With the death of Microsoft Windows 10 about 7 months away, you have an opportunity to a) break with the US tech broligarchs at Microsoft and b) save a pile of money by not racing out to buy a new computer and instead installing a version of GNU/Linux instead on your old computer.

Alternatively if you can't leave MS behind, get a used license for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and prolong the update cycle into 2027.
Only use it to try out some games that don't work on Wine or the Linuxlator.
I know that MS is going to charge $30/year if you want to keep Windows 10. But even that, I think, is only for 3 years.
Due to this, it isn't advertised to the public but you can buy used licenses, at least in EU.
Longer security update cycle simply means MS supports the version with updates longer than they do with Home/Pro.

when you can nomad(bsd) from usb ect

For me though I have additional requirements which warrants an install, especially since I'm reliant on bhyve among things.
If I need a Linux distro, I'll go either Devuan, Alpine or Chimera.
(while im picking you brain!)
i cant wander if you have any thought on / experience of SmartOS ?
for virt img stuff ??
after discovering the "alternative streams" fs "feature"
and other's
good to know though ftr
as much as i despise apple, the built in file sharing/networking is *chefs kiss*
i dig macOS itself just not the hardware
C'mon #steinberg when Linux?
And since I was once a SW developer on Unix, feel like Iβm home again. (And βviβ is still superior to emacs) π
I tried (and liked) Mint on an old laptop like 5 years ago, any distro suggestions for a gamer/wanna-be dev?
PCs today aren't that expensive.
Your time is...
A SteamOS beta was announced *for handhelds*

The machines that we have now are brilliant!
Wordstar was.
I hated WordPerfect especially because of its βreveal codesβ (look under the hood) feature!
Corel bought WP ages ago and it exists now only in my nightmaresβ¦
WP was big in the medical world for a long time too (that's where my mom used it a lot), but that's also been dominated by Word/O365 and Acrobat these days.
I messed around with an Ubuntu install a bit, but ended up killing it :-))
Very worth it. Lots of walkthroughs online.
Oh wait, weβve been saying this for decades.
Unfortunately, most people donβt have the desire or the time to learn how to use a Linux machine as their daily driver. I think itβs a good skill to learn, but people just wonβt do it.
At the very least I may try dual booting
You can even try it out without installing: either through a Live USB stick, or through a virtual machine (VM): https://itsfoss.com/install-linux-in-virtualbox/
For me, installing Linux was always the easy bit.
The hard part was installing any actual software that didnβt come included.
tar.gz files, makefiles, dependencies, gccβ¦
Has any of that changed in the past 20 years?
Where can I go to learn all of that magic?
Having to compiler source code (make, configure etc) is the worst case.
The biggest issue is dealing with file permissions since Linux is much more locked down than windows when it comes to access

I just wanna turn my game on and have it work, it's simple.
I have to use Outlook to get the link to my meeting. Do I need to upgrade?
Other computer is Windows 11.
Not going to move to Linux and deal with a new operating system for this one use.
so sick of see everything is entangled with computerisation.
If she's mainly using it offline, you may want to think about taking it offline completely and keep whatever is on it.
through my time using this site I'm genuinely wonder why no one really missed the time where people dont have to rely on computers to live...instead they just play this "moving goalpost" game of switching to foss instead of proprietary.
Just sayin.
Not that I have to worry, I've been a Linux user for 19 years, lol
It makes your computer less completely yours.
Letβs see there massive rollout of win11 without the consumer β fixingβ the problems like the past releases
But like I said the user will fix MS poor software

Cubase is superior to any Linux DAW Iβve used, especially Reaper.
I have yet to find a replacement for Visio on Mac or Linux
Reality? About 10% of users are locked-in to some Windows-only thingee. The rest not.
The good news is, it is way much better than the two. π
So I will probably have a look at the good old MAS to get a bit more life out of 10.
In my current desktop situation, an upgrade would probably pay for itself within the expected lifetime of the device.
New runs linux, too!
Ending the support and telling people to "upgrade" to 11, but people can't unless they upgrade their pc just to run this shitty operating system. So people are stuck in this middle ground and can't go either way
...I'm still on win10. This used to my win7 system. I'm still surprised it's working great.
I keep my os drives, my oldest is 98se.
Having used MSW versions since 3.1, I'm prepared to give Linux a try.
2012 Macbook Pro and 2013 Mac Pro running current version of MacOS via OpenCore
2013 Dell slim tower (3G i7) and 2019 Lenovo Ideapad (8G i3) running current version of Linux Mint 22.1
2024 Acer Nitro V 15 running Windows 11 for games.
I do *nothing* important on the windows machine.
It should run on most computers, ranging from 256MB old systems with pre-configured swap to the latest powerful boxes. 512MB RAM is the recommended minimum for antiX. Installation to hard drive requires a minimum 7.0GB hard disk size.
Am I wrong?

Iβm only using Windows because I need an x86 machine for digital design (Quartus does not run on arm) and Terasic tools are Windows only, but I think Iβll find a Linux wayβ¦
Thanks for the advice !
I like the state of flow and relaxation too I get in Linux!
hell, even in your example, you cant do iOS dev outside of macOS
As for daily driver, LM is actually great to get out on the net and poke around, or do banking etc, is easily made fairly secure, and is not chock full of bloatware, so great for my old-folks.
That's just not what makes a good daily driver though in my opinion.
Someone has to do it for them.
Plenty of other -- open source/community supported -- flavors available.
Also, it's always been a bit flaky for me, so I keep half a dozen USB sticks available πΊ
I agree with u btw. It's wasteful
If you don't have very specific hardware needs, Linux is absolutely there.
At the same time, OP pointing out that now is the best time to make the switch is very true, I think.
It's surprisingly friendly.
Just like any other computer.
A long way from the days of scavenging drivers from windows for wpa_supplicant to get wifi.
We were paying $3-4K for computers and they were obsolete within 2 years. That was 1990 dollars, too.
D) You can bypass all the install requirements and install on unsupported hardware.
Despite a few small issues, all my games work and all the software I use mostly work (including those that need WINE). Feels quite refreshing not using Windows anymore tbh
