One reason Bluesky (still) works for news is that there’s no obvious, pervasive culture of misinformation. If someone you trust reshares something on, say, Syria, the odds that it’s a chud trying to troll people remains relatively low.

I took a quick look at the former site to see what was being said.. in a 3 minute look I saw more than a dozen posts claiming Assad's plane shot down leaving Syria. The site is absolutely useless.
Yes but my goodness more than half of wjs, wp nyt fox. Npr reports on foreign events is misinformation or misleading at best
Granted better than outright fake news but everything i read in mainstream English nowadays about china or Russia is silly and misinformation at best — rather usa propaganda
X is a disaster now. My old account there is mainly served stupid ads and shock videos of people being beaten, shot, or blown up. Anyone sharing real news has a ton of replies by people or bots denying reality and insulting the poster. It’s fucking gross.
Not all info can be verified or proven beyond doubt, and many things are subjective. I think trusted sources and reputation of who posts/shares/likes is more important than share/like count.
And we all keep each other honest and call it out respectfully when something’s off. I haven’t seen many people do anything maliciously. At least not yet. It’s definitely refreshing!
so far the only 'ouchie' has been some of the pic's that are more AI than real nature. I fall for those every time until I read the comments from photographers.
I saw a person post some post-election fantasy, and they were called out for lack of sourcing. I'd love to believe that the white hats are coming to save us, but staying grounded in reality is so important now.
The chud telling you that you are cheering ISIS? How many times do we have to be right before toy realize your bubble to force yourself in spews constant propaganda?
Hey Philip, Im just on my 2nd visit to Blue sky, but there is an equal amount of hate here on this platform as on any other. Additionally, there is an obvious, pervasive culture of misinformation centered upon the believe in the superiority of liberal orthodoxy and rejection of other views.
This a really good point! I've definitely witnessed varied, competing interpretations of the events (3-4 diff types). But despite the diversity of opinions, everyone agrees on the basic plot points and facts on the ground. No alternative facts, but the variety as means its not an echo chamber.
This is a true statement. For example, take what Trump said about birthright citizenship claiming the US is the only one that offers and accounts like Libs of TikTok running with it treating it as fact as well as the followers.
I've often thought that the simplest way to "fix" social media is to reject posts that include links from questionable sources. Or at least to have an option that filters those posts (and posters) out by default.
The intent may not be malicious but that’s no reason to rely on an undocumented, un-sourced statement on this platform either. If the statement intrigues you but has no source, consider locating a source independent of the post.
Although still a lot of misinformation during fast-breaking news. Hundreds of posts in my timeline last night about Assad's helicopter crashing, for example.
I agree. That’s why I have to go back to X sometimes just to see what the topics of the day are. Not sure why blue sky doesn’t do something like this? Is that cause they would feel that they are then pushing an algorithm at all of us? That seems the most likely answer
This is true currently, but it won't remain true. The russian trolls and random grifters are already showing up. The exodus to Bluesky is not going to stop, and we have to, therefore, remain vigilant of disinformation spreaders, as time goes on.
As long as Bluesky stays outside the grip of US capitalism we're good. I know someone has to pay for the tech and infra, but maybe we don't need billionaires for that.
be careful we are now also finding that some people at top of big accounts are creating moderation lists that mute good people so there agenda can gate keep
this is a bigger issue here of people put on lists that should not
see no fellas/nafo/ukrainians he supports on mark hamills feed as example
I had to look up ‘chud’, and found :
“A person, usually male, who holds sociopolitical views seen as reactionary; strong connotations of being an incel with low emotional intelligence.’
I hate being so old that people are unaware that this word derives its meaning from the absolutely charming 1984 film “C.H.U.D.,” whose title acronym stands for “Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers.”
