Prior to 9/11 in america a big scandal happening from 97-99 was when this guy was telling secrets about how magic tricks were done. There was a genuine conversation around whether this was right or wrong.

I remember because I had a high school classmate who was a skilled magician himself (he had performed in Vegas and at the White House, as I recall), so of course we all asked him his opinion and he told us that it was definitely Valentino and that every magician wanted his head. LOL wild times
Lmao he actually was wasn’t he. I forgot that part. I also like how people were like “who could he be” as if they’d know a random magician. And when he turned out to be a random magician people were shocked he was just some random magician. Baffling stuff
Right or wrong, it did lead to the Supreme Court ruling that execution by sawing a box in half does constitute cruel and unusual punishment, and I think we can all agree that is a good thing (with the clarity of hindsight)
A Necromancer brought him back, but he revealed how the Necromancer did it, they both died, and no one remembers when or where it happened. The exchange caused a singularity.
Years ago, I was an assistant for one of the guys who made this snitch magic show and I regularly spit massive lougies in his salad dressing if that gives anyone solace…
Oh man the world was so bad back then like we were getting cancer from everywhere and the cops were brutalizing everyone but the whites refused to believe it’s just that Fox knew how to manage sweeps better
It wasn't just Blaine, Magic had an identity crisis for a while there; everybody seemed obsessed with making it clear that they weren't YOUR DAD'S magician.
But then instead of coming up with their own thing, they decided to dress like rejects from the Matrix, and act EXXXTREME TO THE MAX!
He was just the most successful of the that group. I remember watching a televised magic competition around that time, and an insane number of competitors were trying for that same vibe.
My fav was when, after a bunch of specials, they finally did an unmasking and it turned out to be... just some magician no one knew? Like who did we expect, Steve Buscemi? That one's on us
I remember this. Wasn't the whole thing with exposing the secrets behind magic tricks was to try and encourage magicians to innovate and develop new tricks. A kind of "burn down the thick forest so that it becomes fertilizer for new plants can grow."
That might have been said at somepoint I can’t remember tbh but this was absolutely just meant to get eyeballs with a completely irrelevant conversation around “my god! He’s spilling the beans on magic!” It was awesome. “Magical illusions shown to be not real” incredible
My neighbor growing up was a magician. He would try out new parts of his act on my sister and me all the time. He didn't lose any work because of this show. Maybe it had an effect on like big national/world class magicians but the middle class magicians were fine.
Just a simpler time in the american media landscape. I don’t think “is it right or wrong that the magician is revealing magic secrets” would have been a national conversation after that
Oh you'd be surprised. The public may be more politically conscient, but that doesn't mean they're not going to stop worrying about random entertainment drama. Hello Deep v. Heard
It’s fascinating to know that as this was on, child pageantry was a thing in America and while fox has done away with revealing magic tricks, child pageantry remains and that’s just very bizarre
It wasn't just right, it was long overdue! The tricks revealed were almost all old staples that had gone stale.
Also, I finally got my grandparents to stop it with their "Magic shows are using REAL! MAGIC! Because of SATAN WORSHIP!!!" paranoia.
Also it revealed that the real practitioners in a TON of magic tricks were the assistants, & that the Magician himself mainly serves as a focal point who keeps the audience from watching them work. Exploiting gendered stereotypes to get an audience to ignore the trick being done in front of them 🤯🤯!
Almost all (if not truly 100%) of the tricks were decades old, sometimes literally dating back to the turn of the century. Also almost every trick ended up being "the guy stands around and does nothing while the women do all the work"

@mellyinchains.bsky.social when's he gonna be in the roster?
Changes the game.
That’s self-harm and he needed help.

like just close your eyes n- etc.

Good old days?
I do not known anything about this...
your comments clarified things.
Thank you 🎶
