Want to make a Dent in Things?
Rewire your brain to bring joy from the necessities in life.
Make grocery shopping more fun than planning a wardrobe. Feel the rewarding power of brewing coffee at home.
Nobody's saying you don't deserve nice things. But maybe rethink what nice is.

The simple things are beautiful, so let us beholders train our eyesight.
u can just whip it out and impress the hell out of everyone
speak Spanish, ride a wheelie, start a fire, solve a math problem, play the piano, code
all tucked nicely into your back pocket where ever you go
Tactile joy and not a lot of money
sadly I live in the southern hemisphere and dont get to enjoy my chrismas socks until 6 months later
Been breaking down and removing junk in our big storage room to make it more usable. Swapped out and twisted all the plumbing too.
It's a borderline cliché among us Midwesterners to reply to "Oh I love your new (item)!" by immediately declaring how good of a price we got on it 😅
You'll be surprised by how much enjoyment it adds to your shopping experience.
i love a good deal
There’s a special kind of joy in struggling for a while, and then affording rent and groceries with a little bit of money left over. it’s rare, but it’s magical.
So, I splurged a bit on an espresso setup.
Used gaggia espresso, new burr grinder:
$300 (less than a dollar a day over a year)
Just did the math and a standard latte using good milk and good beans costs me about 90 cents.
Much better than Starbucks too.
any tasty roasts lately?
Said roaster has been on an Ethiopian light roast kick lately and the ones I've tried have made phenomenal pour over.
Someday I'll do the gagguino mod, but I need to replace the group head to do that afik. (no three way solenoid)
It felt good to give it away to hopefully someone who will get more use from it — and also less clutter in mine.
Then about 3 hours later I felt less joy.
👍👍👍🙂🙂🙂
I am a lot happier *finally* getting a little hatchback that does exactly what I want than getting a shiny new sports car that doesn't.
Think about what *actually* makes you happier, and pursue that.
I run a #3dprinting business which began as a hobby.
Now, when I'm sometimes working late to meet a deadline or just because I am more creative in the evening, I put on some Pink Floyd and pretend it's 'hobby time'...
They were really good cinnamon rolls to be fair
maybe the split is consumerism which is a word IDK what it means really but I know it describes a culture built around consumption
capitalism is brass tacks only what is needed
I use frugality to mean "the best value" and "value" very much includes "the ratio between how much this benefits today's me and tomorrow's wallet"
FOMO isn't something a well-practiced Midwesterner experiences! In fact for the most part I feel sorry for people who succumb to it.
Knowing what you actually want and need makes navigating so much a lot easier.
nothing unnecessary
not just the most effective widget at the best cost but only
a plain white tshirt vs a tshirt that says I identify xyz
consumerism is purchasing to satisfy emotional and social needs - status and pleasure
As I sit here unjamming and defrosting the damn ice maker. Again. Every month.
Though I still use my cheap little Mr. Coffee machine quite happily :)
The key is to shut those fellas off when they're done brewing so the coffee in the carafe doesn't burn. Microwave it later if you've gotta - it'll taste much better!
The drip machine is...umm... not a cheap little Mr. Coffee, but I've been mostly brewing my own coffee for about 30 years now and I've had a few gotta-have-it moments. 😇
