Oh, that happens like CLOCKWORK to Margaret Atwood (and she's actually ADMITTED, as an aside, she ALSO used not just Afghanistan but *actual things being promoted in Biblical Patrarchy circles* and *religiously motivated suppression of women in US history* as models)
I mean, it's almost as if almost all coercive political and religious movements (whether it's the Taliban, the New Apostolic Reformation, or whoever) have a common set of undue influence
(And as a NAR survivor: "The Handmaid's Tale" is UNDERSTATED compared to actual Christian Nationalism)
How can he be so silly not to realize that she showed how similar self-proclaimed „Christians“ can be to mullahs? Or that both flavors of patriarchal, pseudo-religious dinosaurs share a common view on women‘s role in life.
Fanatics pretending to be Christians are very afraid of the power if this book.
Wikipedia: „The book has been banned in school libraries in Florida, Missouri, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.“
Besides which the whole hand-maiden shit derives from the Old Testament story when some rich guy had a fertile young thing lie between his wifes legs while he "begat" a child upon her. Perfectly normal. Not weird at all.
But I suppose exactly the kind of droit de seigneur powers rich people want.
That's the benefit of a Sunday School education for you.
I'd suggest everyone read the Bible especially Christians who wrongly think it is the unalloyed word of God.
"This is obviously true...", and then a statement that makes it seem he can only think in a binary system of 0s and 1s. It's always like that, these days.
i get her newsletter and she said in one of them that she made sure that everything in that book was based on something that actually happened. didn’t specify any place or religion, just historical events. i doubt that dude read the book anyway.
He knows who she is and is lecturing her on her own book to "flaunt" his misoginy and his stupid political views around, as well as to farm for likes and RT
I mean...I deleted my Twitter account so I just googled and clicked on whatever post came up with this user. This is what I found. Their brain is vomit.
What will SCOTUS do? What will even a Blue House and Senate do if not 61 Senators?
Perhaps because I think this could get a lot worse and see a long road ahead anyway, I see the cloak being more a result of voting one way rather than a yoke lifted for voting the right way.
Not being a woman, it was perhaps a mistake for me to write anything other than ‘perfect cartoon’, but I see this vote as potentially saving women from the cloak rather than allowing them to doff it.
Oh 🙁.
Thanks for this detailed response.
As a non-🇺🇸 woman, I was hoping that a Harris win would mean that pro-choice rights wd b restored as they were before 2020. But I see now that they were eroded under *Biden* by SCOTUS, so…
The ‘choice’ is reflected in the result but not before (though one could argue that since the demise of Roe, the effort is there to make the cartoon more appropriate).
Women are already dying because of the anti-abortion laws. And it's not about not wanting the child, it's pregnancies gone wrong and hospitals following these laws and because of this the complications become devastating.
I should have said nothing because the issue is a) obvious and b) of significant and immediate concern to a chunk of the population and the cartoon itself is poignant enough to be ‘good’.
So that's the chip set up now ? They went from gays to furries to trans people to Muslims saying "women in islam don't have rights " meanwhile voting for women to loose reproductive rights and put on the door the voting rights too
Trump et al. have promoted the terrible combination of total ignorance and total confidence. As many women have said: "To have the confidence of a mediocre man..."
it 10000% is. tv shows are only rarely advertised with the name of the showrunner the way that books are, usually only if the showrunner is already very very well known and even then it's not nearly as prominent as a book's author. it's very common not to know the names of people who produced shows.
In the early days of twitter, I think it was genuine mansplaining, like women (in particular) get in the workplace, pub, life in general. Now I just assume all those types of replies, particularly from anon accounts, are just engagement farming. And it's made it here, so I guess it worked?
Using Islamic context to understand Christofascism *is* bad because it’s Islamophobic, and it’s really weird to see this guy say basically the same thing, but on the side of Islamophobia
I mean, people use the Taliban because the "Spanish Inquisition", while accurate, mostly brings up mental images of Monty Python. And honestly, I use the Iranian revolution, because it has the closest parallels of a more or less free society slipping into theocracy.
In any normal world this person would realise what he’s just done, delete all his social media accounts and spend the remaining decades of his pathetic life living as a hermit in some remote cave. But of course he won’t because he’s just a shameless git.
Hahahaha
What a plonker

