I mean maybe some of these people chose bad projects and maybe they didn't really have much appeal/skill and she wasn't able to launch a career beyond her initial celebrity boost. I can't say that any of them really leap out at me as great actors/actresses.
This is true. I guess I was just emphasizing it takes talent and opportunity to take advantage as it were. Pedro pulled it off the best, yes. Peter Dinklage leveraged it for better roles and more input. Gwendoline Christie landed some parts nobody would have known she existed for otherwise.
"Cast member" is kind of nebulous, no? Like, Sean Bean was a cast member. Natalie Dormer was a cast member. (Unless there's a term of art I'm missing.)
Dinklage has George Costanza-syndrome where his performance is universally acknowledged as one of the best ever on television and has thus unfortunately made him uncastable as a result because now you see him in anything and you're like "hey its Tyrion Lannister" https://bsky.app/profile/doubtingapostle.bsky.social/post/3logr36wlps2m

Have you ever had a dream with a dwarf in it? Do you know anyone who's had a dream with a dwarf in it? No! I don't even have dreams with dwarves in them. The only place I've seen dwarves in dreams is in stupid movies like this! "Oh make it weird, put a dwarf in it!".

Ditto Richard Madden signing on to Marvel right as society collectively decided it was sick of Marvel movies (and that movie wasn’t good but that was true of a lot of prior Marvel movies)
I got to see him at the Globe Theater as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. This was 2015 and he was already immediately recognizable to a college aged idiot like myself
Hated him as a Bond Villain because he did what felt like thousands of Lexus commercials before that and all I could see was this fucking car salesman in a black turtleneck. I know he's had a long career, but those commercials were on every time I turned on the tv back then.
My only mild disagreement is that he's been in quite a few things since, just not yet quite as prominently main or as big a culture moment as GoT. That Hunger Games prequel, X-Men Days of Future Past, Wicked (voice), brief appearance in Infinity War... but not much rising to his level of skill.
We need more roles for badass dudes with dwarfism. Cast him in any of those dramas where he's running a family/business empire, and you've got another show that everyone will be watching. IDGAF if that's "typecasting." Call the character Tyrion for all I care -- just make it happen.
In fact I'm there for a series of series. "Tyrion the record-label mobster," followed by "Tyrion the Columbian drug lord," and then "Tyrion the preacher leading a sex cult in the Louisiana bayou." Give me "Tyrion the motherfucking lunch lady from hell." I'll watch it all and never miss an episode.
One of the greatest acting careers ever. 10/10 credits. From Do The Right Thing, Homicide Life on the Street, Usual Suspects, to an episode of Drunk History and kidnapping baby Yoda.
I also feel like Dinklage had a bit of a Daniel Radcliffe "I'm going to do fun projects that *I* want to do" response to his success, with things like the stage production of Cyrano, and films like The Thicket and American Dreamer, while still also getting paid for small cameos in bigger stuff.
Yes and yes. The Station Agent and his performance in it won a lot of respect, but now he’s someone you put into a Hunger Games movie and an X-Men movie and an Avengers movie and Wicked and a Transformers movie (sometimes voice, sometimes not) bc you know audiences will be happy to see/ hear him.
Well this is an unfortunate factor of Hollywood being what it is, but I would venture to say that there are more impediments to Peter Dinklage being cast than being known for this role. Either they are casting against the type described in script or they are creating a script specifically for him.
I’m sure he is by far the #1 call for any role specifically described as a person with dwarfism, but there aren’t 1000 scripts like that floating around just waiting to be made. He’s also made enough $ that he can afford to reject anything stereotypical or offensive, so that narrows it down more.
It's funny because in season 2 we get introduced to Abby, played by Kaitlin Dever and I'm sorry but Kaitlin would be a better Ellie than Bella ever could. I just don't Bella very compelling as an actor. They don't quite have the charisma of Kaitlin nor Pedro of course.
It definitely made him big but Dinklage was one of the more well known actors in the cast when the show started. The Station Agent wasn’t a sensation or anything but it was buzzy and it was all Dinklage. And he was a “that guy” actor from sitcoms and things.
But Momoa had a fairly high profile too: he was already widely seen as a potential star in search of a hit role back when his casting in the Conan remake was announced.
John Bradley (Sam Tarly) had Moonfall and was in the first season of Three Body Problem. I guess it's not "big" but Conleth Hill (Varys) has done some really good stuff (mostly on british tv)
Conleth's in that vein of Headey and Bean where they had careers pre-GoT but people should check out Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders if they haven't, he's delightful in those.
This isn't entirely right imo. A lot of them got a chance to bite the apple after GoT, Kit Harrington, Sophia Turner, and Richard Madden just, at best, made terrible post GoT choices. Fox X-men basically killed Sophie's career. Heh.
Kit Harrington spending a lot of his stardom in order to make a passion project about his Catholic ancestor who was persecuted by Protestants in 17th century England was at least a very funny way to kill his career
Dinklage also may have had work pre GoT but the quality of his opportunities drastically improved after. Gwendoline Christie has also gotten a few follow ups she likely would not have if not for Brienne.
Emilia Clarke absolutely ascended to stardom. I just think my ambivalence towards her work keeps me from ranking her higher. But she's gone on to star in Marvel movies, Star Wars movies, and even Terminator.

He gets to say that immortal line: “What’s in your wallet?”
Pretty big deal.

but he was a stand out guest star in 30Rock god dammit!
He also got a number of high drama rolls with a wide mix of reviews.
Idk if I'd call him typecast when he's landing spots well outside what Hollywood loves to typecast as.
Gotta watch the video to fully see it but they put so little effort into making this look real.
And that ending...
i think dude is just enjoying himself tbh
just popped up in the most recent captain america, but it seemed like his part of the story really suffered from the rewrites
then again outside Millie Bobbie Brown did any of the Stranger Things kids break out?
Might the Q bounce from a big streamer be less than a big TV show or blockbuster?
Biggest winner from that show is probably David Harbour.
And Hellboy tho that didn't really do anything
but not sure any of this counteracts the idea that PP is the only one to find major stardom from a pretty huge cultural phenomena
but could be ST costars>GoT on some lvl
Meanwhile, nobody seems to know what to do with Kit Harrington or Richard Madden or Emilia Clarke or...
it definitely opens up a lot of (at least in some circles) lateral moves that might be preferable
It will be interesting to see if the Succession kids can make the jump to plentiful big screen projects