The reason Bluesky works is because it's not owned and controlled by billionaires who want to control what you read and how you think. People need to buy and use media that is not controlled by a billionaire. Look at the Philadelphia Inquirer owned by a non-profit!
Yes, it is. That's why I say to buy the Philadelphia Inquirer, it's owned by a non-profit organization. The Lenfest Institute is the non-profit owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
True. Personally I believe that when MAGA troll infiltrates, we know they will, the minute we find them, ban them; one shot one kill; no second chances. Also personally, when I’m speaking to someone and he says “the jab’” I cut them off. Hold that thought… I hope they figured out I wasn’t returning
I haven't heard anything about the aliens controlling the deep state lizard monsters cavorting with Bigfoot to force the children to make pizzas in the basements of satanic worshippers of Baal.....and I'm grateful
This feels like the story behind the Stepford Wives. I know it sounds silly but hear me out. It feels like there are strong people that did stand up to Trump and all of a sudden they changed... just like in the Stepford wives. The one stayed strong and then all of a sudden her friend changed
One of my concerns is that if RFK Jr is confirmed, how will we all get pertinent true information about vaccines and viruses and such like covid? The truth will be hidden with him at the helm of health. Will there be someone with us that will get all that information to us?
And I think the main reason for that is that you don't really see any sock-puppet accounts, and definitely not any with extended reach for the low price of 8 dollars per month.
I hope that continues to be the case.
So far. There are lots of GPT powered reply bots attempting to confuse things by disagreement with everything, but original posts sharing info seem to be in good faith.
The abiliy to tailor your feed to “just” those who, you have semblance of trust in is huge. I get exactly what I ask for, and if I dont like what I see…”I” can make a change
Main reason I keep my account small. Getting content I like, interesting and informative people for the most part. One troll, cut him off, didn't block but hasn't bothered me since. Detected a bot and told bot that syntax, and word choice "humans" for people was bot talk. Bot immediately blocked me
I really don't think that's meaningfully true. Yes, those of us who've been here a while have a pretty well-established trust network, but in the last month we've watched all the usual suspects (both grift and enemy action) doing their best to flood the zone and make this place just like the others.
Also, if on the off-chance someone does share information that turns out to be false, they don't recieve ridicule or insults for it. 9 times out of 10 it's a "whoops sorry" and everyone moves on.
When it happens at the other place, you better have some popcorn handy, you're in for a show.
It would be nice to get more news feeds on BlueSky. Hopefully over time it will be so. Maybe even a link to all news feeds could possibly then be looked into.
Maybe. But even if the content is compelling, if I don't have reason to trust it's being placed in the right (or any) context, I feel an obligation to be skeptical.
We must be active in blocking and reporting. This is still a small team and I think it's overwhelmed by the growth.
This small number of pople is doing a great job so far!
What the average Joe doesn’t get about Bitcoin is how it will be utilized in a world economy…no rules, no guidelines. Government sanctions lose their powers. If I were a pure criminal type, I would 100% live in Bitcoin. Deny as we will, it’s here to stay. And dangerous.
Yep. The only people who really need untraceable digital currencies are criminals. There is a reason that ransomeware criminals want to be paid in bitcoin.
You're not wrong, but we still need more in-depth reporting. This has been truly a breath of fresh air! Some of our media sources still provide information that may be somewhat slanted. I do realize that this has been the case for quite a while though.
True. Caution is always warranted but thank goodness many of those sharing news here, now, established solid reputations years ago (and over time) on the bird site.
I had someone I follow forward something and then within a day they came back full circle and said they were mistaken and alerted their followers to the fact it was misinformation and deleted the content. It was refreshing and honest. I really appreciated it.
Was it the fake Elon “Mush” post about CEOs. I saw that in a few places but it disappeared. To be honest, I totally believed that he would write something that asinine.
But please send them a derogatory response first and then block. That gets them angry and will frustrate them more and make it more likely for them to leave.
No, it won't make it more likely for them to leave.
