I was told about these, "King Cakes" way back at the end of college, but never got to find out, other than being told, what these are.
From the description I thought they would taste nasty as F, so decided I never wanted to get near 1.
That & finding a half crunched "Baby Jesus" in your mouth, 😒 !
I've never had king cake either, but I hear nothing but praise.
Why does it look like a child's drawing of a cake, though?
Maybe not even a cake. It's like a child's drawing of a large donut we're planning to serve to aliens that can see far into the UV part of the light spectrum.
Oh man! You are in for a treat. I hope you are in La and can go all in and taste the different varieties, different bakeries takes on them. The traditional sweet, and also the savory- crawfish or boudin stuffed. Enjoy the new food discovery!
Omg same I just had a slice of prince cake at a bakery in SF and it was so good!!! I'm not actually sure if both are the same but I'm sure king cake is also rly good!
Weeeeelllll, not if your slice has the fava bean (not only you can’t eat it but by “Portuguese law” 😝 you have to buy the next cake!). Otherwise, yuuuuummm.
I have to be honest. There is ok Kingcake and then there is the Kingcake you stand in line 2 hours to get. Well I never have but I know people…
It has to have some yummy filling to make it off the chart!
Manny Randazzo’s king cakes are so good. They only do king cakes, and are only open during the Mardi Gras season every year. You have get in line before they open at 7 a.m. and wait at least an hour. 😅
There's a place in Columbus that makes them, old school bakery...u walk in get a number, don't take ur time cause they will move past u. Omg. That is all I need to say.
A King Cake so sweet and divine,
With colors that brightly entwine.
Filled with cinnamon swirl,
And a small plastic pearl,
Its flavor is simply sublime!
It is similar to a cinnamon roll but in cake form with a lot of sugar on top of the frosting. It is only available during the Mardi Gras/Carnival season, & very popular on the Gulf Coast. They used to put a baby in the cake & if you got the baby you provided the cake the following year.
Yummy! So you probably just had the cream cheese filling, but no fruit filling? I personally like the strawberry filling- but I will NEVER turn down a slice of King Cake!
I'm a terrible native New Orleanian because I don't eat king cake, but it sure is pretty, and I love the excitement when the season starts. Happy Carnival!
I lived in NOLA for four years. You're just beginning your journey of discovery. The quality can really range widely, from mediocre cinnamon roll to the best custard-filled treasure you've ever tasted. Enjoy.
I ate a whole one by myself with the filling! People argue about randazzo’s or Haydels being better! Did u have one with the cream cheese and fruit fillings?
What is this King Cake that you speak of?! Explain it to me as if I live in Vermont where nothing cool exists except maple syrup and Ben and Jerry’s. (Ps: I do live in VT)
It’s a very donutlike cake, with lots of frosting and filling. And there’s a tiny plastic baby in it. If you get the baby, it’s good luck for the new year! (But depending on your group traditions you may also have to buy the king cake next year.)
LOL At my last job, one woman proudly brought one in for us every year. I didn’t like them at all. To be nice, I always took a piece, the smallest I could get away with. And I got that dang baby every time.
I am praying the Salty brings back it's king cake donuts, but if not, I am going to get a pistachio brioche donut and sprinkle dried ube on it. Pistachio is sort of green and gold combined.... (Yes I am torturing you. 😉)

The plain one is fantastic, but the one with apple is divine.
Try your first piece as is, then add a scoop premium vanilla ice cream.
I bake one a week from Epiphany to Mardi Gras Day.
Haven’t had the best until you’ve had this one

I’m from Nola but live in Europe, so I make several king cakes throughout carnival season.
I'm going to order from one of your recommended places.
NOLA plus Sicilian. 👩🏻🍳 😂 🤷🏻♀️
I ordered one from New Orleans one year. It was yummy.
They aren’t hard to make. Give it a go!
So did you get the baby?????
(In more ways than one!)
