before you leave facebook, spend a day or two going on every ad that pops up and tell fb to block all ads from that company because it is irrelevant. now, more ads will pop up -- but imagine if thousands block all ads on every one that pops up ... just one way to tell mz to go f himself
Alternately, unfriend everyone, remove the app from your phone, lock down your account and upload hundreds of gigs of video to take up space on their servers and regularly request archives of your account.
if you’re somewhat computer-savvy, ffmpeg can generate random video and audio data. it should have the added side effect that it would be hard for meta’s servers to compress because all of the pixels change every frame
I've used that to make test video for streamers before (though it never got used) because if you can stream randomass noise your internet can handle anything else fine. And it tends to stress the CPU as a minor second test.
debating between deleting them or simply "retiring" fb + ig by not giving them anymore traffic
the one that'd be hardest to actually delete would be whatsapp - lotta folks outside the states use it, so immigrant solidarity/rapid response groups kinda rely on it, sadly
There's a much faster way - repeatedly post a close up picture of an anus as a comment on Zuckerberg's latest post and tag him in it. Also, encourage others to do the same. Your account will be shut down in much fewer steps than this, and you might start a trend.
You tell people to delete X, FB, instagram, Threads and maybe LinkedIn yet. Just because these companies are doing the right thing by not cowardly bowing to DEI.
Probably should have mentioned the hate speech and transphobia tbh. What you said is 100% correct ofc ... but it's also probably what all the nazis say when they leave too. 🤷
Also wipe your browser cookies. FB tracks you even off the app. Even after you delete the app it will continue to track you unless you do some serious cookie purging and invest in some solid ad blocking.
Given that I don't trust Meta anymore, I'm not deleting my accounts, I'm just logging off and removing the apps. I am not ceding my usernames on Meta properties so that some bad actor can use them at a later time in ways I would not.
I don’t trust them either, especially with my data. This is why I’m permanently deleting my account. Yes, they will still keep a lot of data, but I want to purge as much as I can.
though linked accounts maybe, like you using facebook to long in on other apps. I just wish people moved aways from instagram already, Vero was better and people never moved there
Last time I tried to use FB "Download your data" flow, it went like:
- click 'request'
- a few hours or days later, get a link
- the download link is actually between 5 and 20 linkS, all to identically-named files, all ~2GB in size
- did one of the DLs fail? good luck figuring out which one, sucker
Please do not delete your Facebook accounts. We are actively trying to build a healthier, more open, and inclusive online digital community that is welcoming of all walks of life. By deleting your account, you are depriving yourself and the world of the opportunity to be a part of something greater.
Ask your boss to grow a spine instead of huffing the farts of a psychopathic old man and his enablers and then maybe some of us will talk. If we really feel like it.
That makes sense, I think RCS is better and has more to it now than WhatsApp which seems boring to me, but here in the UK it's all anyone seems to use, that or iMessage
Apple has (or had) a system which defaults to iMessage instead of SMS if your contsct links to an Apple account.
We discovered to our cost because we have an iPad but Android phones, so all my wife's iPhone-using mates' texts got sent to iMessage and hidden away on our rarely-used iPad.
WhatsApp is huge in Mexico and I think most of Latin America, it's pretty much the default messaging app. Family, neighbors, businesses.. Want to order a pizza? WhatsApp. Delivery can't find your house? Send your location over WhatsApp... 🫤
It is a worldwide app, apart from (seemingly) North America. We have family in four continents so it's useful.
Strangely in Australia Victoria is all about the WhatsApp while Queensland loves FB Messenger. No real idea about the rest of the states. Very odd, though.
I only used facebook (and its lateral Meta Products) years and years ago, and in the near recent past, because the local Trans support group used it as a primary source of contact. So given the choice, I choose never interact with it going forward, for obvious reasons.
Its the only place where I can easily be in touch with not only my extended family but also folks from my youth. Also Canadian meta seems to have not seen this rollout, so thats not *as* bad
Yes but does deleting the accounts delete your activity from meta? I’ve been working on deleting activity specifically but if I just wait to delete the account…?
I’ve downloaded the “all your information” several times from FB. When I open the archive, all I find is a selection of Messenger conversations and some thumbnails. And it’s multiple GB. Where’s my photo gallery? Where are my posts? Is there a video to tell you how to browse it?
I feel trapped into staying on FB as it's the only contact I have with much of my family, and quite a few friends from previous periods in my life. If I remove myself from FB, the. only blood relatives I'd still be in touch with would be my sister and my nieces (i.e. my sister's daughters).
Folks also need a guide on how to slowly exit Facebook and Instagram in a way that lets them invite all their followers to either find them elsewhere or share IRL contact info.
If you have a business- forums, weblistings and paid print and web advertising will do way more for you than those platforms' shitty algorithms. Spend your time on them instead, or here on bsky.
Don't believe you 'can't leave.'
Did it a week ago soon there will only be nothing but hate and misinformation on Meta platforms. My only fear is they will transition here to spread their evil.
This is best, of course. But I wonder if those who just can't cut the thread yet (maybe they advertise their business, maybe they stay in touch with elderly friends) could be convinced to boycott, say, Mondays. All of us need to push back.
Ah, so the "not Authoritarian, but happily gargles the balls of Authoritarians" tier. Not sure why anyone would want to sit there, personally. Sounds like a smelly deal, sitting a few dozen tiers above in "normal human" territory.

120 min / 4gb seems to be the per video size cap.

Had to directly go through the Instagram website instead of the app.
Deleting our social media accounts just be simple and easy.
Purposefully making it nearly impossible should be illegal.

I left Twitter long ago and I will be deleting the first 2, I never used threads
I deleted Threads and Instagram.
I was not really on Facebook.

But that only works so long as the devices you use are referencing your custom DNS server.
My phobe has never pushed ut, though: It's buried inside the Gmail app.
