My fondest ethics class memory was the professor trying to dock my grade for me missing too many classes but I successfully argued he cancelled more than I missed so me getting a bad grade and him suffering no negative consequences was unethical. Got an A. I salute your increasingly hard job.
i'm glad you're teaching ethics! however, it's crucial to consider the importance of fact-based reasoning and evidence-based moral frameworks to ensure we're discussing ethics in a responsible and informed manner.
Some great real time anecdotes and real time world stories as reference materials
Enjoy
I know i have adapted some of my leadership materials based on the AES and stopped using uk or usa germany or france other than as poor examples of leadership
As a science and engineering teacher, I can happily avoid talking about current events (almost) entirely. I do not envy those who teach social studies at my school.
I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist, and in order to renew my License every two years, I have to have 4 in-person credit hours of Ethics, and 2 credit hours of Cultural sensitivity, as part of the 25 required CEUs.
What other jobs in America require this? It's not enough, I know that much.
I'm really stoned right now my brownies kicking in and I want you guys to know that I see an old man in that picture with a crown on it he looks sad for Lauren and he's looking to his right maybe he sees his castle under Siege or he has a bad case in the cramps and needs to dookie
I taught ethics for engineers for over a decade, and I wish you luck. It was disenhartening to listen to some of the students arguments & behaviors.
Class felt like it was "ripped from the headlines" so many times. Ugh
Teaching ethics this semester.
I have consistently found the majority of my students to be upright and moral and genuinely puzzled that others are not.
There are a lot of people that could benefit...simply: what's popular isn't always right and what's right isn't always popular. Thank you and I wish you luck.
You start the class with "America has no ethics or morals, and is in N-Stage capitalism. The time in history where tech bros formed an oligarchy in America.
Seriously!? Isn't that like a class on using an astrolabe? Actually, it would be fun to explore the interplay between what we do and what we think is right based on what we are taught, and how that evolves (or decays). It's a challenge, and those are fun to explore with inquiring student minds.
People like Trump have always existed but were generally considered fringe but now his behavior is considered acceptable by a significant minority. To me he exemplifies a total lack of character. To him ethics and morality equal weaknesses to be exploited. Sad commentary on our current society.
I’m so very grateful my child was able to take a trimester-long ethics class last year in high school. Our conversations are so interesting these days.
Which is to say, it might be wild, but keep doing the good work!
Right. I was/am thinking of a class on “citizenship” and the duties and burdens that go with the privileges. Based on Cicero’s writings (to his son) on the subject. Hugely applicable!
i took an ethnic studies course last spring. it felt like a wild time then before the election, but i can only imagine the conversations you’ll be having in that class.
This is how I imagine a lot of law/poli-sci folks are feeling. Every lecture starting with "umm ignore reality for a sec and what I'm bout to teach you is how things USUALLY go..."
You mean you'll try to teach an ethics class. Unfortunately too many young people have borne witness to the life "enhancements" that are reaped by being just the opposite - Justice Thomas being the poster boy for unethical behavior. So good luck with your teaching endeavor. You're going to need it.
Does it relate to access to patient information? A family member(doctor or nurse) accesses the medical files of a hospitalized family member? Not criminal access, where medical staff access strangers files to sell to press or insurance companies.
It's a long story, but the confidentiality is lacking, staff has no boundaries, staff shares way too much with patients, and shares patients' information with no regard for privacy. Also we have the social media issues where staff has patients as followers, etc.
Legal issue too for both staff and hospital. It is the experience of friends supervising similar in hospitals in Canada. Technological use without boundaries and social media encouraged by likes is a nightmare in all settings.
Our head nurse has her sons-2, nephew and their friends as Counselors and other staff. Makes it impossible to enforce ethical concerns. I'm older and ready to retire or I'd leave. I just don't understand why the company allows it.
Can you please tell me what ethics we should use for Nazis? Or is hanging them all by the neck until they die the only acceptable ethics for Nazis? Because I believe it is.
I’ve taught an ethics course to undergraduate business students for the past five years. Just got done our first week of classes. This is the worst it has ever been. I’m changing next week to spend two sessions on information literacy. I can’t describe the garbage they are throwing at me.
I’m a federal employee and I have to take ethics courses every year. I’d lose my professional license and my job if I did even a fraction of what our government leaders (Trump, Congress, some Supreme Court justices) have done. What hypocrisy. You are fighting the good battle!
Use simple concepts. Thou shall not bare false witness against thy neighbor. But for the grace of God there go I. Walk a mile in their shoe's. Judge not lest ye be judged. Do unto others as they would do unto you. Empathy and compassion can be taught.
Very strange learning ethics when that won the election. The class was specifically ethics in a pandemic world. It definitely made me more determined to resist though.
Federal employees are required to take an annual ethics course. It seems as though, like every other government rule, The Convicted Felon, his family and his appointees give the requirement their middle finger. Maybe talk about that in your class.
I majored in History and education in College
The engineering students use to give anyone a hard time that was not one of them
One of my teachers had to teach Engineering Ethics
He came in one day and said "You have to come see this class"
He was asking basic question we learned in 101 classes
Ethical people will lose over and over again until they've lost everything even though they're the actual winners in life. The ironic reality of the world we've created together.
I genuinely envy you in the best way. Teaching ethics in such a dynamic and challenging time is incredibly meaningful work. It provides a unique opportunity to explain complex concepts through vivid, real-world examples. Best of luck next semester!
I regularly taught an Animals and Ethics class I designed with lots of interdisciplinary readings and it was amazing—meaning, the students were amazing. Enjoy!!
Indeed. And I hope you don’t have to contend with unauthorized use of generative AI in your class—a super fun extra dose of unethical student behavior that’s made my ethics courses a real drag.
I taught a class with a focus on research ethics & medical ethics last semester. It was wild & I cannot imagine how much more batshit it will be if I teach it again fall 25.
Wild is probably an understatement. After nearly 30 years as an RN I am retiring early. I just can’t tolerate the paranoia, conspiracy and willful ignorance. We are in my opinion doomed.
Don’t know where you teach, but I hope it’s a business or tech school and not humanities students. The former really need some (positive) brainwashing.
A large number of people in business and tech seem to be resistant to the ethical mindset. That’s why I framed it as ‘brainwashing’. There must be a way to instill this in people who resist it using propaganda techniques. There are ethical considerations, of course, but we need to work on this.
I feel your pain. I teach stream ecology in odd numbered springs. Had to completely changes things around the last three times due to major changes to the clean water act right at the start of class.

No ethics & integrity, you get a sugar daddy and a seat at the table.
Both tough gigs!
Badly needed in the new culture.
Sex crimes? ✅️
Financial crimes? ✅️
Fraud? ✅️

And I got tired of typing before running out of things that are cool now.
They are suffering from a severe deficit.
He spoke about the difference between legality and morality.
And how in Nazi Germany it was legal to kill Jews but it was not ethical.
And I ponder what he would say about current events.
Best to you!
longer is pertinent to the ignorant majority in America.
My stomach hurts!
Ethics are evolving.

We could not help but laugh
that really got them upset
Like how are they teaching Constitutional Law now?!
It's all vibes - whatever those 6 nutjobs feel is right is what is going to happen. The Constitution is irrelevant.
How do you teach ethics when shame is dead and the most unethical person imaginable is POTUS?!
(**before they got Disneyfied)
Wild indeed.
