No discipline is immune, not even those in business schools. The attack on The PhD Project is evidence.

A gobsmacking story. Water companies let toxic waste disposers, for cash, dump their loads into sewage farms. The sewage sludge is then spread, untested, on farmland, potentially poisoning vast areas, entire ecosystems and the people (you and me) eating the food. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

My most recent piece for CTEC. It's been a long time coming, and I so appreciate the time and insights of every veteran who participated. www.middlebury.edu/institute/ac...

Oh @columbiauniversity.bsky.social, quo vadis? Still GC of AAUP @veenadubal.bsky.social remains right, the real obstacle is a collective action problem. Higher ed workers of all ranks, let’s get organized for real collective power! apnews.com/article/trum...

Raise the costs of folding & raise the benefits of resisting. At unis: think donors, state $, famous alumni, angry parents, employee labor actions, +/- news coverage, social esteem, admin career prospects, coordinated action that spreads risk, give cover that limits visibility...lots of options.

I'm super excited to share this short brief on who has power over the Department of Education, what the ED Sec can do, and what Executive Orders can do. There's a lot of info (and links!) packed into one place. I hope it's helpful. Please share. drive.google.com/file/d/1QpeK...

I am told Bluesky is an echo chamber.

We need to build a powerful movement in defense of US higher education NOW. Join us. www.aaup.org/membership/d...

Well the debate is over. It is literally pure uncut fascism to threaten to send Americans to foreign gulags if they oppose your union of corporate and government power.

Tonight, hours after the Paul Weiss news broke, an associate at Skadden Arps sent a firm-wide email: "Please consider this email my two week notice, revocable if the firm comes up with a satisfactory response to the current moment...We do not have time. It is now or it is never..."

@columbiauniversity.bsky.social, yes, punitive cuts for fighting back are real & scary. But @veenadubal.bsky.social, GC of AAUP, nails it. The real obstacle is a collective action problem. Higher ed workers of all ranks, let’s get organized for real collective power! apnews.com/article/trum...

Educators, neighbors, everyone. We at Teachers College are doing what we can to stand against Trump's attack on education, not just on our campus but beyond. Please read our statement and share.

NEW: Judge Subramanian orders Columbia not to provide any student names or disciplinary records related to pro-Palestinian campus protests to a GOP-led US House committee while the court considers a temporary restraining order. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

"Mobilize your alumni networks. Enlist families whose children’s lives have been saved in your hospitals; reach out to companies that have commercialized your research, make contact with universities in red and blue states, public and private, who face the same threat. Do it fast." Important read:

Outrageous and shameful

COVID is a mass disabling event. Long COVID is a real problem and has been actively harming high risk people the most. Not masking is a disability rights issue. Disabled people deserve to be in society and by refusing to mask if you're able to is automatically saying we don't belong here.

1. Andrew Cuomo, a frontrunner for NY Mayor, has tapped an ex-employee of "the Coalition to Protect Kids," an anti-trans org, to serve as his treasurer. His campaign would not commit to EITM that it would protect gender affirming care. The latest from S. Baum. Subscribe to support our journalism.

My workplace has become ground zero for American fascism. If we allow Mahmoud’s abduction to go unchallenged, we allow the end of democracy as we know it. New from me for @zeteo.com: zeteo.com/p/i-am-jewis...

Demonstrations for International Long COVID Awareness Day have sparked around the globe. We reached out to international organizers for photos from their actions to document the demonstrations and highlight their demands. bit.ly/4im6qFk

They're coming for the dissidents, the scholars, the lawyers, and the media first, which is what dictators often do. Shut up the loud opposition, shut up the people who know history best, shut up the tools of legal opposition, and shut up those trying to provide transparency.

ABSOLUTELY TRUE! 👇👇👇

This #LongCovidAwarenessDay I’m reflecting on how many people have been let down by governments, public health & medical establishments How Covid has been downplayed, airborne spread ignored & vaxx and relax strategies pushed for the sake of capitalism How many have Long Covid because of this? 🧵

What would Jane (McAlevey) do?

NEW email from Columbia President Katrina Armstrong — "The Principles Guiding Me" —> "I stand by my students, all of my students" Cites need for intellectual freedom, respect for all, and "fair and just processes" …4 days in, Armstrong still hasn't mentioned the Khalil case by name

Some Democratic Senators are worried they will be "blamed" for a shutdown if they refuse to accede to the DOGE CR. But they will bear blame for aiding and abetting a coup if they give in.

“The MAGA movement demands the supplication of the corporate university…But there’s a clear lesson for those who want to emerge from this era intact: Supplication to Trump will not save you.” 🔥🔥🔥

We call for the immediate release of former Columbia University grad student Mahmoud Kahlil, a legal permanent resident of the US. His abduction is an assault not only on basic immigration law but on our 1st Amendment protections of freedom of speech & assembly. www.aaup.org/news/aaup-co...

For the @theguardian.com I wrote about the abduction of Mahmoud Khalil & Trump's exploitation of anti-Palestinian racism to descend the nation into authoritarianism, with the full collaboration of academia. No one is free until Palestine is free. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Right now there is clear, overwhelming opposition to Mahmoud Khalil’s abduction across the moderate, liberal, progressive & left spectrum. This kind of loud unity is what authoritarians are afraid of. To keep it up we need every institution & public leader to join the chorus.

I need y'all to sit with this headline and understand what is being done to our community. They're trying to criminalize our very existence. This is a campaign of eradication. www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/rcna...

On #InternationalWomensDay let's hear it for Carolina (L) & Yolanda (R), hard working farm workers who are harvesting radishes in Moorepark CA. En el Día Internacional de la Mujer, que se oiga para Carolina (izq.) y Yolanda (der.), campesinas que cosechan rábanos en Moorepark, CA. #WeFeedYou

Censored words: Per the NY, "agencies have flagged hundreds of words" to avoid or remove. In some cases, they've "ordered the elimination of other materials (including school curricula) in which they [the terms] might be included." An incomplete list, below: www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Breaking: Columbia University expels all students from campus to see if they can get a few more dollars back. #Satire

Rep. Zooey Zephyr - My Wife - just gave an incredible speech against a drag ban in Montana. It was so strong that a Republican rose to speak passionately against the bill, chastising the sponsor. The drag ban dies in Montana, flips 10+ Republican votes! This is the power of representation.

Between 2010 and 2024, CDC estimates that flu resulted in an estimated 9.3 million to 41 million illnesses, 120,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations and 6,300 to 52,000 deaths annually. That’s *with* widespread use of the flu vaccine. www.cdc.gov/flu-burden/p...

Since the president has signed an EO making English the official language of the United States, here is the first non-English copy of the Declaration of Independence, printed in German just days after July 4, 1776. We have always been multilingual. cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/coll...

My latest for @truthout.org reports on librarians who are running for office and taking power. As Ilana Stonebraker says, we need to imagine ourselves as the deciders.

Prof @illdottore.bsky.social writes, in a letter to the editor: "Regarding the accusation that I consider the exclusion of Jewish students from campus spaces a “rightful form of protest”—I do not hold this position, nor does the author provide any evidence of my doing so. It is mere libel." 🇵🇸 🎓

If you aren’t doing anything, don’t criticize those doing something. If you take issue with “only” a one day action, think about what you can do to sustain it. The Montgomery boycott followed the advice of T.J. Jemison to organize a carpool of 300 cars after the city penalized Black taxi drivers.
