A lot of our troubles would not exist if Google had charged a minimal fee from the beginning - that reduces the influence of advertising as their profit motive
"Oh, Google can do that! Just hit the web option! Each and every time, after a section of Amazon forest has been killed to run your search through an AI engine! It's not as good as 'old google'!"
Or, I guess add ?udm=14 to the google query string on browsers that allow it, which my Firefox doesn't.
I wonder how long until 'just google it' or 'I'll just google' or similar is out of our vernacular. Or it sticks around and 20 years from now everyone's like 'where did that phrase come from?'
Peak google was so good at having the right answers right up front because search worked. Now they try to give us the answers and we get Elmer’s glue added to frozen pizza.
I got annoyed enough today that I broke down and figured out how to add the udm 14 string and replace it as default search in both firefox and chrome on my work laptop, home pc, and phone today. It's kind of a pain in the ass and I'm probably using some words wrong but the udm 14 thing is way better
i had that old sphider code run on a pentium 3 for a person search engine and boy you'd be shocked what kinda data they collect
eye opening what google and others keep from us all
Non ironically, the majority of Gen-Zs uses TikTok to search any subject.
And I can't even blame them, the app is just so much better for it that google or bing.
The ability to fact-check the info you got is key.
But my point is that with search engines becoming AIs that can just vomit any made up answer, and sometimes not even related to the subject, GenZs rather uses one with unchecked answer than use the AI vomit.
And for that, I cant blame them
greetings from the future, all search engines were banned during the “Great Web Reconstruction” of 2034, the largest digital public works project in history. now in order to find websites you must know the exact address, which cuts down on unnecessary server hosting, but is very inconvenient

Their iOSapp no longer remembers settings for more than a few days and keeps reverting AI and safe search to back on.
