If this ever got enough votes (I doubt it will) it would lead to degraded services in rural and underserved communities in a fashion similar to private healthcare in the absence of government funded health facilities.
Biden has filled positions and it's my understanding he can now be voted out. In any case he can be removed by the President. Just as 45 fired all and replaced them, Biden can remove DeJoy, and he should.
So.. I am wrong. Sadly, it would take the vote of the board. I wonder why, knowing what we all know, why have they did not vote him out before the election. Seems a bit messed up to me. He should be given the boot.
DeJoy is appointed by a board. President controls the board appointees but not the postmaster general directly. Biden doesn’t have the ability to remove DeJoy, he just tried to stuff the board with as many Dems as possible.
IIRC they can only vote him out at certain points so not only did we have to wait for new butts in seats on the board, but also a “contract renewal” point where they can fire DeJoy.
And that will be accomplished by having dejoy, who is shockingly still in there, destroy what he and Rs haven't already destroyed.
Look for sorting machines all around the country to wind up in dumpsters again.
Wild how Rs can commit federal offenses in plain sight and never suffer consequences
Unfortunately it was not a power he felt he had. This was something that had to have been done by the board. And Biden has been way too much of an institutionalist to blow shit up the way it needed to be
As I always say, we have been playing by marquis de queensbury rules while being nuked for decades.
He wasn't completely inept. He had historic legislative accomplishments. He was left with a government filled with inbeds. And a compromised court.
And yes, believed way too much in a broken system.
Oh absolutely. It's the most Democrat move; to look at a problem, see that it needs fixing, and decide that it's impossible to solve. See also: most of Obama's tweets lamenting the state of things after he left office.
This is not fair to DeJoy, who has since he got hired, turned into a USPS believer - he just believes it has to break even like the law says. USPS went nowhere but deeper into debt under Brennan. Unless Congress acts (and it wasn't for years before that), something breaks eventually without reform.
Hey Jeff, we beat you to the scoop.Got it when DeJoy was appointed. "Looking at" is not actionable. The question is, "What steps have you taken to privatize the USPS and how will rural America, your constituents, get their prescriptions to stay alive?" Helpful to do the research to quote him numbers.
The Media needs to inform America that the US Postal System is the ONLY government Agency that specifically named in the US Constitution. See Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the US Constitution.
At this point, it feels like he's the middle school class president who got himself elected by making outlandish promises to his gullible classmates, like vending machines full of candy and extended lunches.
This is why they have insisted the USPS keep enough cash on hand to fund their retirement plans for 75 years. That's a nice bit of money to "privatize" directly into their pockets.
Better idea....Repeal the republican actions which have burdened the USPS
Ex. the PAEA required the USPS to pre-fund 100% of its retiree health benefit liabilities over 75 years. This one mandate has had many negative consequences.
Look what MAGA idiots did to Joni Ernst about Pete Hegseth, and then tell me any GOP Senator or Rep is gonna stand up to idiotic moves like this. If he wants it, he’ll get it.
He could look. But the Constitution may have something to say about that. Until that is, the corrupt SCOTUS will support whatever illegal things he proposes.
That’s because he has had his buddy in there with the sole intent of privatizing it and Musk now wants digital Xmail as part of his “everything app” rollout.
Bezos will agree with whatever the 2 stooges say. He is in deep now but knows there’s other ways to make millions if not billions off trump and his presidency.
It’s replicable in dense areas. Essentially people living in dense areas subsidize people living in less dense areas since it costs the same to send a letter anywhere. If they decide to change pricing based on cost to serve, the rurals who were most likely to vote for Trump will get hurt the most.
Privatization is a great idea. It requires willing participants ponying up money to get the entity off the government's hands. These folks are in it for future profits. Let's see how they can be assured. Don't count me in.
Every service they've privatized has failed miserably. Service takes a back seat to profits. Prisons are worse than dog pounds. Children services actually allowing more children to die rather than pay OT. Military is a black hole of misused funds. Disgraceful
I know there’s a character limit but maybe say a word or two about whether Trump has sole authority to do this. You and others are really going with his version of a dictatorial presidency.
The Rapist is trying to destroy a pivotal piece of infrastructure that allows small businesses to more easily compete with the #Garbage, #Deplorable #CEOs who are not lapping at The Rapist's shoes. He is attempting to undercut the "free market."
Real Americans want to pay $17.99 to ship their medication and then have to play phone tag with the courier for a week to get it. Woke lefties just don't understand Real America.
A few years ago I sent my sister a birthday present, which was a couple of blouses. Because she lives in a rural area, UPS couldn't guarantee next day and it cost me $32. I could have driven the 100 miles and hand delivered it for way less and much faster. This is what the rural people who voted ..
This is not liberal idea, it is very much a Republican one. In 1974, under Nixon the USPS was required to pay a higher share of retirement accruals than other agencies. In 2006, under George W Bush, the USPS was required to prefund retirement benefits- like no other agency. Both to break the USPS 1/
Numerous Democrats supported the 2006 legislation. it passed the Senate by unanimous consent. Democrats did nothing to roll it back when they had control of Congress and the presidency
In 2022, under Biden Congress rolled back the refunding of retirement benefits by the USPS finally relieving them of this burden. This was by and under Democrats.
For almost 2 decades, USPS had to put money into potential retirement benefits rather than upgrade equipment. Then Trump appointed DeJoy to break what was left. The GOP has been working on destroying the USPS for 50 years, you cannot blame Democrats for that
Are we going to find out what 'last mile delivery service' means to the supply chain? Not as dramatic as 'Big Boat Stuck' but a likely looming shitshow nonetheless.
