Wild to me that the dominant reaction on here seems to be that this is bad journalism because it treats a Trump voter as a human. I'm not a strategist but if you belong to a party that wants to win elections, shouldn't you regard folks like this as part of your next coalition instead of the enemy?

People’s reactions to these stories tend to be of the leopards-eating-faces variety but this is a great piece of reporting in part about how voters very disconnected from politics make their choices.

Didn't double down, and critically, voted for someone else every time since
She has other reasons she won't admit, like racism and transphobia probably
I am
And yes, those who voted for a white-nationalist authoritarian to get cheaper groceries aligned themselves with rank, overt evil
Until those who support evil acknowledge the harm they've done, they're still aligned with it
Covid taught me that people only care when someone they love is dying
Luckily, it looks like Bobby Brainworm will get us there sooner rather than later

but this goes entirely unexamined!
They are evil and/or idiots.
It takes a certain type of writer to imagine he is talented enough to manipulate emotions while we watch the U.S. implode.
The first time, OK ‘em dumb fucks didn’t know…But THIS TIME AROUND…they knew what he’d do… they just didn’t think it’d affect them!
I'm sorry these plaintive missives from Real America don't have the effect you think they should, but *we* have had enough too.
a decade of being told fuck your feelings, you’re not a real American, you’re a demonrat you’re human scum, vermin
She empowered these people to target me and my family. She can go fuck herself and I hope she never gets her baby
Anyone now who says they didn't know what they were voting for is either lying or inexcusably stupid.
The world really doesn't need a new Hot-Stove-Burn-Victim story every week for the next four years! We get it! 🙄
Not "I was naive when I chose to believe what I wanted to hear and chose to ignore the parts I didn't like"
Just like they accuse us of being to the MAGAs who've been doing the real harm these last 10-20 years.
(I consider the Tea Party movement the beginning of MAGA)
They're highly educated, trained, experienced career professionals. They know *exactly* what they're doing.
Eventually, nobody feels sympathy for a conman's marks.
We aren't going to get a decisive majority to take back the country from these nuts with 51% of the population behind us - we need 60, 70, maybe even 80%.
I get what you're saying, but no one ever pleads with the monsters to be decent or even just to grow the hell up.
The rest we'll deal with at the end of all of this during their trials.
Drumpf voters are our future allies in victory.
The question is not do we leave space for the 'buyers with remorse.'
It is instead, who is being evicted to open up that space?
Giving both sides equal treatment in the current climate is maximum clownishness, and any thinking person oughta know better.
And to the gal in the article, sorry reading is hard.
Never any introspection from journalists about their own failures.
The same expectation is not made of Trump voters learning about
And for the record, I've lived my life in rural, red American, including 21 years in an Ohio county that just went over 70% for Trump, so it's not like Trump voters are mysterious to me.
What about this hypothetical person
But my age doesn’t allow me to put it off.
And my healthcare (CHAMP VA and secondary Medicaid the VA makes you get) is being gutted.
This timeline fucking sucks.
I want MAGA to die. Painfully.

Always loved everything Baphomet represents. If imma worship a made up deity, I'm riding with he/her 😁💙
The one thing she cared about (that specifically benefits her) wasn't delivered and she feels cheated.
She's not part of any coalition.
Do reporters who are writing profiles such as that one ever “dig into social media profiles” to look for “signs” like this?
https://bsky.app/profile/foreverambre.bsky.social/post/3lj6h6veadk2u
You mistake social pressure for some sort of campaign strategy.
When they start publicly pressuring the politicians they voted for to rescind the destructive policies that they voted for, then I can stop stressing out about surviving and find the energy to profess some empathy.
Good luck with that.
Pretty blonde lady sad, man defend, man feel good!
Hundreds of pregnant women around the world WILL die preventable deaths this year bc of USAID cuts. God forbid men act like heroes for those who need one instead of the white lady frowning in the picture.
Add in the anger, sense of betrayal, exhaustion, and fatigue caused by the moment. Voila
I'm not that sympathetic to the person in the story, but read a little closer please
I was reconstructing why that sentence is in the article.
On it's face it seems anti-Trump, like it's trying to convince other Trump voters that they made a grave mistake - but it's the Washington Post, so that's a bit confusing.
Like, yeah, no. Not happening. Courage is a thing, find some. Your vote is secret, for fucks sake.

