMHO
I'm more of the Kamala Harris lost when her campaign told us to lay off the couch and weirdo jokes and embrace Liz Cheney. Woke communism had nothing to do with it. Sending in the hall monitors to break up the party did.
I find it hilarious that people are actually thinking trump won without cheating! He's NEVER not cheated at anything in his lifetime! He cheated in 2020 but still lost! Which is why he would never concede! He thinks if you cheat you have to win!
Several elections ago, I established a personal rule to ignore anyone opining "this outcome proves the thing I was already sure was true." It has served me well.
Failing repeatedly to heed warnings from people representing major caucuses that traditionally vote Democrat in favor of straddling a middle ground didn't help.
What helped even less was allowing for four years of Republican states to undermine electoral systems like in Georgia
Democrats like Harris and Buttigieg are incredibly smart technocrats. If we were Britain in the 1960s, they would be formidable rivals for Harold Wilson as Labour leader.
What we need is a Huey Long who can demonize the billionaires in language low-information Americans can understand.
I fucking hate how the left was so hopeful at the beginning of the week but now they're just pointing fingers at everyone.
The sad truth is that the only people that are to blame are the racists and sexists, and there are a lot of them in America. And we need to unite against them.
Which is why I am glad that The Onion bought InfoWars. Dem voters keep giving to Dem candidates, DNC or ACLU. Those donations are important--but GOP are playing the corporate/capitalism/media game better than us because they know if they consolidate power in media monopolies, they'll keep winning.
The other guy ate lunch and drank a Diet Coke while the capital was under siege and took top secret info and did God knows what with it. But sure, Harris was too woke. These are not equivalent, no matter how stupid pronouns.
I just read an article by a 24 yr old in New Republic blame Kamala for being neoconservative bc saving democracy isn’t important if you have to sit on stage w Liz Cheney!
Well you HAVE to have a theory for why it didn’t work out without any evidence beyond your own feelings, don’t you? +1 if your feelings are supported by right wing pundit who has a Substack. +2 if your feelings are supported by a podcaster. /s
Is "Kamala Harris lost because she lowered center-left turnout by not opposing genocide" an acceptable take or does that equate, for you, to saying that she should have said she's a Communist?
I've seen (and blocked) a not-insignificant number of "progressives" who claimed they didn't vote because "Kamala doesn't support Gaza". Seriously. 😑 Over 14 MILLION of them stayed home instead of voting. 14 MILLION. I hope they start paying their student loans. 😁
It’s really hard to look at the post pandemic shellacking ruling parties have taken and not conclude that post covid recovery was a political Kobayashi Maru.
Kamala Harris lost because republicans are idiots. End of story. This was a game to far too many of them. Now they can pay the price right along with everyone else. Did they thinks they would be "special"?
After reading all of the comments on this, it's a combo of everything.
It's fact salad.
It's not going to be one factor that fits all. You have to take in the fact that there's hundreds of reasons why people didn't vote for her, but the main one we need to focus on is possible rigging...
The only criticism I’ve heard so far is that there was too much time spent reaching out to conservative white women in suburbs / with Liz Cheney. And even then WTF do I know. Clearly we are a racist, misogynistic stupid nation and it was too much to over come.
This is factually true. She campaigned with fucking Liz Cheney. If we want any hope of fighting what’s about to happen, it’s time liberals stop denying reality.
Trick question - she didn't have any policy proposals! What she did do is work overtime to rehabilitate the fucking Cheneys and GWB, in the hopes of capturing the ever-illusive "moderate anti-Trump Republican" vote
She wanted to beat Trump, and those guys all were saying "Trump is bad." Trump was/is an existential threat. At least some people (including me) think that, and we now can likely say goodbye to any free and fair elections in the future
And so getting in bed with former foes was seen as worth it
It's a fact that the Democratic Party has been drifting rightward for decades. I don't know what she could have done differently, or what anyone should have done differently.
But the Dems always bend over backwards to never appear "liberal."
It is demonstrably and laughably false that Democrats have been trending rightward. They're moving leftward, albeit more slowly than Rs are moving rightward.
(And that's in part because huge swathes of Democratic voters, mainly people of color, are much more moderate than white Democrats.)
It is not a fact at all. It is a talking point pushed by cranky people who don't know history. In what way was Biden to the right of Bill Clinton, just for example?
Bernie would have been creamed in 2016, sorry but that's a lie people tell themselves to pretend that Crazy Commie Bernie and his trips to Russia and the negative oppo deployed by Trump wouldn't have worked on the American people - they would, he'd have been creamed.
