This is so wild to me... The traditional definition of "conservative" is to want to keep things as they are, "conserve" them as it were.... But it turns out Rs are radicals that want to change everything, and D's represent status quo? What the fuck happened?
I LOVE candescent bulbs so much. Idc they burn out in a week give me that yellow fucking old book glow the light even smells different. LED can suck it.
Left to their own devices these idiots would have us in Horse and Wagons, trolly cars and outdoor plumbing.
Lightbulbs? Eggs? Pasteurized milk?
These are the most pressing issues in their world?
I'll start by saying I'm very happy with the LED/low energy bulbs I use now. They're way better, than those that first came out. Which took ages to brighten up.
I do want old fashioned bulbs on my christmas tree lights. My now vintage sets, give better coloured light than anyLED set available.
Look for things called "Vintage Filament LED's". As for Christmas Tree lights, I believe @techconnectify.bsky.social had some truly wonderful sets of lights in a recent video they did.
I have longed for the glorious days when you had to change every lightbulb in the house every month instead of once a decade for a 30th of the power consumption
My FIL (a retired IBEW electrician) stockpiled incandescents (along with guns, gold, and pharmaceuticals) ahead of their banning. The man *knows* better.
This is like the stove and solar panel thing, where they are told they can have something that’s cheaper and lasts longer if they want with no other change to their lives and they reject it simply because people they hate prefer it.
Fun fact: Some older cameras took advantage of the non-visible spectrum emitted by incandescent bulbs for indoor filming, meaning that You would need higher power LEDs for filming, despite the incandescent equivalent producing the same amount of light...
The jeep crowd still does this about seat belts. Those people hate my "modern" wrangler and theres threads and threads about how we don't need lane departure etc and should go back to when people died in 25mph crashes and they could fly out the front windshield because they forgot to put it back up
To be fair immigration to the US in the first place selects for it. Whole country of people whose ancestors just said "I absolutely will NOT and I will cross the sea and leave my family to show you fuckers how much I will not"
Sure, bring back the light bulb. Which almost no one uses anymore. Because people aren't satisfied with something that uses less energy, is cheaper over the long term, and won't burn the house down.
They really want higher electric bills & the need to change bulbs frequently? This is just billionaires screwing with people.
I used a ladder to put in that LED bulb around 2004. It was really scary because I was far too high up on a 10 foot ladder. It’s 20 years later, same bulb. LED rocks.
Like they don't realize that "fuck you, if you say it's good then I think it's bad" gives the other person every bit as much power over you as the reverse
I have an extremely niche need: an 80s smart home system that has lamp modules that double as dimmer switches that don't work properly with LED lights.
I mean, there's a modern updated version that does and works with the 80s stuff, but where's the fun in that?
Simultaneously heating and lighting a 6x6x4 well house. That is about it, but there are use cases. On the other end of it, I'd rather have a LED that lasts 10 years in my hallway.
The only semi-valid complaint about energy-efficient bulbs was that you had to wait a minute for them to come up to full power, but that stopped being true about 15 years ago.
Ah a classic 2011 era cultural issue, already solved by every lightbulb manufacturer in the country switching to making high efficiency bulbs. Love these guys being in power. Makes me feel Led
There was a time that I hated LED lights because they were a cold light and too bright but you know what? Advancements!! Cozy warm light if you want AND a lower electric bill.
Yeah, by switching entirely to LED we burn as much electricity with all the house lights turned on as we used to burn with just the kitchen incandescents running... Oh, no, with half the kitchen incandescents burned out 🤣
Mike Lee's message brought to you by your utility company, who'd like the lighting portion of your bill to go up 90% (and in warmer regions, also a modest boost to your a/c demand for a double-win).
Remember when some nincompoops try to make the "feathered dinosaurs" nontroversy a "culture war" thing? I recall some English media writing about the (paraphrasing) "Woke T-Rex".
They are so the cult of stupids. Let's burn way more electricity for the same or less light and excess waste heat. Fits right in with antivax and burning more fossil fuel.
Mike Lee is an attention-seeking under-achieving village idiot of the Senate. Also a stooge of the light-bulb & electric power industries who is now shilling an outdated, underperforming & inefficient product that has a much shorter operating life & costs a lot more money to purchase & operate.
Even then - they specifically want a garbled version of a 1950s cigarette advertisement aesthetic, not the real thing. It’s not like they admire the beat movement and it’s not like they’re willing to wear properly-fitting suits.
So this is an example of the level of discourse from a member of “the world’s greatest deliberative body “?
People really need to break from their tribes and stop voting for these chodes
No, obviously we need to regress technology exactly back to what the politician was familiar with in common use as a kid. BUT NO FURTHER! By curious luck, the politician was born at the exact one moment in history when technology was correct. Anything older would be silly.
