So here’s the update. The billionaire owner of the Guardian preparing to get rid of a core part of the news org + 100 journalists.
If you’re a Guardian or Observer reader, please share this. The need for a strong, free & independent press couldn’t be greater. Yet, here it is.

Throughout her life she’d regularly say
“Thank God for The Manchester Guardian”.
I remember “Ted’s Stand On Your Own Two Feet Game”.
What can we do.

I would never have contributed, or personally vouched for this org several times to friends, if it was the former.
😭
That also means accepting advertising or paying the real price for information... Otherwise... There's X, as Musk often says. Is that what we want? I don't think so.
Any info on how to show/provide support for them or any activities they’re undertaking?
Maybe that was a deliberate ploy by the owners to justify this move.
The Scott Trust isn't a person, it's not a billionaire like Jeff Bezos or whatever
Make the argument for not selling observer sure but having an endowment allows it be more independent, not less
Guardian owner Scott Trust has 1.3Billion in funds, it doesn't need the small change it gets from this deal.
And if they wanted to divest, and there seems no objective reason to divest, why not do it transparently?
The Guardian is owned by a trust not an individual billionaire
The media landscape in the UK is rotten, & the Guardian/Observer has been a beacon in the gloom.
I feel sorry for the individuals losing jobs but my biggest worry is for the future of UK free press that can counter the prevailing RW propaganda.
So who cares if it's gutted.
Selling the observer - the Sunday version and putting a paywall up
Obv fewer will read it
I find the whole thing confusing
eg Story about British charcuterie being as good as French, Spanish and Italian!
So Brexit is doing no harm!🇪🇺
I'm not sure what the future of unbiased journalism is, but I do know it's not billionaire-owned.

The Scott Trust board not reaching a decision today feels a bit like a stay of execution, but I'll take it for now. If we're lucky, we might get a bit more time to save the Observer.
This is important.
I want you to flood my timeline.
Reposts are fine so long as there's a decent interval.

"It’s owned, not by a billionaire, but by the Scott Trust, which was set up to preserve it in perpetuity and to promote the values of ‘press freedom’ and ‘liberal journalism’."?

And this is the first time I’ve ever heard ‘billionaire owner’ in the context of The Guardian. Did I miss something?
Contd…
Now they have ?
