Saw a Cowboy Bebop concert tonight and it was a 15-piece band but in the middle of the show they let the sax player solo for like 12 minutes and it was the sickest thing I've ever seen

I am a conductor, and having spoken to many people over the years, I've found some respect the job and some don't - but almost none of them actually know what "the guy with the stick" does.
Rock music usually just goes. A concert band playing a Sousa march doesn't really need a conductor either. But most large group works have a lot of entrances, exits, and tempo changes that need everyone on the same page for.
I mean I've learned we don't *need* one, there have been times the conductor leaves to do something and we play just fine, but it helps to have someone cuing all (depending on the size of the ensemble) 30-50 people, long rests can get hard to count and that many people are just hard to coordinate
Also depending on the size of the pit, you can’t rely on your ears to stay in time with everyone, right? One of those weird times when the speed of sound isn’t fast enough
Small groups don't because organizing them isn't difficult.
On stage, players in a large group can't hear everyone else, so they need a steady beat as a guide. Classical music also uses far more tempo changes and complex meters, and things can go off the rails rapidly.
But the bulk of a the job is pre-performance: in an orchestra of 50 opinionated and occasionally egotistical members, someone has to lead rehearsals, decide on interpretations (a lot of classical music isn't written on the page and different ideas abound), etc. Basically, provide the vision.
I like all kinds of music from classical to heavy metal but I've never seen anything that can directly connect with the human psyche like this. Watch Heilung live at Red rocks. It's time for Democrats to summon their inner Viking. https://youtu.be/0G5Dj-xMpb8?si=4Luik_ubqFQtThej
Yes, it’s true. That cowboy bebop is a TV show. However, it’s a TV show with one of the sickest soundtracks ever made. You can go on YouTube and watch, jazz musicians and other singers, etc. have their minds blown when they’re exposed to the badassery of that soundtrack
I was listening to Little Jimmy Dickens sing a favorite of mine from 60 years ago.
“May the bird of Paradise fly up your nose . . “
Enjoy 👍🏾 Western swing, definitely not country! Wikipedia don’t know shttt!
I was looking for this answer to my questions.
I am continually amazed that people don't know who The Seatbelts are. They're amazing.
Not sure I would be happy with a cover band.
12 minutes solo of anything would have me heading to the door! 😂 🎸 🥁 I’m sure it was fun to see the skilled player though, glad music is alive and well. Glad you had fun
My partner and I went to one of these shows. It was such a rad time. We seemed to be assigned seats in the weird white weebs with hot, biracial girlfriends section of the theatre, lol. They were decent seats, though, & probably just a coincidence
He is actually still very popular. I know about him from the intro to The Lost boys movie. And in more recent years the England based band Gunship has used him on a few tracks.
I am personally very excited to see him referenced anywhere for his incredible talent.
Is it this ensemble? IIRC they played Underground Arts in Philadelphia PA not too long ago, and tix sold out almost as quickly as they went on sale 🤯 https://www.cowboybeboplive.com
I've been wanting to see Yoko Kanno in concert for literally decades. I'm so glad you got to see her group perform. Yoko Kanno is one of the greatest musicians of her generation.
I would do very bad things to go to a Cowboy Bebop concert but live in upside down land where such things are underappreciated. My jealousy is overwhelming.
I'm jealous. That sounds like it must've been awesome!
I'm currently not much of a music person in that I can barely handle it with my seemingly constant migraine... But when I can, I listen to The Real Folk Blues somewhat often. The entire Bebop OST was amazing, though. <3

Bebop is a masterpiece, it checks every nerd box for me.
Was it Yoko Kanno or a tribute?

(Not cowboy bepop, just a killer sax solo)

similar to 12 minutes
or
just 12 minutes
12 minutes is too long for a sax solo

Muscle Shoals Blues Section
Duke Ellington
Not sure if this is the one OP went to, but I was actually hoping to go see this orchestra performance as well!
It fills my heart with joy to know the love for Cowboy Beepop is still going strong.
