I'm so excited to carry my passport for domestic flights!
I do wonder how this affects checking in to one's flight via an app; also I wonder if a passport card qualifies. The State Department says it should, but, well. This is 2025 and the government is unreliable.

There are still fees, but they're different than a renewal
dang, that original act was a long time ago, in 2005!
Now... Papers, please!
I don't ever plan to apply for a RealID as I don't want my state to have my SSN. I also request that they do not store my photo in their database.
Still likely worth it, just FYI.
I have a passport, too, though.
One, the passport card is the same everywhere in the country so I feel like it’s quicker & easier for them to eyeball.
Two, if I screw up and leave it at security I can still drive when I get where I’m going. #DoneIt
I’ve only used my Passport ID at land crossings.
The problem is that there is no national identity document other than the passport on a federal level in the USA.

Once, when flying back from Barcelona to Zurich, I was asked.
Which wasn't a problem since I usually carry my identity card on me.
3. They might be building a database of those who have spoken against Agent Krasnov, in which case they will seize the passports of all American citizens
Ok, #3 seems unlikely. Nobody in Doggie is smart enough to build a simple SQL database.
1. They’ll use it to check your gender. If it’s not a match for what they think you are, TSA will seize it.
2. They will use it to check a woman’s last name. If name on passport and ID don’t match (ie due to marriage) TSA will seize it.
Papers, please.
So stupid. Hurry up and get my RealID to me.
That being said, the last time I flew we were still a democracy. So all bets are off.
Not holding my breath, considering.
So far the experience has been good - you can input your passport number on the airline website to make apps work easier.
(Weirdly I could do it because when I filed my change-of-address I used my street address where mail can't be delivered. So it was a pain getting it physically. My wife used our PO Box and can't get it & cant change address)
I'm a bit perplexed that you might still have been able to fly without ID, like back in the glory days of the late twentieth century.
Same trip a security guard let me on knowing that I had a knife in my hand baggage.
That worked out well.
Why the hell can't I fly within my own country without a passport-level document? That's insane.
I also wear shoes I can kick off and a plastic belt.
I got the passport card as a third option so I don't have to take my book anymore as well.
Keep them separate.
Texas took a long while to start issuing Real ID compliant licenses. 2 years ago they started a big push to change over, and I had to go in person with my passport to get my license renewed to a Real ID compliant one.
I had to submit my birth certificate to get the original passport somewhere back in the darkness of history and have kept my passport current... but I do use my passport for its intended purchase, as well.