All this does is have a pissing contest in somebody else's mentions, which isn't particularly polite. And if everyone does it, there'll be long streams of nasty comments. Ugh. I really like that the Bluesky ethos says "don't argue, just block".
I’m not talking about getting into a debate with somebody. A quick derogatory comment and then block immediately. That will definitely have more psychological impact on them, then if you just do a stealth block that they don’t even know about. These are hateful people and require different tactics
No good. If you harbour any illusions that you can teach them something, or "psychologically impact" them, do it on THEIR timeline. If several people do as you suggest in other people's TLs, the rest of us have to scroll through a lot more utter dross. This doesn't improve anyone's experience.
Seriously though? As a maggot, why would you come to a place where people are trying to get away from you. We didn’t run to truth social. We were happy to get you. Idiots away from us. What is wrong with your personality that you feel you have to spread hate and division? It’s pathetic and weird.
I like to say something along the lines of there must be something seriously wrong with you to chase after people that are trying to get away with you. You must have terrible interpersonal relationships in real life. You are not welcome here. Go back to the cesspool Then, blocked.
I'm grateful that Bluesky allows me to bring my full arsenal of elaborate curses and ridicule to bear against propaganda-pushing Putin plants, MAGA morons, Nazi numbskulls, and assorted scum-sucking shithead sycophants.
I am hoping that Bsky stays in the middle with both sides being able to give logical arguments. It shouldn't become a left leaning version of truth social but a service to itself.
Right now keeping the combatant trolls is helping.
Also, unlike Elon's hellsite, external links aren't algorithmically deprecated, which is also an issue on threads. Plus, the thumbnails get autodisplayed here, like on old twitter.
There's also not a built in misinformation system.
All the worst people you know on Twitter have BUILT IN EXCEPTIONS on the level of Musk himself. From Trump's 100 accounts to all the neonazis like Libs of TikTok
Plus, A) the algorithm (such as it is) rewards likes and shares, not conflict and attention and B) you can’t pay money to juke the algorithm to give you attention.
Sure, it's like the early days of Apple Computers. They even marketed their products as safe from virus/hackers, when in reality, hackers/viruses weren't targeting Apple/Macs because businesses mostly used Microsoft stuff.
Now, it's different.
The entire syrian people are rising up in unity, its not just a single group. Besides, the HTS seems to have changed but it remains to be seen how they will govern
Why do you care about truth, your employer does not print the truth- the Wash Post is all about whataboutism not the truth. It is why I cancelled my 30 year subscription to the Wash Post in July 2024 and why I will now block you because you are part of the “pervasive culture of misinformation”.
I'm hopeful that #Bluesky 's #news environment will continue to #evolve, once we have #verification, so that we can have well established #Feeds of #proven, #independent, well-sourced #REAL #JOURNALISM.
Any #Journalist or #Publication that spreads #fact must be found and rewarded!
But there are countless memes about Social Security that are factually incorrect. Others claim Congress gets 100% free Healthcare. It never ends. Mis-information is everywhere. Stop the memes.

Now I want to know the silent subtext for your statement. Express your inner belief, let us assess and dissect, which is what true journalism demands

I tells ya, kids today ain’t got no culture:)
You holding a Ministry of Truth?
I hope that continues to be the case.
to make sure we all hear how bad trump is and that biden was the best president ever
while we please ignore the fact that he cared more about 70's era one-sided bipartisanship than he did about fighting fascism
I did share a video I wasn’t 100% sure about earlier but it felt genuine and if I get corrected I won’t double down.
How did these basics start seeming extraordinary?
Glad we’re heading in a more transparent direction.
Those who post are held accountable for their content and users are not throttled in mass to push certain agendas.
If we see B.S. on Bluesky, we can call it out!

Trolls remain low, but does BLUESKY capture and share statistics on that.
On paper or in theory you might be right..... but....
It’s just more subliminal.

imo...the same scenario is at play with bluesky.
Told the poster in the comments. Woke up this morning to reply:
"Deleted thst because it was incorrect. Sort and thanks."
I like it here.