You can be a good person or a coward, not both.
Trump voters only care about something if it affects THEM PERSONALLY, so having a story like this out there makes other people aware of what's happening if it's not happening to THEM.
Which, like abortion, it likely isnt.
And no, comments expressing frustration with these people have literally no bearing on how they voted or will vote. They have agency, stop treating them like precious babies
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/us/black-voters-trump.html
that's different from staying the story shouldn't be written, or should have been written in a way that demonized rather than humanized her.
These stories try so hard to humanize Trump voters they wind up infantilizing them.
She doesn’t value women, LGBTQIA+, right to body autonomy just to name a few.
This lady had some serious suspension of disbelief to think he would fund free IVF
Though we all really want to since they have royally fuqqed us all and the world…but uninformed within a sea of misinformation, yes!

Do I wish things were different? Yep. Do I have pity? Nope.
Probably didn’t dawn on you to explore how this human’s mental short circuiting became so fouled up. Guess you went straight for the riveting storytelling, etc
So...exactly what Harris did?
There's a word for doing something over and over again and pretending you'll get a different result.
"In Springfield, they are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there."
I must have missed that part. But hell it worked.
I'm not a Democratic Party strategists, though, so you will not see an ounce of sympathy from me for her plight.
They do not understand why this looks bad.
I still don't understand how a functional adult can listen to Trump speak for more than 30 seconds without figuring out that he's just a shameless world-class bullshitter. How do you win over morons? Better bullshit?
She was able to vote for a White man (Biden) but not a Black-Indian woman. So she may vote for Dems again, just not some Dems.
“More than 62% in Lake County, which includes the town, voted for [Trump] in November and in 2020.”

This is literally my favorite genre of media rn.
Where are the articles now on the non-Trump voters suffering?
This isn't about one bloody article.
Give folks with buyers’ remorse a new and welcoming home, with a better set of values.
And yes, you're absolutely right, she's certainly a vote the Democrats can and should want to win back.
Telling her she's the enemy isn't going to achieve that.
She was lied to and believed the lies.
Which one of us hasn't ever done that?
Who is served by this pencil-sketch of a profile, with so much negative space? I don't think Dems are.
There has been more than enough warning out there of exactly who Trump is, exactly what he intended to do if elected.
She *chose* to throw every one of us under the bus in the vain hope that she might gain something for herself.
Why would I trust that she won't do that again?
There goes your coalition partner.
What's your plan for that.
If Rs tell her what she wants she believes it.
What's the plan on that.
Check back with this woman in the midterms and I'd put good money on her having reconciled on Trump because of "her faith" and the new hot button social wedge issue (TBD) that she just can't put up with anymore.
"Ignorance of the law is no excuse..." and all of that . .
I wish I could focus on being retired, and not having to worry about Americans having become so fucking moronic that they allow the fucking antichrist to take over the country TWICE
But I won't pretend that the woman was justified in her voting choice. And we can't function as a country with an electorate this...gullible and inattentive.
How about holding adults fucking accountable for their choices??? and if they want to make amends a reminder that there is no forgiveness without penance
Could you please stop calling my neighbors stupid?
https://bsky.app/profile/wearelegion2025.bsky.social/post/3lj63pjr4vc2c
Your premise hinges on whether we have more influence over her than she does herself.
Maybe therapy would help her. Seriously. But not at the ballot box, at the expense of the rest of us who *did* pay attention, and had the nerve to care about our neighbors.
The house is on fire and you want us to go check the chlorine levels in the pool.
I'm fine blaming her, and if her suffering is only 1/10 of what will be inflicted on those with less privilege, she should count herself lucky.
It's up to her to leave the Nazi movement.
You are framing it as if there is no reality outside how we are "seeing" her.

