Honestly this so insidious and hypocritical. Everyone shits and pees and it comes from the same place. I mean; maybe the holes look different but I wouldn’t know because it’s not my business!
Maybe we could stop victim blaming the first trans congresswoman? She’s in an incredibly dangerous place right now and she’s trying to pass legislation. If the GOP successfully makes her entire tenure about her bathroom access then she can’t be re-elected and she can’t do anything useful.
We need a real national response or demonstration like yesterday. We need a national organization with cis-women like yesterday. First priorities should be to pressure blue states to protect birth control and hrt. Bodily autonomy is the beginning of freedom. I'm in SD with ideas if anybody wants org
I was hoping I'd be informed about a secret 12th dimensional plan for her to stick it to the maga but yes, the most obvious answer is often the right one.
Malicious compliance in this scenario would be demanding birth certificates and DNA testing from *everyone* anytime they try to enter a public bathroom for either gender on Capitol hill and making it impossible for anyone to use them as a result.
Malicious compliance is just anytime someone complies completely knowing there will be unintended consequences as a result of the demand for compliance. Not a member of the community so not my place to defend or criticize. Was just an observation.
She could make sure that every time she goes into a restroom, it’s at the same time as a Republican man so they can be constantly reminded of how fucking stupid this is.
She hasn't done anything yet, but she could easily just start being extremely obnoxious about the rule, making republicans seem like they're obsessed over that instead of doing the things they promised. If she wants to protest the rule, she still can. And she can still make it protestable for others
yes, but my point was maybe her response is sort of: "okay, you asked for it, hope all you men enjoy sharing a bathroom with a woman" because I think we all know the biggest snowflakes on Capitol Hill are the Republican men.
I was saying she should follow Mike Johnson into the restroom and chat him up every single time. Sit in the stall next to his, stand next to him at the urinal, make his life as uncomfortable until he changes the rule.
Also don't actually use the bathroom but rather use one nearby if possible.
I mean I'm not a member of the trans community so it's not my place to really judge how it might impact that community or what someone who is a member of the community might feel about her choice to comply.
It’s possible that if there’s video of her going into the men’s room, or stories about men being creepy about it, it might cause a bigger public backlash against these anti-trans policies, without jeopardizing her ability to serve her constituents.
Her capitulation amounted to the first death blow to what will become the swift removal of all our basic human rights and liberties afforded to all Americans. Good going, Sarah.
i visited home (florida) for the first time since i transitioned and the first thing i did after the plane landed was pee in the airport's women's room
I wish McBride would bring a trans man to work, have them follow Mace into the bathroom and when she freaks out, show her that it's really a woman using the bathroom. Just like she wanted.
I had just finished reading her autobiography when Biden put out the Title IX stuff that didn’t help the trans community at all. All the trans legislators other than 2 signed a letter calling the administration out for it. She was one of the two and I lost so much respect for her.
Honestly i don't think she's forgotten, is the disappointing lack of support from the centrist ( read: right wing in the rest of the world) democrats that forced her hand on this. Unfortunately this decision will now be the cudgel all trans people will be beaten with from this point forward...
Seems like kind of a no-win scenario for her on this one.
Shouldn’t we direct our ire at Nancy Mace and Mike Johnson here?
People are coming down hard on her over this and giving GOP a pass because it’s just built in that they’re awful but she’s also a victim of their transphobia.
I personally would not presume to judge her in this situation. I understand trans people may well be justifiably upset by her compliance, all I would say is maybe reserve judgement for the moment. She's clearly in a difficult position, and maybe didn't want to risk "dying" on this first hill.
Today when I was watching Emma Vigeland defending Trans rights on Piers Morgan, it dawned on me suddenly how important it is for trans people to access gender appropriate washrooms.
They're upset because they want you to use their bathroom with them. if the republicans insurrection for you lasts longer than 4 hours, contact a doctor please.
Speaking of assumptions, maybe she can't protect her own rights. Maybe she's taking a personal L so that she doesn't get censured into oblivion, fired, or again, physically harmed.
Why does everyone immediately assume that she's given up on trans rights completely? The letter seemed more about her.
Probably because at the slightest pushback she gave up? It's only going to get worse from here on out and she just signaled that trans rights are a distraction not worth fighting for. It's on her to earn back the faith she torched. I'm not holding my breath.
Ok, but understand that civil disobedience risks her her position as the only trans woman in Congress, her own personal safety, her optics as a normal woman in Congress who happens to be trans, and a lot of other things we can't predict.