As if things don't suck enough for artists and creators, the EU/UK GDPR rules and thing with the usps about to become useless.. 🫣
So the first thing they'll do is sell all of USPS's real estate to their cronies at firesale prices, then rent them back to the USPS at "reasonable" rates.
Or you know, tell 300 mil Americans who have been used to 200+ years of postal service that they're just gonna have to pay UPS/FedEx etc to get all their mail.
Including SS checks. At least while they figure out how to shut THAT down.
Well, there won't be any "USPS" to rent them back to. It will be something like DeJoy Parcel Service, who will be able to purchase them for ten cents on the dollar.
And in 2022, the Trump Organization sold the hotel to the parent company of the Waldorf Astoria -s the current tenant of the The Old Post Office Building is now the Waldorf.
BTW, around the back of the hotel is the entrance to the Old Post Office Tower which gives you almost as good a panorama of D.C> as the Washington Monument. It's a fee-free National Park Service site.
👮♀️ I'll be way more surprised if the BOP isn't first in line to privatize... considering the private prison company stocks have risen faster than any other since the election.
Busting the Unions (Project 2025) and firing these federal workers have been on Vivek's chopping block list.
The irony of this, of course, is that it's "Real America" (according to MAGAts) that will be most impacted. Not only will all the little local POs close because they lose money, delivery charges to the sticks will make receiving mail markedly more expensive.
Suckers.
Well, Ma and Pa, it ain’t like you need that fancy government bringing mail to your house. You can fire up the truck and drive an hour to the big county-line mail pile Fed Ex’ll set up for you and spend the day picking out what’s yourn.
With all the advanced compliance a lot of liberal institutions have been doing in the media, and the so far muted response from Dems over his appointments, I'm not confident in the fight in the political/legal arena. Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst.
Maybe there's an entire class of people whose entire job is to explain the legality of things. Like perhaps they could research these things and then 'Report' on it.
This is such irresponsible journalism, like this isn’t an absurd premise on the face of it. With the actual hurdles involved might as well report on me “looking at” becoming King of Australia.
Privatizing the post office worked fine in Britain, Germany, Portugal, and Japan. Ironically, the people who lose from this are mostly Trump voters since they tend to live in rural areas where delivery will cost more.
It seems worth pointing out that virtually everything the USPS delivers is sent by corporations.
Marketing, AKA junk mail, is 53%. First class mail is 40%, but almost all of that is bills, invoices, statements, etc. The rest is packages, mostly mail-order.
It won’t. Privatization works for the owners. Costs go up & service suffers. Public ownership means the mission is to serve the public, not some wealthy dudes.
I would make the case that not everything should be profit-minded. Things like police, fire, and basic communication like mail shouldn't. The argument is that the USPS doesn't make a profit. Does the police department make a profit? Can Fedex or UPS deliver an envelope for the price that USPS can?
220-215 in the chaotic House. Rural Republican folks will get very riled up when they learn their vi*gra won't get mail order delivered for 65 cents any more.
Wasn’t that the purpose of putting DeJoy in charge in the first place?? Destroy it from within..then sell it off? DeJoy was a major Republican donor and fundraiser for Trump and the system made Biden unable to fire him.
Privatizing the USPS will almost surely collapse the entire system upon which so many America rely. There wouldn’t be any way to hold the company accountable for anything THEY decide can’t or shouldn’t be delivered AND they’d hike postage prices so high, it would become unaffordable for most to use.
Oh shit so turns out hiring a businessman to run the country like a business results in people with less money to suffer... You know... Like a business?
Appointed a hitman to dismantle the postal service which Dems did nothing to stop now he’s going to sell it off. But hey I live in a city, my mail service won’t suffer. His voters in the middle of nowhere are fucked though 🤷🏻♂️
Local post offices are one of the bedrock institutions in small rural towns. May be the only "public" gathering places when it's too small to have a town hall or library. People are fiercely protective of them because when they close, the town loses part of its identity.
There will be pushback.
39% of the rural population in the US, or 23 million people, lack access to broadband internet.
14 million households don't have internet at all.
These areas also have no real allocation of funding towards public resources like libraries.
Also, e-commerce sites predominantly rely on usps.
Lacking access to broadband internet is not the same thing as lacking access to the internet. Hell, even a dial-up modem delivers information faster than the post office.
And yes, USPS delivers ecommerce packages (and turns a profit doing so). There's no reason to believe this will stop happening.
private/for profit 'delivery' service
ie UPS - Fed Ex... it will be all about profit & they will collude to drive up prices
Rural areas will get no service or service with extremely high prices
Not rocket science 🤦♀️
Privatization means no services for rural areas—not enough people to make it profitable.
All those MAGA voters going to find out what life is like without mail, schools, hospitals…
This will probably be the only time I ever defend Bezos, but no way he would support this. Amazon has a model where they dump last mile delivery into USPS system for rural packages. This would cost Amazon. They’re currently piggybacking off USPS to turn a profit that likely shouldn’t be possible.
Yep. Amazon contracts out deliveries to USPS. I fail to understand how this helps their “sustainability” initiatives when two different USPS drivers delivered 2 different Amazon package within minutes of each other. 🙄🤷🏻♂️
Donald says lots of things. Him opening his yap, like he does every day, is neither breaking nor news.
Actions he takes will be news. Some already are. But you've gotta let go of this idea that mouth sounds from him have any meaning. They never have, and this has not changed.
39 U.S. Code § 101
The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the Government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution, created by Act of Congress, and supported by the people.
Yes I know
Everyone needs to call Senator Schumer's office right the f**k now.
He's leaving the seats vacant on the board for trump to fill.