* Lots of Trump voters didn’t want this, they are reachable, we need to reach out to them with patience and understanding
* These fucking fucks did this to us and to themselves, fuck these fucking fucks right in their stupid fucking faces 🤔
sorry 😢🤷
It's not far from "She chose a side. Now she suffers the consequences." That's FAFO beatdown bandwagon bait.
If you trust someone will move their car out of a handicapped spot when asked and they don't and you ask them to move the next day and you don't and then you are fed up and have their car towed and they melt the fuck down, do you give a fuck about how they feel now?
If she gave a shit about anyone other than herself and her narrow viewpoint maybe I'd feel bad about that but because she felt like she should get stuff for free and decided to vote that way on ONE issue, I genuinely don't need her input on this one.
Fuck no
But I need her to be the kind of person who doesn't take a handicap parking space because she wants to save 5m and also one who, when she gets towed, doesn't melt down when she has to pay a $500 fine she can't afford due to her own decisions.
🙏🏼
@emilydavies.bsky.social
This story and also this woman are trying for collective sympathy, and that is fabulously selfish.
Does she have a few good Dem friends she can talk to?
Bu asking us all to support and provide sympathy? That's wrong. And you should know that.
And guess what? Bezos' paper probably did know that.
You wanna play chess? Play better.
Promises not kept. TFG has never kept a promise nor told the truth. Still find it incredible that folks voted for him.
This is good journalism, though.
All the people she threw under the bus had hopes and dreams as well, but she chose to vote for a fascist.
The solution is not "more info", it's "feed them whatever bullshit will get their vote", which Republicans apparently understand and Democrats don't.
https://bsky.app/profile/snarkyrobot.bsky.social/post/3lj64cip6qs2l
Fuck her and the rest of them.
In 3.5 years, people like this will walk into the voting booth thinking, “I know the face-eating leopard ate my face *last time*. However, he promised me a new shiny object if I vote for him. Maybe he won’t eat my face *this time*.”
1) reducing economic inequality is a left issue.
2) just as reducing racism & discrimination does not eliminate economic inequality, reducing economic inequality does not eliminate discrimination.
It’s not one or the other. It’s both.
In psychology, it’s called ‘Last Place Aversion.’
No, the dems didn’t and don’t need her to win, the democrats needed all the people who sat home rather than showing up
But Trump's trick is that he accepts anybody who accepts him, even as he cons them, Dems should embrace all voters, but not let it decide policy
If you're suffering because of the guy YOU voted in, the word for that is justice
But she accepted the sexual assault and misogyny for a shred of hope that she’d personally benefit via IVF. And dragged the rest of us with her.
It’s very hard to feel sorry for her.
The US has historically coddled people who knowingly voted against their own interests, because those voters didn’t think policy would apply to them.
It’s called privilege.
She knew his policy, disagreed with him, and STILL voted for him bc she wanted free IVF.
Personally I think damn near everyone has tried to have those convos about how R policy will affect them, they've agreed, then come election time they turn into the goofy 'I'll do it again' meme.
The idea that trans people (for example) should be expected to say “I know you voted for a guy that wants me dead, but welcome to the party” is nuts.
The idea that we have to forgive those people without any work from them to actually repent for what they did is, at the least, really weird to me
I'm pretty sure the Harris Campaign proved this to be untrue.
A woman with limited resources chose to overlook a lot to prioritize her #1 issue. She’s in a toxic info environment and threw in with the guy who sold a tempting lie. Hope over reason. She blocked out negatives. It’s sad.
Counting on a person willing to ignore the imminent danger to so many vulnerable people for her own prirorities is a bad bet.
It also doesn't = she's an enemy
She's a typical human who has blind spots that prevented her from judging Trump and Kamala correctly. Correcting people's blind spots is a good goal. That still doesn't = Dem campaign strategy.
If she now has a moral epiphany, the tent door is open, but there is no reason to expand the tent to cover that sort of immoral transaction.
