Alina Habba: "New York used to be one of the greatest cities in the country. And we will make it that way again. We will make it safe and we will allow tourism, we will allow people to drive to work, not have to take unsafe subways."

The Trump Administration knows this could be the issue that takes them down. Undermining states rights is an imperative for them. @chrislhayes.bsky.social @aoc.bsky.social
As someone who lives in L.A. I always laugh seeing clips like this. Most folks in these cities don’t feel this way at all, and, they often feel the exact *opposite.* Please stay away if you can’t enjoy these wonderful places.
I just drove my daughter from the Upper West Side to Flatiron. It took 20 minutes!! It used to take 45 minutes at this hour. Congestion pricing is miraculously effective!
Exactly. Does she realize how many millions of people use the iron horse? I literally can’t take much more of the stupidity coming out of this administration. There’s an ulterior motive here as always.
I believe a lot of it is about revenge. Trump always wanted to be accepted in NYC. He wasn't. He was rejected, and pretty much kicked out. So this is his revenge. He is trying to control it on a federal level & now by having its mayor beholden to him, he is trying to rule is with an iron fist.
This is true, I was going to go to Manhattan but ALL of the booking apps had pop ups telling me that no tourists were allowed so I booked for Cincinnati instead.
I'm curious what legislation they think they can bring that will force New Yorkers to purchase vehicles, pay for insurance and maintenance, along with paying for storage and parking. Will they legislate making an island have more room too?
It's like Elon thinking he can sue for not using Twitter. 🙄
Trying to legislate consumers is just folly. Not that they won't try of course. And when they do, it will harm the poor and those with fewer resources, of course. Rinse, repeat.
It all makes more sense when you read about what Republicans and pr2025 want cities to be, they want the city to be a theme park for wealthy suburbanites to visit in their SUVs, they don't care about people living in the city or workers there at all
They rarely do think about the peasantry. I live in Vegas. Watching how locals who work in a service industry town are treated is a learning experience on the haves and the have nots.
I noted they were recently bashing congestion pricing and increased parking rates at certain times of day. I’m not sure why they think the feds can control that, but since they own the mayor now and are extorting him to go along with their agenda, maybe that’s their plan.
I recall a study around ten years ago that showed Manhattan would require an additional 48 bridges or tunnels if everyone who worked here drove in, and that 80% of the island would have to be given over to parking. ....I would really love to know if these people even understand how cities work.
Personally I think restricting traffic in city centers is a good idea. But it needs careful thought and consideration. You need a campaign to explain the benefits and possible perks for curbing congestive traffic.
There’s a better approach to this issue. One that would avoid all this controversy.
Some ppl, even ones born in nyc, are always scared to take subways, even when they were at their safest. It's weird. They're not scared of killing or getting killed on the roads - which is much more likely - they consider that God's will.
Fox News is a nazi PR channel, set up to create division and polarizing the US by blasting desinformation from the WH and president Musk, the Swasticar man.
Habba...how the hell did she EVER get any kind of ...who the hell is sniffing?? Snotty nose in the Fox studio? Hegseth there somewhere?
(digress-sorry)
Congestion pricing cleared the streets there! It has been one of the best things for NY in ages!!
Shit, get that sniffing dipshit to go blow! Gross!
Because Alina has studied congestion pricing and the problem of too many vehicles in the city extensively, right? I mean she is just like Trump. She knows more than the experts on every single subject, or she is lying. I think she is lying.
Second - the only way everyone is driving to work in NY is if Trump kills the economy so badly that there are only a few places to go to work (not efficient for everyone to drive - there is no infrastructure for this and would be impossible to build).
The fascists don't care about the truth, only about what they can make people believe. That's why they're not embarrassed when caught lying. The truth doesn't matter.
Yeah, increasing traffic in the city will lead to even more people taking the subway (most do anyway even with financial means to drive because it's much quicker)which will make the subways so much safer 🙄. MAGA love this since most of them have never left their own states and know nothing about NYC
Man.. I just spent a week there with my little kid without ever setting foot in a car and had a blast. Thank you for letting me know we actually almost died and, uh, were not tourists or something?
So how and why was this corrupt criminal traitorous regime able to stop a state from having this law on the books? It was put into effect and working so what happened to states rights?
ALL of us would use public transit by choice, both locally and across the province if it was safe, clean, reliable, efficient and accessible. Car-focused bandaids such as building and widening highways, building tunnels, or removing bike lanes are costly, short-sighted and counter-productive.
A lot of Americans wouldn’t. When I try to convince people, especially conservatives, I can win any argument about cost, traffic, business growth, etc. But it always gets to “well I don’t want to be around those people though” and I can’t debate the irrational need to have people to look down on.
My son told me one of his black friends (in a very rural white area) is being harassed every day when she leaves work by a guy in a pig mask. But tell me again about the dangerous city.
I’ve been to NYC as tourist many times and it’s not the city Habba Dabba Do is describing. I take the subway all the time I’m there. Where are they going to park those cars she will “allow” people to work? Who are they to “allow” us to do anything? Go back to looking pretty, not smart.
If you break the windows of a car with a defaced plate that the NYPD refuses to do anything about, that’s going to be a really interesting courtroom argument
Gee, when did they stop "allowing" tourism in New York?
And the violent crime rate per capita in NYC is about 1/3 the rate in my hometown (KC). We have always felt safe on NY sidewalks and subways.
When I visited NY, I rode the subways all over the place. I never felt unsafe. On every ride, people gave me a seat if there wasn't one available. I couldn't imagine, as a tourist, having to drive myself around that city. The subways quickly get you everywhere.