Margaret Atwood was inspired by what happened in Afghanistan in writing The Handmaid's Tale, but of course the religious right in the US played a part too. It's reminding people that this could happen in any country. But of course, mansplainers will mansplain!
And as long as they refuse to acknowledge the parallels between their cult and orthodox islamism it will also be about Islam to them. So easy to just point at another while you mimic their behavior. See also antitheist supremacist and antifeminism meeting.
It is an interesting, and possibly challenging thought experiment, to put yourself into their shoes and follow the thought process that would lead to this post.
You’re a dude who grew up in a place where women always listen when you talk. You have no higher education but like to read online. Your friends, who never finished high school, call you the smart guy. They’re right. Being smart is easy, you usually just have to google things to figure them out.
Oh, just to be 100% clear. I did not refer to you in person, I tried your suggested thought experiment of figuring out who wrote the original post we’re joking about.
I call absolute bullsht on that take lol! She paid attention to the RWNJ Christofascist dominionists of AMERICA wrapped up in the BIBLE evangelicals & guess who is doing project 2025? Btw Stephen this is not to you , I can’t see the name of the OP. Anyhoo the RWNJ 7 mountains freaks have been workin
On this takeover for at least 4 DECADES but actually a lot longer. While we were all living our lives , growing up etc etc THINKING ppl were mostly all decent like WE- they were not & they were coming up with THE plan to do what they’re doing now. Ms Atwood is an extremely observant human .
Knowing Atwood, she must have torn that guy a new one, in the most casual murder in words. Atwood is amazing to watch when she gets mad. No heat, just pause and then slow, cold destruction, like an avalanche.
Just imagining Margaret seeing that, cracking her knuckles, aligning her mental crosshairs, and unleashing the full fury of pent up frustration that every writer carries within them right into his fucking face in tweet form.

Every thesis leads to its negation. Modern fascination with authorship brought about the death of the author. It makes sense that the death of the author will lead to its own death as well. Just as it is precisely the development of capitalism that brings about the proletarian revolution.
I freaked out for a second like, oh no this wasn’t mentioned in grad school. And then my sleep-deprived brain finally caught on to the fact that it is not used within my discipline—ya know, like other fields exist Niki, duh!
I'm not trying to be mean or snarky. I always felt insecure because everyone around me threw around theory with such confidence and I really did struggle to understand and use it in my work (you'd get serious side-eye at conferences if you didn't). Now I'm not going to be able to sleep. (jk)
i didn't read your post as ignorance; i was just trying to make a joke about how much you have to stretch the definition to give them something resembling the benefit of the doubt
Bro could just look up the Wikipedia article about the book to know that:
1. he's absolutely dead wrong, and that the author very clearly used Christian imagery as reference for setting.
2. that he's talking to the very freaking author of the book itself.
I quit watching the TV format after S1 as it often seemed needless violence porn. But hearing from and about Trumpists last months… it seems their dream world.
Anyway: it really sucks that since let's say twenty years ago, the anglophones stopped saying *christianISM* and started saying "christianITY" instead.👎😒

So of course everyone went and reposted the screenshot😂
I really dont miss those pathetic kids.
(This fell into my timeline somewhere else - though I did check that was real before I shared it here.)
I wish I hadn’t written that because first reaction is what matters for a cartoon.
The question comes down to where we are on a spectrum. My view: Things are bad, could get a lot worse.
Does voting/winning liberate? Or just freeze? What will state legislatures do?
Perhaps because I think this could get a lot worse and see a long road ahead anyway, I see the cloak being more a result of voting one way rather than a yoke lifted for voting the right way.

As it is, my pedantry got the better of me.
certainly hopeful this is prophetic, but hm
Have said that in a few responses and DMs.

By and by, lord, by and bye
We have a word for this already

Don't
Not a good idea
The guy joined X in October 2023
Who does that ? Seriously ?
(I've loved the novel since I first read it in the late 80s - but I stopped watching the TV adaptation too, for more or less the same reason.)

I feel like it's a lot easier to overlook a show writer than an author.