What i don't get. They get to be extreme right wing, MAGA(whatever that is) alt right, full on fascist, nazis
But say socialist or communist, and people have a f*ckin heart attach. And there's nothing saying you can't be those things. Nothing. Besides McCarthy
And now Trump.
While I agree with you, we can never be sure. What we can be sure is Bernie had two good shots at the Democratic nomination and couldn't win either. The unearned confidence of Bernie's cheerleaders of his imagined electoral power is something to behold.
If Trump has proven anything it's that negative oppo means precisely jack and shit. It's all about how you present your message and sell yourself, and Bernie was way better than any of the last three Dems at that. Bernie lost because the people who turn the money spigot don't like his policies.
⬆️ this! Also Sanders entire staff was made up of grifters, loons and kooks who had no experience on a national stage or campaign. The rewriting of Bernie bro history is tiresome. He wasn’t winning, particularly in the sunbelt or the south.
No one knows what would’ve happened in 2016 and anyone who tells you they do is intellectually dishonest
There were some signs that Bernie was reaching voters who were tricked by Trump’s populist messaging. It’s hard to say if that would’ve delivered a win
The Dems could have a taken a look at what his message was and integrated it more into the Party's message. Dems still act like Bernie was an embarrassment instead of the guy that reinvigorated DSA and gave us AOC, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, etc.
And LBJ had to do a lot of arm-twisting and horse-trading (including often with Republicans), because a large part of the Democratic caucus in Congress consisted of unreconstructed KKK fanboys/members. The 1960s Democratic Party wasn't exactly stocked to the brim with committed socialists.
Bernie himself was a massive fan of the Biden White House specifically because it was so much further left on labor and the economy than anything from Democrats in decades. He was Biden's most ardent shooter even after that last debate he did with Trump.
This right here, bread and butter, jobs, economy, how are we going to help the working man. That's the winning ticket. Dems this time fell into the trap of identity politics again.
Trump's message hammered immigration, tax cuts, and the economy, the kind of stuff Bernie is big on.
Oh fuck off, the Kamala campaign spent approximately zero time focusing on "identity politics".
Biden's policies were great from a Bernie perspective, but they clearly weren't the winning ticket. Trump won because the average voter thinks the economy is terrible right now.
Whether you want to blame messaging, or the sudden cut of all those temporary COVID relief measures, or Biden not going far enough, or the average voter simply being a moron is up to debate. But clearly, Biden's focus on helping the common working man did not impress him.
The Democrats are, or rather were, far further left than Clinton was 30 years ago. However, the left doesn't every say "Okay, that's good, now let's work on getting this done," but is always "If you don't do what I say, when I say it, I'll throw you to the right and let them eat you."
Lefties will backstab the center to punish it at the slightest provocation then wonder why the center doesn't like them very much.
Maybe if lefties actually lived up to their ideology rather than use it as justification for bullying everyone who doesn't agree with them, they might get somewhere.
I’m old enough to remember when there were 60 D senators and 20 of them were of the Manchin/Sinema breed. That was 15 years ago. Since then positions in the mainstream of the party include support for universal healthcare, radical change in support for LGBT rights, and expansionary fiscal policy
If you’re telling me “Dems have been shifting right for decades” you’re either not paying attention or trying to lie to me, and I don’t appreciate either.
No, I don't remember Bernie. It is 2024 and I have excised that name from my mental timeline entirely to keep from forever relitigating 2016. It is wonderful and liberating and I recommend it to everyone, including you.
you're correct that neither is true. she never drifted to the right, she started off there by playing off of their border rhetoric and only got worse during/after the convention. and she wasn't friends with billionaires, she does whatever they want but they don't particularly like her much
She did drift to the right. You can debate whether thats why she lost, but she did definitely drift to the right. Especially so if you consider her 2020 primary positions, but even in the past few months her rhetoric became distinctly more conservative.
We need to come to grips with the fact that majority of Americans are misinformed, and don't really understand what is going on.
I keep saying this, but I will say it again. If Americans need to be convinced not to vote for a rapist and a criminal, then the flaw lies in the populace. Period.
If she had campaigned as a leftist it probably would've been even worse. Americans are so brainwashed about Communism that they think it's worse than Nazism. I've had people tell me we had to do Operation Paperclip because defeating the Commies was more important
IMHO, we lost because a significant number of the subcomponents of our country are too sexist and/or racist to vote in their own best interest. Feeding into that was a declining level of education in the electorate and a continuing historical love of conspiracy theories.