Oh there she is, I was wondering where that winless criminal lawyer was. The rapist's personal windup side hustle.
Pretty sure FFOTUS likes her better with her mouth full. 😂🤡🖕
Fox must be hard up to give her a voice, she is still auditioning to try to get a seat in KKKing DonOld's Court..
Prince Elmo would need to approve that move..
Has this cow even been to NYC??? Holy shit. I visited decades ago & it can’t be better now in terms of traffic. Back then it was insane. There is no way you’re going to have most people driving. What an absolutely dumb shit thing to say. I swear all these felon ass kissers only spout lies.
That explains things although I would think with parking pretty much non-existent that she would have plenty of business. So not only a lying cow but a grifting one too.
I was literally on the NYC subway twice this week. I’ve taken a bus from NJ (Hudson County) to NYC almost every working day since 2012. Alina Habba has no idea what she’s talking about. Only paranoid bigots hate public transport.
Before speaking on this, people should be required to live in NYC for a month, with meetings planned in various locations. THEN, maybe they would be able to see it is impossible for everyone to be driving.
Surge pricing (aka price gouging) is fine when corporations do it, would be fine if it was a Republican idea, not cool when a Democrat does it, apparently.
Why don't these depraved weirdos focus on fixing the places that voted for them. Alabama is verging on being a failed state, Alina, go "fix" that and leave our cities alone.
Because bullies love to punish people who didn’t vote for them and they have a cool, smart, female Go senior who doesn’t put up with bs. The toddler gets off on subjugating and punishing women.
The racist dog whistle is audible: Middle-class suburban whites want to visit New York City with as little interaction as possible with the people who live there.
Well looky looky. Really do find out something new every day. Her husband gregg reuben is the ceo of a company called centerpark strategy. So of course she would love for NY ers to be driving in. Where to park? Hubbys parking garages. Always comes down to the grift. https://www.centerparkus.com/strategy/
Pedestrian use of the streets is up in Manhattan's congestion zone. That includes workers, shoppers, and tourists. Do "people" only count when they drive in from New Jersey?
I personally like the subways and never had a problem on them in Chicago or in New York when I lived there. This comes from a place of privilege because she's too entitled to be seen with the common folk. Also, driving is a privilege not a right.
Could you imagine how unlivable, unenjoyable NYC would be without subways and commuter rail … where the gridlock of 8 million cars would extend to Tappan Zee and once you finally arrived you’d spend the rest of the day looking for a place to park?
Most New Yorkers don't even have a car, and if they did, they don't want to sit in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour to drive down the street. Not only that, but who TF wants to pay a million dollars for public parking? So freaking ridiculous. The City has a great public transit system. Use it!
The only joy in that clip is to mute the sound.
I’m thinking tourism might suffer in general: planes ✈️ oops
Bird 🦅 Flu, no thanks
Visit a national park 🚗🚙🚌🚗🚎🚗l think not, especially if you get locked in the loo & DOGE has fired the only locksmith. 🤷🏼♀️
For the benefit of folks outside the NYC metro area, a first-hand take. Tourism is alive, you can drive wherever you want, it's as safe or safer than anywhere else -- including the subway.
And as someone who worked in Manhattan for 25 years, nobody *wants* to drive to work in the congestion zone.
There are certainly people who *have to*, but nobody wants to. It takes forever, and parking is incredibly expensive. Take whatever it would cost to park in a mid-size city's downtown and multiply it by 20. That's the baseline in Manhattan.
You will "allow tourism" in NYC? The place has always been crawling with tourists. And hotel prices have skyrocketed in recent years, yet somehow people keep coming.
Even so, NYC is the number 1 city in the country for the number of tourists that visit it each year. The idea that tourism is dead in the city is laughable. Even now, in the middle of February, I pass dozens of European tourists wandering downtown on my way to work
i mean, fuck those guys, but I also think that a lot of blue areas have used "crack down on airbnb" as a smokescreen to avoid having to solve the real problem, which is "we should let cities build more housing"
Real Q - is anyone stopping hotels from being built, or is this a function of supply & demand? Buildings are being built, but all pretty pricey housing. Hotels must not make sense financially, or is there really more to it?
I'm not actually sure if this was approved or not, it seems that COVID might have been the deathblow
but yes, NYC and especially manhattan make building *anything* extremely difficult and expensive, which is why the only new housing is for millionaires
lol yeah of one the most visited cities in the world has no tourists.
I’m guessing this woman has no one who actually cares about her because if she did they’d have advised her to just stop talking because every word out of her mouth show how brain dead she is.
It's typical Trump World propaganda - they create their own "reality" with their lies and spin. And people believe them and are living in this fake alternate universe. It's so weird.
Meanwhile my 22-year old navigated the subway from Brooklyn into the city last night for dinner. She made her way to CT on the train for an interview today. Driving in NYC is already a nightmare…public transportation is the way to go for most people. Tourism is ever present in NYC! 😂
Not to mention expensive. Imagine people adding on the expense of a car payment, auto insurance, AND $50 parking every day? Nevermind the inflation that's coming from the tariffs. She's lost her mind.
There are gas stations (though not many) if you know where to look, but gas is generally less expensive outside the city so if you are a commuter who drives in, it's better to gas up at home.
It depends on where you work and what hours. If you work in midtown or the financial district, you're out of your mind to try to drive there. I was a bartender in the Village for years, and worked nights, and although sometimes it could take a while to find a spot, I drove in.
And making it fucking dangerous to fly there. I 'have' to go to NY twice a year (in laws) and we have given serious consideration to flying into Montreal and driving to NY from there.

