I moderated a small gaming community for years (during gamergate's peak, to reveal how old I am 💀) and learned this lesson the hard way. You have to be a hardass about it or they will walk all over you and pull the community apart at the seams.

terrible people will break any social contract that they can, and granting them the assumption that they're arguing in good faith after they've provably lied hundred of times is self-defeating. Moderating social media sufficiently may not be inherently profitable. Bluesky will be interesting

Giving human moderators the ability to enforce the spirit of the rules is so important. Bad actors will waste so much of your time otherwise, especially since rules lawyering jerks tend to make multiple accounts. So you'll just need to ban them all over again.
