“Wicked” and “Gladiator 2” are both now streaming. 4 weeks after release. $40-$60 for three people to see a film vs $20 at home. Almost no incentive to go to the theater anymore.
Got to go back to 6-9 months between the big screen and small.

Also, it was damned fun when we all had the group experience of Capt. America wielding Mjolnir.
People that like big picture and sound and communal experience go to theaters. Despite being somewhat down, theaters still pulled nearly $9B in 2024.
…and the sound quality was so good it broke me out of my film reverie so I could listen to the mastering.
How does me being able to watch it at home sooner impact your ability to go see it in theaters at all?
And it's a feedback cycle. Regardless of which came first, movies coming faster to streaming causes some people to skip theatre (Has happened to me, for example), and vice versa.
I think cinema is fine.
Theaters aren't viable for lots of people, why make them wait?
However.. no mobile phones going off.. No popcorn munching from other people, no chatting from other people.. kids crying, etc, etc, etc..
Pause feature, incredibly useful... Though on the flipside.. sometimes my ADD can kick in, get distracted. Sit back in front of TV a little later.. oh yeh I was watching a film.. bugger need to rewind a bit for a recap..
I forgot something else - at home I get SUBTITLES. That's v. important for me.
Not quite as a big TV, but Sony of course for the 4k TV... OLED.. Sonos for Dolby Atmos and surround sound..
Cinemas are a damned hellscape.
My argument is the cinema experience we get sold is completely overpriced and overrated. The Vue I went to a while ago, the seats were also incredibly uncomfortable.
The comfort of your own home is far better..
Using a 2 for £10 offer.
Though to pay 30 to 40 quid for the upgraded IMAX experience is just a massive rip off, imho..
I'm gonna go watch #Se7en in #IMAX tho. 👍
They need to do the same thing with studios and streaming services.
I'm waiting for a class action from theaters.
Case in point:
1st Man: *texting*
2nd Man: "Stop texting!"
1st Man: *throws popcorn*
2nd Man: *shoots 1st Man*
1st Man: *dies*
2nd Man: *found not guilty*

[insert confused emotions here] 🤣🖤😥🤦♂️
"I'll watch it when it's free even if I have to wait 5 years; there's plenty of other free stuff to watch in the meantime"
-- category.
Spoiler alerts don't bother me. In 5 years, I'll probably have forgotten them anyway.
🏠🍿🎟☺️
Is it worth paying 2 or 3 times the price?
That's your call.
Denis Villeneuve's Dune films were great, but that's still... 1 in 20 for Hollywood?
Or am I being too optimistic about Hollywood and movie quality?
Of the good things my theatre offered me this year there was also MaXXXine, Boy Kills World, Monkey Man, Cuckoo, Sonic 3 was pretty decent, Furiosa was fun, The Substance...
I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting but moral is there's good flicks out there if you look around
Might watch Wicked at home—wouldn’t drive to see it.
I would gladly wait longer to see movies at home, but I'd rather not.
Same if it's too loud. Shouldn't be.
In UK you can spend £15 on the ticket but if you have a drink and some nachos and popcorn, you're looking at £35.
It's simple.
Stop. Ripping. The. Public. Off!
You want people in theatres, make it cost effective and simple to go.
Otherwise, it's nachos on my couch.
It’s important to get some context behind how theaters actually make money.
Theaters pay studios to be able to screen the films. Typically losing money on the screening.
They’re making money on the food which is why food costs are so high.
Here in Scotland, for around £19 a month, you get unlimited visits, our local Odeon is all recliner seating too.
I would go see old flicks in theaters if they weren’t charging the same (sometimes more) as new movie tickets.
That’s an even better deal for multiple viewings
Plus our local theater has been going downhill. The HVAC is often broken, they don't clean enough, etc.
Everytime i sit on my couch in front of my decent TV, i get a consistent experience. Im not gonna blow $60 on the "magic" of the theater.
Perhaps the only good thing to come out of covid was same day streaming availability.
Went to a theater Tuesday (A COMPLETE UNKNOWN) for the first time since 2019 and was reminded even a great movie is a hellish experience in a theater
But to *me* the streaming experience is just soooo much more desirable
But when many people know it'll be streaming shortly, they won't feel the pressure to see it in the theaters. IMHO. Many films I just wait.
In the Dylan movie Tuesday we *constantly* heard what I think was lion roars from the new Lion King....
It's nonsense.
You want a bigger picture on your retina?
Sit closer to your TV.
With the TV resolution on today it'll be just fine.
Hellfire, VR headsets take up more of your retina than even the big screen, and their screens are 3-7 inches.
Remember when we could illegally download all that for free? Im still doing it and boi, it feels soo good
Not all of us have healthy immune systems to be out in a maskless public, and we shouldn't be punished for that.
Also, I don’t get concessions. Ever. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
YMMV
You can make food at home no?
Movie theaters rock 🤘🏼
Today, you can see one movie for $20. With expensive, bad popcorn, the noise level is so loud that the fillings in my mouth fall out.
Movie theaters have a much bigger issue than just streaming services. I'd rather their current rendition die out.
It's almost a chicken and egg situation because these venues need funding to improve quality of life..
But I would rather have current movie theaters die out to potentially lead to smaller, more intimate and hand-crafted venues.
I think something that's more of a fine dining restaurant type of vibe. Low lit, quality over quantity (including concessions).
Pretty much make it a premium experience that isn't outclassed by staying home.
It's actually insane to me that I'd have to pay that much for one of the most uncomfortable ways to ever watch a movie.
I assume Netflix, or Amazon Prime Video? Maybe @filmandseries.bsky.social? 🤩
Much prefer watching movies at home. long waiting times between cinema & home release encouraged piracy. Which is A Bad. Right?
(saw #wicked at t’cinema & loved it, but I don’t see a need to be snobby about it)
There’ll also be less cinemas around and more movies will go straight to streaming.
That seems worse than the theater experience for the same price without ownership.
Nintendo stopped lowering MSRPs during COVID and so did most everyone else on the console market.
TERR

BULL
then the, what zombie monkey's?
fucking nonsense.
i shut it off then
Any movie I don’t want to see in theaters I wait until it’s somewhere accessible. Stay in your budget
My wife can’t get out to see many films for health reasons.
The theater experience is fine for me maybe once or twice a year, regardless of price. Nothing beats free + at home.
it bothers me a lot more when summer movies only get 2 or 3 weeks instead of hanging around
Last time we went to a theatre for a blockbuster there were only 4 other people there.
