this is a genuinely alarming story via Gabriel Pogrund in Sunday Times:
deepfake video seen by two million people online falsely made it look as if a teacher - delivering election leaflets - had made a racist tirade

The consequences of such malicious actions are far-reaching.
Fucking hell, what a future for our children.
Hell, because of what deepfakes were mostly used for before this latest hype cycle of generative AI, most of the really good software for it is open source and runs locally.
I feel like a hapless politician: "something must be done"!
Also, lots of companies want to keep whatever software they have secret for business reasons.
Most "simple" solutions have already been tried/defeated. :/
For those without a Times subscription.
Thank you.

Would you like the 'too long didn't read' summary or would you like me to post the full text of the article to you?
A lot of AI *is* genuinely world changing. Look who won the chemistry Nobel this year (from a venture based in the UK).
Consumer facing generative AI, on the other hand, is largely unethical, environmentally costly shite.
LOL.
