Trump is a man of contrasts. On Thursday he deported 11.3 million people while wearing a Republican red tie, but he signed the order outside under a sky that was Democratic blue, appearing to signal bipartisanship.
I genuinely can't tell if this is better or worse than when they decided that the fate of the world swung on which piece of jewelry Madeleine Albright decided to wear that day.
One would have thought it was more newsworthy that he couldn't stay conscious through the event. Trump is sundowning. How is his tie color the bigger story?
If you Google “Trump blue tie,” there are tons of pictures of him wearing one, including debates and rallies. I don’t think he was honoring Democrats on those occasions.
'the American media’s preoccupation before 1938 with maintaining “balanced” coverage of Nazi Germany resulted in a confusing image of Hitler, particularly in the “sugar-coated” stories that appeared in newspapers and magazines about the private man, a subject that fascinated the American public.'
It includes statements like this 'In 1937, Life featured photographs of Hitler with children, with sentimental captions; the editors admitted the images were propaganda'
The article was written by the Times' chief fashion critic, so anyone expecting trenchant political analysis was likely doomed from the start. https://www.nytimes.com/by/vanessa-friedman
This is her thing. From her profile: "I focus on fashion as an expression of political, social and cultural identity at a specific moment in time, especially how it is used by those in the public eye to communicate values and influence opinion." She's more interesting than, say, Ross Douthat.
I don't understand why people are upset. Vanessa Friedman is just doing her job. She's paid by the Times to write about fashion. She is not a political analyst or political reporter.
I don't always agree with her observations, but fashion is a perfectly valid subject to write about. Seems that some people complaining don't get that.
I agree. I don't agree with her views on what the Trumps wore to the Carter funeral but she's just doing her job. The Times is paying her to give her opinions on fashion. She's not a political reporter/columnist/analyst.
THE PROCEDURE GUYS! HE UPHELD THE PROCEDURE! HE REACHED ACROSS THE ISLE YOU GUYS! PRESIDENTIAL! HE IS PRESIDENTIAL NOW!
the media is complicit and we're all gonna die while some asshole writes about how death camps are a bold new idea that may have an impact on the stock market in the future
"The President-elect, who is an evil, lying, insane piece of shit, made an appearance at Carter's funeral, accompanied by his attractive but gold-digger wife."
I need a pair of glasses which will blank out his entire existence so I can live again. There is no human on this planet I am more repulsed by presently. None. And having him plastered everywhere is a shade of revolting I’ve never experienced worse than the last time he was in office.
It's his voice that is like instant nails on a chalkboard inside my right temple. I stopped watching tv in 2016, with the exception of a few weeks in March 2020 for 🇨🇦 government updates.
It's an instant splitting headache and my stress biomarkers increase dramatically.
I was in Key West the night before the 2016 election. The bar we were in had CNN on, chyrons in all caps, with the volume on repeating soundbites from both Hillary and Trump. My head was ready to explode. All I could think was "Please turn it off, make it stop." After he won, I permanently muted him
That is a powerful tool we have: the ability to mute. Yet, I t’s not enough. That tint, the radioactive glow, the toxicity of his gaze, the impudence by which he operates. It’s absolutely gruesome. I need AI tools to live-remove him from my life!
I stopped watching television in 2002. I moved out of my shared accommodation and struck out on my own. Chose to avoid cable and have lived a commercial free life since. But now the internet is rampant with ads and that 💩 face. I have to hold back the bile. It’s taxing.
“democratic blue tie” as if that meant something. A black tie was appropriate. And Melania with her unwashed, unkempt hair was another example of “IDGAF. Do you?” in an off the rack dated Valentino coat made her look like Wednesday from The Addams Family.
Bet Melania was pissed that Michelle wasn't there. She probably didn't realize that she too could have had another engagement...like stay home and wash her hair or something.
Trump spent the whole time bent over shooting arrows at Kamala
Every one was celebrating Carters life
Bush refused to recognize him
Michelle stayed in Hawaii rather than sitting next to him
Trump would wear a blue tie and think it meant something
everyone there saw through him
The NYT needs to sit down and shut up. Stop whitewashing tRump and his consort. I've already cancelled my NYT subscription, and recommend that everyone do the same.
She looks like a pilgrim in a black bathrobe with morning head. My mom always said that the evil inside would eventually turn up outside and it appears it's happening. I mean look at the Orange One.
Yes, an incredible juvenile description filled with absurd assertions. I’m sure Benedict Donald woke up and said Ill wear a blue tie to show I’m suddenly bipartisan 🤦♀️
Thanks. You’re correct, it does appear to be “a dramatic print of 19th century neoclassical sculpture of lovers sharing an intimate kiss.” To me, it looked like a sand person hugging something. I didn’t post any attention to her at the event. Just saw this photo and wondered.
Seeing what we want to see - “he’s going to lower the price of eggs” “he’s going to keep us out of war” - is exactly how we got here. Thanks @nytimes.com for your collaborative efforts.
Yes!! You know that meme where it’s a lizard sitting in a salon chair saying “have I always been this ugly?” That’s her look right now. Zero effort. It’s kind of disrespectful.
The writers “we don’t want republicans to cancel us, they hurt our feelings when they say mean thing plus trumps shit tastes delicious, sorry not sorry”
Beginning of the handmaid trend in christian (but not Christlike) white nationalism. Nancy R. will bust out of her grave when they claim only they have been approved to wear red.
Just for the record, this was written by Vanessa Friedman. She writes a lot of stuff like this--how fashion choices have such deeper political meaning. It is absolute drivel and they don't allow comments on her articles.
Reminds me of old-timey, small town newspaper wedding articles. "The bride wore a gown of chantilly lace, with fitted bodice and full net skirt, forming a long flowing train, the fitted sleeves tapering to points over her hands. The fingertip veil was of imported illusion and fell from a bonnet..."
"Shit. Now I have to show up for all these freakin' official occasions again when I was really starting to enjoy living away from that smelly gasbag and his idiot friends."
PBS, which I love, was just as bad: "Moments like these bring the country together," they intoned as presidents refused to shake hands, looked the other way, talked through the service, and the VP and First Lady edged away from each other. I'm not sure assigned seating is a great idea these days.
All thing mens clothes. That goes to Derek Guy. If he doesn't write it, it's not worth reading. Speculative nonsense is the pruview of the NY Times. If they write it its not worth reading

Are y’all stoned?
Don’t insult children like that

I do not regret being an ex-Times subscriber.
It's an instant splitting headache and my stress biomarkers increase dramatically.
That voice and those lips… the lips and the hands. 🙌
I need a vacation from it all.

Also what design is on her dress, shirt, etc?
lemme stop you right there, pal. are you sure you want to finish that sentence?
Shameless adult toadies, OTOH…
Melania looked like she just finished mopping the floors & emptying his bedpan
How about going back to Joe Friday: “Just the facts”… that’s what we need.
Because he is despicable.