Every. Single. Election. in my 40 years on this rock, this has been true, though. This is the first time youths, Latino/Latinx, and other demos broke hard for R, while percentages among older voters actually fell AWAY from R. Y’all have to get better at diagnosing what’s actually going on.
I think people saying this stuff might not realize what they really want to say is, what was the distilled vision for America? We almost had one with "we are not going back" ... I'm sure I've missed something that was buried on a policy website somewhere.
Looks like economic anxiety and migrant crime was a big factor.
Republican messaging is simple and relentless, via Fox, social media, right wing bloggers. They can make up chit (like Haitians eating cats) and run with it.
she lost because the median apolitical swing voter hates inflation and thinks Trump is good at business. I really don’t think it’s much more complicated than that
Worth mentioning, not a single incumbent democratic government anywhere in the world won their election in 2024. Liberal, Conservative they all got mulched. Which says a lot I think about how fears about Inflation/Immigration/Whatever are perpetuated digitally no matter what's actually happening.
The bottoming out in urban liberal bastions is 100% a rent issue and if Dems don't pivot away from scarcity and toward abundance we will all die as people move to conservative heatsinks.
Anyone who blames Kamala has no idea what they are talking about.
Imo: Joe Biden should have honored his word and not sought a second term. We would have had an actual convention and if she won the nom she could have actually campaigned for more than 100 goddam days.
No, both are wrong but only one group has power and its the purple district dems who want to throw trans people under the bus and not the annoying tankies who and annoying but are further away from power and relevance than any group has ever been.
Tbh I don't think that there was anything that Harris or any other democrat could've done to win this election. I think that the electorate is just conservative right now and it's going to be that way for a while.
Conservative is one thing. Trump is another, and he can destroy institutions and send us into the darkness for another 100 years, like after Reconstruction.
I’m about a week away from giving anyone blaming the candidate who tried to warn us about the fascist instead of the people who voted for the fascist a Vulcan neck pinch. Always wanted to see if that worked.
I hate how many people try to justify the people who didn't vote for Harris. The truth is, if you didn't vote for Harris, you're a bad person and you should feel bad.
The main reasons she lost are because inflation drives people insane, because of our (purposely) broken media environment, and because of misogyny.
Any explanation that doesn’t center on those is wrong-headed or intellectually dishonest.
The Democrats obviously need to focus their messaging more on Chevron deference and what remains of Skidmore deference, because that's what everyone I know normally talks about.
I was on the leftist sides of tiktok and twitter. White leftists absolutely engaged in purity politics. If she said the right thing, she didn't say it the right way. If she said the right thing the right way, she did something else wrong that invalidated it. On and on and on. Exhausting.
Weird how only the first one actually exists, but I get Shitlibs have to always make up random bullshit to take a swing at any/every person who is even remotely left leaning rather than admit leftists could possibly have a point about anything.
I agree with all you say for one simple reason and this is my fast take ... this was NEVER about policies ... other than those core base ones regarding women and race
If people voted on policy, the results would have been drastically different. When you poll on actual policy, and you don't assign a political party to it, the D's policies poll much higher. This election was not about policies. It was about perception.
Biden was great at governing. He landed the plane. But he was by far the absolute worst messaging president I've ever seen. He lacked the ability to sell his accomplishments. He was too old for the public relations aspect. And he put Harris in an impossible position.
I can not believe how many on the left discussing nuances of trans issues etc when simply Trump did not have policies other than project2025 which Dems should have hammered and hammered and then dropped it ...
Maybe voting for Trump is just as delusional as voting for Brexit in GB. They believed all the simplified versions of reality, voted for people with deep character flaws and then found out by getting hit on the nose that travelling to the EU is more difficult and none of the problems has gone away.
And for the final results to actually come in! I think there's some part of the dramatic vote drop-off that's just, like, California being slow as hell to count, which won't change anything except maybe in the House. But some of the dooming on that's probably overstated.
the only fast takes that I don’t hate tend to be around: “it’s the media environment” or “Harris/Walz didn’t have enough time to make up for the messaging deficit caused by Biden deciding to run again and be seen as the head of the party” (which is also just a media problem)
One of these is expressed by the media establishment, most Dems, and everyone who just got schlonged (again) by the worst candidate in our country’s history; the other is an intentional straw man misstatement of “we should have tried appealing to the left instead of Trump’s base”
There were multiple factors but the biggest one I see is Biden's stink was still attached to her. Unfortunate but maybe the DNC will clean house finally. Who knows.