This is not an easy moral decision, there are too many unknowns. And I think both decisions have potential to work out, depending on how she acts once they inevitably escalate.
It's a canard.
The GOP is protecting a guy that allegedly (CYA) slept with a 17 year old and paid for sec, all with a ton of drugs involved.
Make them wear Gaetz every single hour of the day. Don't chase faux scandals.
Comply and use unisex bathrooms or don't comply, get expelled by deranged republicans, and lose the only trans rep on capitol hill? Hmm, maybe we don't throw her under the bus on this one.
Sarah McBride is a gorgeous, binary trans woman. I honestly don't understand why she just doesn't hold a press conference and say, "look at me, what bathroom do you think I belong in?" It would be such a powerful statement to shatter a million misconceptions about us.
It shouldn’t all be on Sarah. The rest of the Democratic Party should ignore these regulations as nonsensical until they are adjusted to appropriately include trans people. Democratic women in Congress should use the men’s room, and Democratic men should use the women’s room.
With all due respect, blaming a Trans person for following the rules, so she can can actually legislate, have a say and be on the floor and do her job, and be in position to fight for Trans right, rather than been banned from speaking, Denial of Privileges. If you can't see why this is bad idea....
She might just be trying to get her footing. Hopefully she is able to catch her self sooner rather then later. Because if you give a inch they WILL run with it.
I do think the strategy of 'I'm focused on my job while y'all are focused on my piss and that's weird' is a good one. Helps emphasize how odd it is that Republicans are obsessed
I understand the disappointment, but I don't understand the victim-blaming. MTG physically threatened McBride with a "physical altercation" if she finds her in the women's room. Some of McBride's future colleagues are openly comments about her genitals. This is gross harassment.
Idk Erin I feel like there might be a lot of armchair quarterbacking going on. She is in a very vulnerable position in a very hostile place and I think she is being shrewd by choosing not to engage w obvious rage bait.
I really want this ridiculous issue to follow a logical conclusion: those prevented from using the bathroom of their choice need to force the issue. Who gets to be the genitalia inspector? And what are the legal repercussions for the idiot who wants that job?
She still does… But if she starts to break the rules of the house they will toss her out or otherwise prevent her from having an impact… I totally understand and agree with her decision here.
Maybe she’s scared because of the current political climate. I don’t think it should be her job to risk her safety when against these very powerful people, where are her colleagues?
I do think it should be her job to be brave. She was elected to fight for the people. She’s supposed to be a human rights activist. She shouldn’t just capitulate and back down when times get tough.
Why is all the focus only on her??? The people with the most to lose (including their lives) should not be singled out to be the brave ones. She has hundreds of democratic colleagues. I just don’t think it’s fair.
I’m not singling her out. The entire Democratic Party is to blame for all of this. Trump won because the democrats were weak, spineless and conciliatory across the board.
They let the right walk all over them and control the narrative, and then the dems joined in with the anti LGBTQ+ and anti immigrant rhetoric in an utterly pathetic attempt to outflank the republicans from the right.
Every atrocity that the republicans are about to commit is the fault of the Democratic Party.
It was supposed to be their job to stand up and fight for us, to protect us from the fascists taking over our government.
It’s easy to say what you would do when you’re the one behind a phone and not staring down a powerful and empowered maga caucus who will have every branch of the federal government on their side and represent constituents who would cheer your death
great point. we should leave resisting this dehumanization to people with more power than the sitting Congresswoman, like all the trans staffers and interns in DC who have much more power and authority to resist this. or better yet, everyone should comply
The obligation for fighting for equality does not rest solely on the people facing inequality, harassment, and violence. I believe it is the responsibility of her colleagues to stand up in support of her and fight with her. I wasn’t clear enough in my OP.
She implied I'm only able to appear bold because I'm just posting on my phone, but I actually have a long history of being bold right in my oppressor's faces. That's what's contrary.
It shouldn’t be the job of lord knows how many trans people with far less power to stand against bigots in the general public either simply because elected politicians refuse to take a stand against this shit
It should be the job of her colleagues to stand with her in support. I don’t think it’s fair to put all the pressure and danger on the person who faces the potential violent retaliation.
Except the person in question is an elected politician and one of the things expected of her party is to OPPOSE fash bullshit, not roll over for it. Doesn’t really matter what idpol boxes said elected politician checks off
She’s not the only person in question who is an elected politician voted in by constituents who want to oppose the GOP and all it now stands for. But she is the one that is a direct target of harassment and she’s the one catching all the slack. It’s not right.