replaying michele bachmann's hits of 2011-12.
the lightning freedom act, meant to pwn obama for being a nambypamby environmentalist whacko after compelling compact fluorescent bulbs on americans... as condition of a bill signed into kaw by bush-43.
You know, if we'd just embrace clean energy then we wouldn't have to worry about the efficiency of LEDs and could bring them back without barbecuing the entire planet.
Who wouldn't want light bulbs that are extremely fragile, get hot and can start fires, waste a fuck ton of energy and burn out quickly rather than cool, energy efficient ones?
Is he talking about incandescents? The fire hazard bulbs that are fragile and use more energy? I haven’t had to replace a lightbulb in like 8 years, why would I want to do that again?
It's not like you can't buy incandescent bulbs. I bought some from Home Depot not that long ago, looking for a specific kind of light for a project. Are they just mad that they're not the default anymore? It makes no sense, but then again nothing MAGA says makes sense
Nothing MAGA says makes sense because they're all trying to dance around the fact that they're angry they can't say the N word at black people in public anymore without saying it out loud
Oh definitely…! Right after we bring back the horse and buggy, hand-washing laundry and cocaine-laced soda. Perfect for the party that wants to take us back to the 1800’s…
There’s one exception, my spouse gets migraines with the flicker rate of most LEDs that wasn’t there with incandescent. I really wish there had been more extensive research on how to support migraine sufferers because once we run out we’re gonna have to use candlelight or something
Who says that the GOP isn’t a coalition government? You’ve got:
- the oppositional defiants
- the “I’m not bigoted, I just don’t think those that don’t look, act, or think like me deserve to be treated like people”
- Christian Nationalists
- uber wealthy societal leaches
I work as an interventionist, clients with ODD & various conduct disorders. Executive function inhibition happens in situations of perceived obligation- vaccine mandates, common good ethics etc. Managing disappointment/accepting no are lagging skills. Cooperation is genuinely difficult for them.
Reminds me of the Stanhope bit, where if you are too stupid to get around a law, you are exactly kind the person the law was written for. If you NEED an incandescent light, you'll figure it out.
The super harsh light from LEDs sucks (aesthetically unpleasing and an absolute disaster in terms of headlights), but that's an easily solved problem that doesn't require bringing back massively inefficient bulbs.
Tungsten incandescent bulbs were victims of planned obsolescence. If the filament were a little thicker they would last a decade without creating harmful e-waste or neurotoxic waste as in LED and halogen bulbs.
The quoted poster here doesn't know or want that, of course.
The light bulb thing was signed into law by George W. Bush but phased in over time, so it quickly became an insane Tea Party anti-Obama talking point and has been a dumbass far-right calling card ever since
I really think Dump got a lot of voters that simply don’t like being told what to do, even if what they do is bad. They know it’s bad, but the being told what to do is worse than doing something they know is stupid.
You know, the lightbulb in my basement burned out just yesterday, and I specifically remember thinking, “I really wish I had to stand here in the dark for 15 minutes waiting for this bulb to cool down before I can change it.”
We used to make incandescent bulbs that lasted lifetimes but lightbulb companies realised that if they made them burn out faster people would buy more of them.
Theres one in a califonia firestation thats remained alight since 1903 and still burning right now
The other reply has an excellent video breaking it down. Essentially, incandescents have to make a tradeoff between energy efficiency, lifespan, and light. You can make it last forever and be fairly cheap, but it'll be dimmer than starlight.
This video makes a pretty good case that the reason incandescent lightbulbs had the lifetime they did was for brightness and efficiency reasons, not to sell more lightbulbs (and the "centennial bulb" is as dim as a nightlight) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb7Bs98KmnY
It's fun to have your bulb burn out suddenly and unexpectedly 1 or 2 times a year rather than lasting 5 years or so.
The good times are comin' BACK, baby.
That's at a minimum in high use (or the occasional dud). I had one early CFL from the 90s last a decade, ~6hr nightly on a timer. That one didn't have fab color render, but so what.
A lot of them are rated to last 7 years, and if the brightness reduces by more than 30% it's considered to a failed. One of the major failure modes is the individual diodes on the LED chip burning out one by one. The other one, the only one that I seem to experience, is the inverter failing
At my last apartment I had LEDs and I only had one burnout in the bathroom, I'm assuming that one was just effective from the factory. I replaced it and never thought about it again.
At my current apartment the only LED bulbs I've had fail we're in the ceiling mounted boob light where there was two of them in one fixture causing overheating. The nicer LED bulbs have thermal regulation circuitry to help prevent this
I saw something recently, too, about how LED bulbs can be heat sensitive, so cheaper bulbs will fail even faster if they're in a fully enclosed light fixture like most homes built since the 80s-90s have in their ceilings.
I once bought a house from an antique enthusiast, lots of unique fixtures. Required an arsenal of every type of incandescent bulb known to man to keep that place lit

