I was allways against Jailbreaking my Normal Handhelds, expect the Flashcards for GBA and DS, therefore i got me a few Homebrewhandhelds like the Pyra, some of the Anbernics, and the Retroid Pocket Flip2 soon
It was a pretty damn good piece of hardware around the time but they really screwed up with the memory card size and prize and the availability of games D:
Sony failed it because they kept treating it as a lesser to home consoles rather than its own thing. Every game released was always a lesser spin-off of a console game whereas when Nintendo made a game for a handheld, that game was the next big thing
I've only had mine for a little over a month so I haven't figured out all the kinks and there are a few... but the screen is Beautiful and my connection has been great. I even updated to Playstation Premium for the remainder of my time so I can just stream and not have to wait.
The Playstation Portal isn't a handheld console, it's a streaming device that's best paired with a dedicated console.
I'd rather get the Steam Deck by that definition - I don't want to have to shitcan my upload speeds if I want to play a game that has zero online dependency.
I bought one a few years ago as I couldn't game when it was originally released great bit of kit. Since then bought a SteamDeck but would love a Vita with SteamDeck power.
I have the Vita. It definitely had features for a lot of unique opportunities for interesting games, that were in largely squandered on junky games instead. I mean a few were good, like Wipeout or Assassin's Creed. The Qr code ones was too few, and the PS Store just had too many uninteresting ones.
I still have mine, it works fully, and it houses all of my digital PSP games + a couple PS1. Of course I also have some of the best games for the system. It's a literal powerhouse combining the best of the 2000s and 2010s.
I still have mine and use it daily. I hacked it so I could have more storage space too. Being able to play PSP games on it and emulate so many other consoles is so fun too. There's also quite a few otome games that have been fantranslated into english on the Vita too!
This thing was years ahead of time. It had amazing build qualitiy, OLED was huge for its time and Uncharted a perfect launch title. Sadly Sony dropped first party support too soon …
I love the ps vita. I wish it had been supported more. It's a great handheld and I still have mine. Unfortunately the game I've been playing lately, stardew valley, won't be getting the newest update.
I got one in the drawer next to my PC, been using it to play some VNs, other casual games or PSP games I wanted to try but never got to buy. It’s so easy to mod the PSV now that if you own one you can give it a second life.
I still have my little lime green one, and it is still the best gaming device I've ever held in my hand. Controllers included. It just feels wonderful to hold and interacting with always felt so right.
I'm still partial to the PSP just out of nostalgia, but both of these are just peak mobile gaming to me. An actually pocketable handheld that could play (for the time) modern and good-looking games. I hope we get some more like this based on smartphone SoCs with how powerful those are now.
From personal experience with one: it's not an amazing OLED. It's very suspectible to degradation and production problems especially now
Still a damn good looking display and beats the hell out of the LCD slims imo
real, I have both in my household, one is mine and the other was a gift from me to a brother.
They're very neat consoles, lil bro only uses his to play undertale though 💀
Vita was an amazing console ruined by proprietary memory cards. If it used microSD or even standard SD, it would have done incredibly better than it did imo
I worked at GameStop when it came out and so many people balked at the price of the memory cards and just walked away. I loved the vita, but it’s a hard sell when you have to spend an additional 100 bucks right out the gate.
The Vita and 3DS XL. So many great games.
Sony’s new Portal is a laggy POS that doesn’t beat a ~13yo handheld; and they killed the store so it’s not even worth buying a used one to redownload my games.
It was ahead of its time for real, unfortunately Nintendo consoles had them beat in the marketing department at the time.
Maybe now that stuff like the Steam Deck + various windows handhelds are becoming popular Sony will feel like experimenting w/ a Vita sequel of some sort?
For me, it did great. It was a good device in its time. Ultimately, I sold it to a friend because I felt my love for it had finally reached its course. But it was a great device. At least it's being taken care well by my friend up to today.
The 2nd PS handheld I got after the PSP Go. I never really got into them, but I think I've learned that I'm not really into handheld gaming. We also have a Switch, but I absolutely prefer playing it on the big screen instead of handheld.
Comments
Most everything else on it for me has gotten native PC ports, even Ninja Gaiden Sigmas so I can just run those natives on the Steam Deck.
Nice hardware mismanaged by Sony, otherwise.
This is next on my list.

Cannot recommend picking one up enough.
The menchildren in the fanbase ruined it for me.
Congrats.
Then they abandoned it 😢

Sometimes....people will have different opinions from you
And that's
O K A Y
Especially when it's over something like "I prefer internal storage on my portable system instead of depending on streaming"
I did not sell it, and waited until they were old enough to play #Tearaway 🫎
It was a more than worthy successor to the PSP, even if Sony didn’t think so.
It’s also a capable emulation device.
Even got a handful of original games.
I used to own one, but I ended up selling it, sadly, cause I was unemployed, and I needed the money.
If I still had it, I probably would've jailbroke it.
Had my entire PSP catalogue to fill it up with.
Still a damn good looking display and beats the hell out of the LCD slims imo
But the lcd was pretty bad.
I have both.
They're very neat consoles, lil bro only uses his to play undertale though 💀
Idk what it was about the game that fascinated me, even tho it was the worst black ops title thus far.
I’m aware of the CFW to use SD2Vita, which uses the Vita’s Game Cart slot
Sony’s new Portal is a laggy POS that doesn’t beat a ~13yo handheld; and they killed the store so it’s not even worth buying a used one to redownload my games.
That game, especially on Vita, brings me so much joy.

They made proprietary storage WAY too expensive, and had piss poor support outside of Japan.
Despite all that people *still* love it BUT for some dumb AF reason Sony still hates it and won't release any titles to the PSN back catalogue. 🤦🏻
Also The Vita self had a lot of good games and a lot of good backwards compatibility it was how I was able to play Loco Roco midnight carnival again