Kamala Harris lost because some of the dumbest people alive, incapable of even a modicrum of the most surface level critical thinking, voted for a fascist because eggs cost too much without understanding why.
Except the former is widespread, particularly among people of relative power and influence, while the latter is merely a projection you’ve conjured up for the appearance of balance.
I mean just looking at the numbers and people's explanations for why they didn't vote, she wasn't Sanders. It's crazy they're saying that again 8 years later.
No democrat could have won this election.
It wasn't a "who" thing" but an inequality thing.
The working class no longer has opportunity.
They want an Iron Man populist and the Trump/Musk combo fits their stupid bill.
Idk why we’re not focusing on the republicans choosing Trump, and the disinformation rotting people’s brain. Kamala was running a campaign against disinformation, which is hard. These people never leave their information ecosystem.
The only reason she lost was that the media allowed Trump to consistently lie and they put Kamala Harris to a higher standard than Trump! Ex: withholding the Jeffery Epstein interview tapes of 2017. Also the fact that she’s a woman.
Political science research indicates that most campaigns, most of the time, don't matter much in determining the result. Thus, most of these hot takes about what she could have done differently don't matter much either.
IMHO, she lost because she is a neoliberal capitalist doing what they do, protecting the donor class at all cost, and ignoring the majority of the base. Fascism objectively thrives under neoliberalism, regardless of the hat color.
The give them a bigger boogieman vs better policy strategy failed.
Biden should’ve announced he wasn’t running after the midterms so a full primary process could play out. Kamala ran an overall phenomenal campaign in impossibly challenging circumstances
OMG me too. They chose to vote for a monster. If his myriad crimes couldn't persuade them to turn away from that steaming pile of excrement, NOTHING she could have done would have turned them from him.
I genuinely don't care what the Dunning-Krugers have to say. She ran a phenomenal campaign that gave me the most hope I've had in 41 years. An intelligent, adorable, happy, hard-working badass that wanted better for all. Plus she likes weed and dancing. She's my president.
I’m sorry reality is too hard for you to accept. Just because it hurts your fee fees doesn’t mean anyone reflecting the state of it replaces you in the dipshit chair though. Pretty sure your pants are superglued to that fucker
By the way, hilarious how you had the nerve to claim you go around “promoting logical discussions” only for you to default to the exact same behavior I’d expect from any Trump Humper simply because facts hurt your feelings.
This is from 2020. She filled stadiums with hope. I don't believe the bullshit. I don't care to analyze why misogynists are misogynists and racists are racists
If we refuse to accurately analyze, we will continue to lose. Democrats can win even in racist, awful places. We’ve been doing it for more than a hundred years now. But not if we refuse to learn the lessons the (yes, deeply flawed) electorate teaches us.
The rage is good and justified (and also, who cares what I think, your rage is yours, not anyone else’s to approve or disapprove of). I’m just talking about how we win and fix this.
the demographics Trump's votes shifted, yes, but he didn't substantially change the total number of votes he got. Most of the difference between 2020 and now is that people who voted Dem last time didn't vote at all this time.
If you know that Democrats fall in love and Republicans fall in line, why the fuck is the DNC trying to get the love of Republicans or so called "moderates"?! Why are they so desperate to run the most boring candidate with focus group rhetoric every single time?
Is it because they didn’t vote or something else…..because I don’t believe they sat
it out. I can’t believe it. If that was the case then there is truly no hope for the American people.
People are working out their despair- sometimes its not great( but push back hard on the suggestions we jettison parts of our coalition)
it’s better to avert your eyes and concentrate on the Rs who desperately want us to splinter in infighting and remove all possibility of resistance to them
Now I’m hoping that the Dems have some plan for these next couple of months or…the utter despair will be hard to bear. Harris walked away so quickly, so easily, but surely this can’t be it.
The Dems are showing their colors as useless cowards. I truly hope liberals can learn that "just get blue back in power" didn't work last time, failed this time, and won't work in the future.
Harris and Buttigieg are very able, very smart technocrats and if we were in 1960s Britain, they would be formidable rivals to Harold Wilson for Labour leader.
We need a Huey Long - someone who can demonize the billionaires in language the low-information American people can understand.

Fuck the fuck off- too soon
That's why Rs won both houses of congress.
What helped even less was allowing for four years of Republican states to undermine electoral systems like in Georgia
Kamala Harris lost because Red Pill on YouTube and Rumble was heavily propagandized to young men.
