Wonder if news editors are going to realize people knew about an actual coup an hour-plus earlier on bluesky than twitter. Hearing a lot of that rumbling from old friends still in the legacy content mines today.

I'm just sick at heart that we have lost the ability to depend on once-dependable sources like WaPo. I worry that too many people don't understand this yet and that's why so many voted as they did on Nov 5. I hope we can come back from this as a nation...
I don’t think so. The accounts I saw were mainly Korean academics/political watchers and Korean-American accounts (like @sarahjeong.bsky.social from The Verge).
I’ll keep asking why journalists (especially American journalists) are still posting on Twitter. It’s basically 8chan, but the owner is also throttling their content.
Because they know if they start their gaslighting bullshit on here like they did on Twitter to help prop up Trump, they're gonna get cussed out and blocked.
They’re paid to promote their stories. All the evidence says Twitter is throttling news sites/links. Why not go the place with the best engagement? (Bluesky)
I've seen this before. In 2009 I was doing a nonprofit training for @globalgiving.bsky.social in Nairobi on this new concept of "social media" and it was interrupted by unrest in the city.
So we pulled up twitter's feed and showed the group. It had more real info than their textings. Proof.
For it to appear in Twitter dumb- fuck Musk would have to first wait for someone to feed him a far right conspiracy take to retweet . There's no one else left on twitter apart from bots nazi incels and TEMU ads..
At this point, it has to be laziness. They don’t want to start over & are clinging to their followers counts not understanding those counts are full of bots and dormant users. + Information is being manipulated to such a severe degree that news cannot travel.
I saw a new alert about it when Yoon made the declaration and when I checked Bluesky 90 seconds later there were already two reporters outside the National Assembly reporting live here.
@sarahjeong.bsky.social , @antonhur.com and @kfriedhoff.bsky.social as well as the livestream from MBS that Anton Hur talked about (but I don't speak Korean so it was mostly for the visuals). And this post was amazing: https://bsky.app/profile/adamjschwarz.bsky.social/post/3lcg46lagl22d
I saw the jan 6 coup on Twitter (in the before times), told my husband to change the station he was watching to a news station. None of them were covering it....it didn't take an hour, but twitter was first.
I didn't even realize this until I saw this tweet now. First thing I saw in the morning here was all the tweets and news about what happened in S. Korea. Haven't much of a peep still on twitter, and nothing trending about it, yet. . .here we are now. . .still zippo there.
I've been on & of Twitter all day & it wasn't once trending. Why is that? It's a major news story & should have been all over the platform. Why did musky want it silenced?
If you’re still on Twitter expecting to get breaking news, you’re the same as someone waiting for the stagecoach delivery while everyone else is clustered around the telegraph.
It had been so long since I'd seen you on Twitter, seeing this tweet across my TL was like seeing an old friend. Lotta weird parasocial experiences happening in the movie to bluesky. Anywho, nice to follow you again!
New to Blue Sky.. never did twitter or Facebook .. think is downfall if society but I 70. Love the Meidas touch and all affiliates and now know twitter is the downfall for sure. Angry as Hell but gonna listen pitching about the CROOKED CABINET and actually now don't mind getting old
maybe a viral video on Twitter will be from today in Korea, maybe it'll be from years ago that they stole from Telegram, maybe it'll be lazily AI generated
The stagecoach have decided that actually Yoon was the good guy in this and the US deep state is involved. Because nobody anywhere in the world can do anything without the US telling them. And apparently it is very efficient. But also can’t get my highway to be free of potholes.
It showed up surprisingly fast on Fedi, too - I saw it there before here (which of course doesn't mean it was there first).
It seems to have shown up on Fedi quickly because of people with personal connections in Korea.
It was seriously amazing today, reading skeets from folks on the ground, as it happened. Gives me hope that one day we can do that for weather events again, but now on Bluesky instead of Twitter.
It was happening in the big wind storm that hit the Seattle area a couple of weeks ago. Weather experts and those experiencing it were skeeting enough to know what was going on around the region.
I would not expect that they will figure that out until 3 or four events happen with this sort of a lead time on BlueSky. I'd kind of like to see USGS Earthquake and or natural disaster, and NWS to have a presence here that they update as fast as they have on their twitter feeds. We'll see.
Nice to see Bluesky hopefully becoming a new home for citizen journalism of this kind, now that "citizen journalism" on twitter is old photos or AI images captioned with made-up claims by grifters and nazis and quote-tweeted by Musk with "!" or "🎯" or "concerning"
in this case, the person who posted that is a journalist journalist, it's just not her usual beat and she was on vacation. @sarahjeong.bsky.social is with The Verge
Right, I was using the term a bit loosely, but I do think what she was doing here was closer to citizen journalism in that she wasn't sent as a journalist on a particular beat to get a particular story, just giving a primary-source account of what she saw on the ground, in person, as it unfolded
Something I found remarkable is how people had already moved on to making shitposts about the coup before I found out about the coup. Same with the muppets story. News moves *fast* here.
If it's more or less acknowledged that the story "broke" here in terms of global social media, this will further strengthen the network effect of BS and undermine twitter for anyone remaining there who still cares about real-time news.
With people on the ground there delivering second by second accounts. Reminds me of Twitter during the color revolutions. When it was a MUST HAVE to see what was going on. Let’s keep building on it!
