A mom just came in SO EXCITED to find a map store bc her son would LOVE it.
She tries to be coy. "My son is... Really into maps. Real special kid."
I'm like, ma'am, this is a map store. Half my customers are on the spectrum. I have a trains and transit section. You're among friends.

Thanks for letting me know!
I love your story and your posts.
If you aren't already on it, I'd suggest you make a lot more of these vids. Pick a map, tell its story. Share your enthusiasm.
Easily one of our top five dates. 🗺️
Followed you Andrew, and I look forward to more!
Actually, Sorkin had a few good map plot points in that series.
I could see your map store becoming the Scarecrow Video of Cartography.

After I culled my email history to find the address, I was kinda excited to see they have a sale going on.
As they told us about you getting the store while it was happening, I agree that it's a great story!

Got a local craft beer brewery where you can run a quarterly map nerd group/prez and maybe sell some cool stuff?

My people… hello.
To quote her "a map store sounds sick!"

curse your sensitivity, sir, I will not be mocked by your thoughtful understanding
He's memorised all the flags of the world (yes all of them) and does games where he clicks to find countries (and US States) but with no borders.
Has he discovered the Map Men on YouTube? They crack me up, proper British humour.
Love maps and I have some spectrum traits

(I've narrowed it down to something waterfall-related in some Algonquian dialect, but haven't arrived a a consensus in under 3 minutes)
One of the twins drew a map from memory and it was so good, he was accused of cheating. He dropped out of school.
Francis and Freelan also reinvented film, the assembly line to make said film, and a steam powered car.

One time I wondered how many chairs were in a restaurant.
"96. And there are 15 tables."
WHAT?
Love her casual expertise on the chair count 🖤
"I immediately count everything when I walk into a room."
I had no idea. Said it started when she counted the steps to school when she was 9: 1025.
I mentioned a movie and she told me more details about it than I remembered from seeing it two weeks before. She had seen it 71 years before.
She had a very strong relationship with the truth. something I learned from her every single day I was with her: 22 yrs.
Imagining how much mental energy she must’ve burned in daily life if she was counting every object in every space. For 103 years! And what the filing system in her head might’ve been like.
So interesting to get a glimpse of how different people are, while seeming so similar on the exterior.
Every time she told a story about the ship there was a new detail. She was seeing it all again, not just remembering the memory.
I sure miss her.
They are, ehem, brilliant.
The archive dates back to the mid 1800s.
I guess undiagnosed...
My point is... modern medicine, including...
That's why I always find social media accounts devoted to people on the spectrum so bittersweet and confusing: they do allow me to feel like I'm finally part of a group in a way I probably never could...
It sucks, to be honest, and I hope it changes someday soon.
Uh yeah… I work at a major research university

My dad was a surveyor and USGS map dealer. He bought the business from his uncle. I worked for my dad as a surveyor and draftsman. My daughter grew up with maps & is now a GIS professional and the 4th generation of map makers in our family 🗺️
You should talk to my friend @ominousrabbit.com
Got very into S Augustus Mitchell, my fav I have is the big 1843 National Map of the American Republic. Such cool info on that one.

Sadly, the building was torn down and a condo put in. I miss it.
If I am ever in RI I am so visiting.
Train and transit maps 😍
Shop owner who gets it 🥹
Next time I'm anywhere near RI I will have to add in some time to visit!
In other words: practice makes you a better navigator, not sex.
I didn't shop much on that side of town, but it was on a direct line between our house and my grandparents', so I'm pretty sure I talked my parents into a stop at least once. :)
I love the mixture of the familiar (the A1198 from Caxton to Godmachester) and the unfamiliar (where's the A14?).
Also: Cambs born n bred, but never heard of Flendish or Wetherley Hundreds!
(Remember prices are in AU$, so your US$ price will be about two-thirds of what's listed. But you'll have international shipping on top.)
(Did you see what I did there..?)
