I though data collected by a public agency, with public money was legally the public's data, subject to FoI. Obviously, having to take legal action is a big obstacle to access, not diminishing that, but it can't be withheld.

FWIW, the 2023 data—the first ever nationally representative sample of US transgender high school students—showed that 92% of trans teens reported being verbally abused by their parents and 54% reported being physically abused: “hit, beat, kicked or physically hurt in any way.”

When I was a grad student I successfully sued CMS under FOIA for some Medicaid data they started suppressing and distributed it widely. Might behoove child rights orgs to start FOIA requests for these data in preparation for litigation.

When I was program director for the MA Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth in the late 90s we used stats from our state’s (older) Youth Risk Behavior Survey to support grant applications for vital services for LGBT youth, including suicide prevention. This is straight up malpractice.
