How does one even qualify for a literary agent? Does one first create a work and find a following through that? Or are there other ways to go about it?

Most folks finish a book, and then they query it.

If it’s nonfiction, that’s when building up some kind of a following matters a little more. Writing essays, articles, establishing yourself.

With a novel though? Just the book matters. 😊

We need it. I just got a rejection from an agent I really wanted. My novel hit so many things on her list. She said she didn’t take MG. I died. My novel might be okay for YA, but definitely not younger than that. Either she didn’t read the sample or do I have to put in the query not under YA? Drat!

I’d make sure the category and genre are clear in the pitch. IE: My novel TITLE is a CATEGORY GENRE finished at WORD COUNT.

We look for that kinda stuff pretty quickly, and if it’s not there we might just assume.
