Cars are getting 1cm wider every two years. That may not sound much, but over time it adds up, and they're showing no signs of slowing down π¬
That's #carspreading. Our new campaign is calling on city leaders to make parking policies fairer by varying costs based on the size of a car.

Living rurally, where the excuse for larger cars feels legitimate, people still miss the point that our lanes simply arenβt designed to handle the oversized traffic.
I'm all in favour of extra taxes for these 'inadequacy rectifiers', they take up more space on the road, so they should pay more.
I liked my old car. It must have been the one they measured parking slots by.
- causing more crowding and traffic congestion π¦
- putting more lives at risk, especially children βπΈ
- polluting our air and damaging our planet ππ¨
- sold as a luxury over actual practicality π

Worryingly, sales of larger models of SUVs have been increasing year on year π¬
But what do UK car owners make of all this?
π§΅3/8
Our YouGov polling found that almost 3x as many UK car owners (60%) agree that SUVs βare bought more as status symbols than for practical useβ compared to those that disagree (21%)

Our YouGov polling found that 4x many UK car owners agree (71%) that more SUVs βwill make parking more difficultβ compared to those that disagree (15%)

A majority of UK car owners (59%) also agree that SUVs are not necessary in towns and cities, compared to just 20% that disagree.
This is despite research showing that three quarters of SUVs sold in UK are registered to people living in towns and cities π

French and german cities have progressive parking policies... will UK follow suit? π

1. Safety legislation eg: side impact protection in doors
2. In the UK, more than 50% of adult men and women are overweight, in the US it's more than 80%
Gave a lift to a relative with class 3 obesity - they complained my car didn't have much room
Too many bloated SUVβs often driven by unempathetic individuals.
Comes down to a choice. Something needs to be done to address the explosion of SUVβs on the roads and the problems they impose on others.
But yes, in general, cars are getting ridiculous. My Aunt's Aygo from 2007 looks even smaller today than it did then.
I do think that we should be taxing vehicles by weight and power.

'not within the marked space'
& so should be ticketed,
or better still towed
That would help
The size of car thing frustrates me. Owners seem keen on their right to choose, but many take no resp. for the cumulative effects
I like to point out that our street is likely to need to give up 50% of parking. Passing space between cars on both sides is getting narrower
