I’m totally safe. I’m just a white Christian guy from the Midwest that believes in 1st Amendment religious freedoms for all, free speech, Constitutional separation of powers, due process… and… uh… oh dear…
First they came for a bunch of other groups Niemoller didn’t like, and he didn’t say anything because up until they came for the clergy he was pro Nazi.
Some guy in The Dells, WI lost his wife to ICE. She’s now in a detention center in Louisiana. He voted for 45 because he was going to ‘lock up the criminals’. He ‘didn’t think that meant her’. She overstayed her VISA but had since applied for a green card. I feel sick for her. Him, well…
It's a very fair and just world and I'm a good person doing good things like I'm told and avoiding bad things that will make them come for me. They won't come for me.
The poem has a correct message, but I'm not sure it really resonates with the intended audience. I don't think people who don't care about people generally understand enlightened self-interest. Only people inclined to do the right thing in the first place tend to understand it.
Legal? It's cute that you still believe in the rule of law.
No one is truly safe. We white, native-born US citizens are not in the first wave of persecution, but unless you are always in lockstep with the dictator, you will be in jeopardy.
That’s the point of the poem—he didn’t say anything when the leopards were eating others’ faces, and by the time they came for him, no one was left to say anything
I sort hate the popularity of that poem, cause I'd really prefer if people cared about what happens to others, *without* requiring the prompt of fear for themselves.
They are coming for me! I’m old! I live on SS $973. a mo, the least possible. They refused my husband his SS pension so we’ll fight until I die (I’m on end of life morphine) we get 384. In SNAP and I get Meals on Wheels. Thank you #trump&fiends
Lmao. I was only half joking. Amongst all my multiethnic family I'm not the darkest, but definitely not the lightest either. I've got Mexican primos who are blonde and green-eyed. Al Norteño!
another problem with that goddamn poem: Martin "Niemöller was a national conservative and initially a supporter of Adolf Hitler and a self-identified antisemite."
Isn’t that kind of the entire point of the poem? The poem isn’t meant for those of us woke folks who already care about other people and their struggles. It’s meant for the individualist who tend to support nationalist/populist ideals right up until it’s hit them personally.
Anyone who assumes "they" would ever come for "me" direly underestimates the depths of my obsequiousness. Especially when I have a plethora of underlings I can throw at a tyrant to satiate them before the tyrant gets to me.

Then they came for the land down under
Let it sink in! Then get *mad*
The parallels are unnerving.
What? Try and do something about this? No don't be silly, gotta be just waiting and seeing.
Unfortunately, many people lack the empathy/humanity/intellect to understand.
No one is truly safe. We white, native-born US citizens are not in the first wave of persecution, but unless you are always in lockstep with the dictator, you will be in jeopardy.
"no one would ever come for *me*"
We are on our own but we aren’t alone.
they took a really long time to get to the protagonist
so in general you should lay low and not worry

You should read it, it might make more sense.
Hmmm...
New plan to save America, import and release hippos.
We all know there are people they would never come for.
Oh wow he’s right