That’s what hooked me on Twitter. I saw no use for it personally before realizing it was real-time on the ground news for big events. Of course Leon burned it down, but I’m stoked about the positive direction on here.
TBF it was like that for some time before I left. I never know when it’s time to leave a party. They kept saying “no, stay” so I kept staying. I’m not proud.
I don’t want my name taken so I left it up.🔒 I don’t miss it because the things I liked about it, we have here. What I disliked about it is mostly not here. I checked what lists I am on and most are from 2023 with people calling me a transphobe.🤷♀️ When BlueSky was smaller, it wasn’t all 🌈 🌈 🌹🌹
Since I tend now to open Bluesky sooner than Twitter, I am one of those who knew earlier. I'll never be ungrateful for the speed with which so many great journalists around the world joined Bluesky; we need their voices, and today's happenings in SK are a reason why.
Newspapers gave you updates maybe twice a day. Then television gave you updates each hour.
BlueSky is here and now.
The next step is to tell me the news ahead of time. And tomorrow's lotto numbers...
Further evidence that liberals fleeing Twitter are killing democracy because they aren’t notifying the “town square” of current events. You hate to see it.
It's going to drive Musk nuts if Bluesky establishes itself as the defacto active/real-time news source.
I think today was a good experience, but it still lacked the depth of coverage Twitter had in its hay day. But, we're growing and improving bu the hour.
Real-time news and sports are the only two arguments left for Twitter. If real-time news goes it is a massive blow for a social network that is already quickly dying.
He still cares about relevancy. He wants to own the town square & enjoys picking winners and losers. Don’t fool yourself, if he can - he’ll come after this place with every lever Trump grants him to use. He’s an overgrown child and he’s going to cry over losing the top spot.
This place? Bluesky?
Don't get me wrong. I love this - particularly right now.
But this place will not last.
There's no model for BS to sustain itself as it is that I can see.
That might be Elon or it might be anyone.
I'm enjoying it as long it lasts. It's a real joy being in this.
But I don’t think he figured he’d purchased one election, he thought he’d purchased The Most Important Media Site. I think he hoped his influence would last more than a couple of years.
I suppose Twitter was too preoccupied by things of grand importance like right wing trolls pretending to be pedophiles on Bluesky instead of covering silly little things like a country almost backsliding to a military dictatorship in real time
Beautiful to see the start of the post --> op-ed --> buzzfeed article pipeline in action. Maybe even add on --> onion article if the narrative really takes off!
Were they too busy arguing with each other and watching bots chat with other bots to realise a failed coup was happening? Another W for Bluesky and another very common L for shitter 👍
To hell with them. Legacy media has been one massive fail for a LONG time. They’re so busy playing mean-girl over Biden pardoning his kid, that they missed actual, real news
Did they miss it? Past giving them benefit of doubt. They’re every bit as aggressively, willfully myopic as middle schoolers w/o accompanying excuse that their prefrontal cortexes haven’t yet developed & they’re thus incapable of distinguishing between important & trivial matters. It’s a choice.
That’s doubly hilarious, because I’m a middle school teacher—and a couple of my students have more developed brains than some of the choads in our media.
I’m a learning specialist. The kids are waaaay more sophisticated. And far less cynical. I feel so terrible we’ve failed them as a society. Hurts every day to have to face them knowing that.
Not to change the subject, but is it choads or chodes? I've always spelled it the latter, now I'm not sure. Maybe I'll start writing choades, just to spice things up.
It’s almost like a reverse chronological experience allows folks to find things out in real time as opposed to an algorithm that deplatforms based on keywords and eight dollar subscription statuses.
They haven't been quite the same since the new management made the content miners drill through the walls separating the mine shafts from the city sewers.
Not only heard about the South Korean coup here earlier than twitter but was able to quickly gather most of the relevant facts from experts here and people on the ground there posting on Bluesky!
Figuring that Twitters useful network effects are really contracting. I have a smallish following here, many from Twitter and way more actual content engagement with only 24M users
Interesting. Suggests something about what type of posters migrated, vs didn't. Not just for the original sources, but also for the rapid sharing that got visibility and captured attention.
I believe this, but I don't get how and assume I'm missing something. I haven't been able to find any clear to use equivalent to Twitter's what's trending on here, and have kept checking back in on Twitter just for that
I’m using the Top (1hr) feed for this. (Feeds in navigation bar is the # symbol; discover new feeds; type that title in, subscribe/follow & pin to home.)
how could you have heard about it yesterday? it started at 22:23 local time in Korea on Tue Dec 3. unless you live in a timezone +2hr east of there but west of the international date line, you heard about it today.
first place i heard about it was on mastodon (i'm on a small instance with a BUNCH of very politically minded friends lmao that's an anomaly i think), then bluesky a few minutes later, and i checked twitter out of curiosity and i was being fed gamer culture war ragebait instead
bluesky is where i heard the boots on the ground updates though, mastodon only provided me links to articles/awareness that it was happening in the first place
Oh, they know. They had the same information at the same time and chose not to immediately run it before they could see if it matched donor/state-approved narratives. It's not that you knew sooner. It's that they think they can hide it until it's convenient to talk about it.
The company of which I am employed by stopped posting on the hellsite but still isn't here on any official capacity cause 'we are waiting to see if it grows'. OK corporate idiots!