Cities (with their heavily pluralistic demographics) are on average MUCH SAFER for individual people than living in rural areas full of white people.
By that I mean she can really sprout total bullshit!

The city
Is
So busy.
Tourists
from everywhere.
Gawking.

/sigh
I hope.
Never been to Harrisburg.
Because of the f*cking congestion you dumb, country bumpkin asshole!
(Guessing she's chauffeured everywhere)
Won’t visit while Trump or his ilk is in power.
Vistors to NYC in 2024 were they highest they have been since pre pandemic.
This twatwaffles needs to STFU and worry about her own constituents.
Only took a car to and from the airport.

It's so upsetting to see people like this succeed.
Put everyone on the road in cars.
Second - the only way everyone is driving to work in NY is if Trump kills the economy so badly that there are only a few places to go to work (not efficient for everyone to drive - there is no infrastructure for this and would be impossible to build).
if subways remain dangerous haven’t they failed to achieve their goal?
I mean, everything else aside, let’s look at the logistics of parking in NYC.
And it was pretty safe back when I lived there, over 20 years ago.
MAGAts never have real solutions.
I don't think it can be both...
Because it’s sure not the New York we all know.
What would make NYC great again is if we can get rid of that shit stain Trump Tower on 5th Ave it stinks like a strip club at closing time.
And the violent crime rate per capita in NYC is about 1/3 the rate in my hometown (KC). We have always felt safe on NY sidewalks and subways.
Subway and walking>>>cars anyday everyday
It’s difficult to walk 100 yards and not see a police officer. I never felt unsafe there. ❤️ NYC

big own goal
that NYC can't build hotels is insane
For example, cranes. A small but growing city will have more cranes going than all of NYC at any given moment, because of NYV's crane regs.