Lightbulbs? Eggs? Pasteurized milk?

Mike can replace his bulbs every few weeks and pay higher electric bills while my lights automatically tune their color according to my current mood.
I do want old fashioned bulbs on my christmas tree lights. My now vintage sets, give better coloured light than anyLED set available.
Not something I've seen here in the UK yet. So I'll see what I can find online.
FTFY!
The entirety of the problem with LED headlights is the headlight casing not being designed for them.
Headlight casings work to reflect light in specific ways and rely on the light source itself being in a specific spot and shape.
People still make incandescent headlights, so the fixtures are made for them, meaning people make those headlights.
Without an external force to *make* the change happen, it's not gonna happen.
We were right, the Europeans were wrong!

make the gop normal(ish) again.
We'll wait.
I used a ladder to put in that LED bulb around 2004. It was really scary because I was far too high up on a 10 foot ladder. It’s 20 years later, same bulb. LED rocks.
Modern Easy Bake Ovens use a heating element now.
Conservatives are whining because things are new.
Actual protestors are protesting over actually bad things. Not just because things are new.
Think of the displaced peat bog cutters! Losing their organic energy source to whale oil.
The world will never recover from this economic displacing of those workers.
Oh woe is us!
Nothing
I mean, there's a modern updated version that does and works with the 80s stuff, but where's the fun in that?
But the new LED bulbs are superior in every way.
It's too late to get a "real congress" in 2025 but we can get one in 2027.
And in 2023, Biden banned incandescent light bulbs COMPLETELY.
https://inside.lighting/news/23-08/politicisation-incandescent-light-bulb-ban
Do I have to buy leaded paint again? New abestos lined toasters for extra fire retardant capability?
Hey! Let’s switch back to unshielded aluminum wire in houses for funsies 😈
Yeah, the CFL bulbs sucked (and never lasted as long as they claimed) but I haven't seen one of those in ages.
I didn't know there was a term for it.
Like, they're literally on Amazon or at Lowe's and Home Depot for, like, $5-6 a box
and no brown people living down the block
People really need to break from their tribes and stop voting for these chodes
his dad worked in reagan's commerce dept. he's just another nepobaby.
What would YOU like to bring back, America?
the lightning freedom act, meant to pwn obama for being a nambypamby environmentalist whacko after compelling compact fluorescent bulbs on americans... as condition of a bill signed into kaw by bush-43.
Fucking get over yourselves.
You buy a 2700K light temperature blub.
Which is what the incandescent were.
Like if this fucker could figure how to Tweet, he can figure how to buy an LED light bulb.
The incandescent bulb sucked.
It draws stupid amounts of power, gives off shit loads of heat, and doesn't last that long.
There are few applications where the incandescent is superior.
I'm fucking sick and tired of people acting like the LED bulbs are the worst fucking thing in the world.
Go to a hardware store and ask someone to help you.
Be a fucking adult. Ask for help.
They pay us to stand there and walk you through the light blubs.
Who wants to increase their power bill significantly?
🤣😅🤷

ALL!
Why would I regress? I want peak efficiency!
Ten years ago, I had fluorescent recessed lights and we were constantly replacing them.
They just want brownouts(at best) and stupidly high energy prices all the time.
Can't imagine that'd hurt the GOP
- the oppositional defiants
- the “I’m not bigoted, I just don’t think those that don’t look, act, or think like me deserve to be treated like people”
- Christian Nationalists
- uber wealthy societal leaches
They work 100% fine IF you have the right fixture.
Has to do with how they reflect the light to focus it.
Wanting to live in an Amish paradise
And they all need a time out
As heaters
90% of energy converted into heat and only 10% wasted as light
Mike Lee... mmmm... Lee. Must be Chinese...
Must be selling out our country to China... we should investigate him.
The quoted poster here doesn't know or want that, of course.
LEDs are just strictly superior
They literally cost less for everyone AND save energy.

(I don't even remember how long incandescent bulbs used to last *because I never have to think about light bulbs anymore*.)
Incandescent light bulbs that last forever are extremely dim to the point of near worthlessness.
The good times are comin' BACK, baby.
Cold. Dead. Hands. 😾
So this is Mike Lee's bright idea. What a dimwit!