Let’s buy #MSNBC and fix it.
Not any more! Dethroned in another category.
What is your timeline?
Many of us know each this for months leading up to J6th.
They don't want any parts of this.
So we pulled up twitter's feed and showed the group. It had more real info than their textings. Proof.
An hour earlier. With better engagement.
That is, not how the South Korean developed in English-written Twitter or Bluesky, but how it developed in Korean-written Twitter or Bluesky.
It’s been the case for a long while

Also, the stagecoach is full of Nazis.
“They’re saying the sheriff is near.”
"Oh look, the stagecoach was robbed."

Time to head for the diners and see what Americans are thinking about eggs. 🥚
Also just kinda fucking hate myself for typing that out.
But I'm not patting myself on the back. Elon helped me make this decision!!!
Just sayin 🤗

good reason to subscribe to The Verge
Cause I think it would be cool if we could all just stop talking about Twitter. At all. Ever. Yesterday.
So sad.
is erinscafe here?
Hopefully, that will change soon here.
BlueSky is here and now.
The next step is to tell me the news ahead of time. And tomorrow's lotto numbers...
But if you've got @dieworkwear.bsky.social you're in the clear
I think today was a good experience, but it still lacked the depth of coverage Twitter had in its hay day. But, we're growing and improving bu the hour.
I don't think he GAF about whether live news breaks on his site.
Mind you, given he and Trump are both raging narcissists, what's the odds they have a falling out at some point if Trump feels he's being unstaged ?
Don't get me wrong. I love this - particularly right now.

Energy Americans need to imbue and exude once push comes to shove if you don't wanna be shipped off to the camps showers and ovens
They haven't been quite the same since the new management made the content miners drill through the walls separating the mine shafts from the city sewers.
Straight up the only place where you could have tracked it from beginning to end in real time with accurate sources on the ground
They're too busy clutching pearls over Hunter getting a pardon

Nice to see breaking news make it to Bluesky. Let's see more of that.
i jumped to shitter ... it was right there trending, 2 seconds.
meanwhile i scroll the NEWS tab here for 1/2 hour & STILL never find the story.
so much for that....
Still that was one voice — I did get my most up to date news herein BlueSky.
But just saying, the old place is not totally dead yet.