Destiny (Steven) and VERY FEW others challenged Red Pill effectively. Destiny is problematic/addicted
We need Blue Pill creators to win the minds of Gen z boys.
This is my hill
What we need is a Huey Long who can demonize the billionaires in language low-information Americans can understand.

for example, reflexively punching a hippy every time the dems lose
One, some number of people decided that having a fascist dictator was acceptable as long as he's a white male.
Two, some people decided that having a fascist dictator was acceptable given the (false) promises that some things might be a bit cheaper...
I want to go and eat more pizza and fries now.
Forget all that other shit.

And so getting in bed with former foes was seen as worth it

Sanders would have been blown apart by the negative oppo they had and we have to stop pretending otherwise because we agree with his policies.
There were some signs that Bernie was reaching voters who were tricked by Trump’s populist messaging. It’s hard to say if that would’ve delivered a win

This is only the surface.
We have work to do.
"FUNK YOU I DONT WANT TO HEAR YOUR OPINION BECAUSE I DONT AGREE WITH IT OOF YOURSELF"
Republican messaging is simple and relentless, via Fox, social media, right wing bloggers. They can make up chit (like Haitians eating cats) and run with it.
That largely falls on the democrats. Economy is pretty good and getting better, current cost of living is global issue.
6 months he will be claiming credit for the Biden economy. Just like he did Obama's.
Imo: Joe Biden should have honored his word and not sought a second term. We would have had an actual convention and if she won the nom she could have actually campaigned for more than 100 goddam days.
Merrick Garland sucks.
The 2024 electorate sucked. White people sucked. Latino men sucked. Men under 28 came within only 2 points of sucking.
The Majority of American Voters? They Suck.
Dems could have run a Lincoln/Washington ticket and still would have lost, in this media environment.
Any explanation that doesn’t center on those is wrong-headed or intellectually dishonest.
#satire
I'd love to see them.
OoooOooooOooooo bread linesssss
crummmmbling infrastructure OooooEeeeeOooo
Americans: oh yea we have bread lines and crumbling infrastructure at home
Spectre: Jkjk I’m Kissinger’s ghost! A century wasn’t enough!
Nedward’s office: [Curb Your Enthusiasm theme plays]
Cool.
This guy must get his bank account hacked like once a week.
“Oh well golly, if your puppy’s vet needs my mother’s maiden name to do his lifesaving surgery then BY ALL MEANS, [email protected]!”
(Some want to be lied to so they can play the victim but spread the lie.)
This election is just the latest example proving the point
3 months isn't enough time to run a against someone as well known as Trump and he has been running since 9/11
Young men are disillusioned, and they mostly listen to Joe Rogan and other men’s rights podcasters
We are NOT better than this, despite what they say.
It wasn't a "who" thing" but an inequality thing.
The working class no longer has opportunity.
They want an Iron Man populist and the Trump/Musk combo fits their stupid bill.
They fing cheated.
I continue to pray they get found out!
The give them a bigger boogieman vs better policy strategy failed.
(This is a joke of course)
Biden was the only dude to ever beat Trump. Why do you think the media worked overtime to push him out?
Its called that because they hate "identity politics" aka not being racist
Seek help from a cult deprogrammer
But the sad thing is, she didn’t give enough people hope
18% less people voted for Democrats in this election. Most didn’t switch to Republican, they simply didn’t vote
It’s baffling but we need to figure out why so we can fix that issue
I don't give a single shit why they're angry little cowards and not one of them will touch me until I have rights again.
Honestly, I can’t relate
Most of those people didn’t switch to Republican. They weren’t motivated to vote for Democrats
Finding out why and how to fix that is important
But also 2020 ballots went to everyone. And without Covid and RBG dying, Trump would have been reelected.
Given the huge swings in Latino/a/x and Gen Z voters, I think a lot of voters did go from Biden to Trump.
"We're going to put a Republican in our cabinet!"
Who the fuck are you trying to appeal to? Democrats don't want that. Aren't you supposed to be exciting your base?
This is why I’m not into third parties. We need to take over the Dems because the people in charge are idiots
it out. I can’t believe it. If that was the case then there is truly no hope for the American people.
Bottom line is this admin is unpopular and didn't get credit for its successes, plus lots of blame for things they have no control over.
it’s better to avert your eyes and concentrate on the Rs who desperately want us to splinter in infighting and remove all possibility of resistance to them
We need a Huey Long - someone who can demonize the billionaires in language the low-information American people can understand.