Not gonna happen. Rural states of both parties control the Senate. IMHO it all worked better when Postmasters were nominated by Senators, because they made sure to nominate competent people who would keep the mail moving so they wouldn't hear complaints. Now we get NoJoy Dejoy.
I'm sure the "taxation is theft" crowd is all kinds of upset about Trump selling of the infrastructure those taxes built for pennies on the dollar, right?? Right???
That'll be wonderful for all the people who rely on it for their medicines. Wonder how many voted for this guy thinking they'd have a better life with him in charge of their lives. Guessing they won't be wondering long if the post office screws up the meds their lives literally depend on. #fafo

Small business? Large business? Is it a smart thing, a silly thing? Something to worry about? Something to ignore?
this has been in the GOP pipeline for decades, accelerated during 45 and definitely why De Joy was put in charge of the USPS.
Look for sorting machines all around the country to wind up in dumpsters again.

Suuuure, Jan.
Brilliant.
The reason for DeJoy was to destroy from within.
This is old news.
Ex. the PAEA required the USPS to pre-fund 100% of its retiree health benefit liabilities over 75 years. This one mandate has had many negative consequences.
Rural routes will either disappear or pay a significantly higher rate on postage
Article I, Section 8, only Congress has the power to “establish Post Offices and post Roads,”/ mail routes.
The Postal Service Act of 1792 states the postal system was intended to benefit the public good not line the pockets of corporations.
The “last-mile” delivery provided by USPS is not replicable at rates anyone will pay.
...
Ch-ching ch-ching suckers.
But this is a moot point, because mail is a largely dead technology anyway. Wire fraud is where the action is.
republicans have always wanted to privatize everything because they work for the rich, not the American people!

Real Americans want to pay $17.99 to ship their medication and then have to play phone tag with the courier for a week to get it. Woke lefties just don't understand Real America.
Rural America needs to pay attention.
(Also, I'd invite you to run for office as a natural when it comes to politics 😆)
Nobody wants to do small-package delivery to small-town & rural areas.
Turns out that Amazon couriers don't like peeing in bottles to save time while delivering to turnip farmers.

Suckers.
Wait didn't he put the constitution into his "bible"? That means the USPS is literally in the Trump Bible.
Oh my. Good lord.
I'm stuck on what we should call them, though.
Most things are electronic. I mean, I can imagine Hallmark might go out of business. Or coupon advertisers.
Outside of specialty services like certified mail or package, who would even use the post office again?
That’s been Putin’s way
There’s a hint in the name: Postal SERVICE.
Marketing, AKA junk mail, is 53%. First class mail is 40%, but almost all of that is bills, invoices, statements, etc. The rest is packages, mostly mail-order.
In 'natural monopolies', it's much more mixed
Delivery of mail isn't. Universal service requirements can be, but it's complex
Every rural R will be booted out of office of the post man drive by the farm daily.
You’re shit at your job, mate.
It also allows the Congress to issue letters of marque to pirates to raid enemy shipping.
Congress isn't *required* to do either of those things.
🤦♀️
There will be pushback.
The government ought to be run like a government, not a business.
The main effect of shutting down a rural post office is to deny the town its supply of unwanted junk mail. 😎
14 million households don't have internet at all.