Neat. This does not change the fact she’s actively telling people to let fascists enact whatever bigotry they want because it’s “a distraction”. Given you clearly do not have an issue with that message and just want to whine about how “unfair” anyone/everyone who
40% of republican ads were anti-trans hysteria. Is the progressive cause this lost? Are your feelings real? World is literally burning and your kids will inherit ashes. Real talk.
It’s a shame that for days her party sat by and did nothing leaving her to have to “do it herself” in their words. I’m impressed she could write her statement with all their knives in her back.
My thought is that the GOP knows what they’re doing. Before we can try and shame them, we need to shame the congressional Dems into not folding like a greeting card.
I'm not sure what else congressional dems could do here. Literally just use the bathrooms as normal? I doubt the magas on the hill are going to be paying attention in a week. Even if they are, what are they gonna do? Make a big stink that they caught her in the "wrong" bathroom?
I'm a 57 year old Canadian - never in my life did I give a damn who used what bathroom. As an adult I have seen each sex in each bathroom - what is the fear - we all pee and shit that's it - oh and check ourselves out. This is a diversion - stop this shit and let people shit where they want
She's a politician. She's looked at the options she has and chosen the least bad one. I don't know how the situation will develop, and I don't know what she'll choose to do next, but she's keeping her options open. Meanwhile she's not giving the GOP any text or sound bites they can use against her.
Instead of tearing down our sister can we give her the moral courage to stand up?Remind her (and others) of her strength and accomplishments? And how we are behind her? Don’t we want our sister to have a seat at the table? “The antidote to hate is care.” -Saidiya Hartman
She should just use the bathroom she chooses & if Mike Johnson wants to do something about it she can just snap the cap off the toadstool he stands on to reach his speaker’s chair. That’ll show him. 😂
I think this is a 5d chess play, congress has shady bathroom deals, and they most certainly do not take place in the women's bathroom. Sarah now has unique permission to break the glass urinal ceiling
Stop the hate, she hasn’t even been sworn in yet. You think maybe she’s just lying that she will comply? Maybe she’s planning on suing, or other plans.
She's in a challenging position as a brand-new representative. I hope the Democrats take on the outrageous bullying she's experiencing and get this nonsense put in the trash where it belongs.
Yes, she is under explicit and direct attack, and instead of engaging she's surrendering immediately. And her surrender will cost people she represents dearly.
You can always say that. "Oh well can't do anything about that." "Oh well." "Can't change it. Move on." Then the next thing they do will also be as though an act of nature, immovable, and each time everyone "moves on" it becomes that little bit easier to do more like it.
I see the strategy, but it could go either way. IF the lack of fight leaves the GOP feeling empowered, they will likely push harder for more federal restrictions. where do we draw the line
How about instead of trashing on Sarah Mcbride yall use this energy to ridicule Republicans for being obsessed with identity politics and creating an issue where there was none? The people responsible for this transphobia, they are insane weirdos that need to learn to mind their own business.
Sometimes the point of compliance is to show the people that are trying to enforce this how shameful and petty and unreal it is to do it. She is being patient and letting them make fools of themselves. This is a fake issue and they have brought attention to it in a real way.
any man who goes to a bar has had women walk in to use the free stall when the ladies restroom was backed up. Its never been an issue until now. Women freely walk in while Im at the urinal. Its never been a big deal to me and never will be.
so like... do we get mad about this or is she playing the long game? I genuinely don't know how to feel about her response because I cannot tell if there's some sort of chess being played here.
It was the right decision, politically speaking. She defused the Republican stink bomb and sent a clear message to her contituents. The Rep transphobes may celebrate a small, soon-to-bee-forgotten victory, but McBride has made it clear she's no game for that kind of foolish shit.
Getting banned from bathrooms isn't small and our rights and dignity are not comparable to a stink bomb. Just say you agree with the GOP and oppose trans people existing
This is supposed to be a civil place. You are welcome to disagree with me, but that gives you no right to insult me. By the by, "either with me or against me" is not a good way to analyze reality.
The bathroom bills are one of the ACLU’s biggest priorities when it comes to combating transphobia right now. This is an attempt to make it so we are more and more ashamed to be out in public. If you care about trans folks at all, this should make you mad. If it isn’t, you aren’t an ally.
It dors make me mad, but I think Ms. McBride did the right thing in refusing to be dragged into the Republican provocation. Not every hill is worth dying on, and a clever politician should choose her battles.
This is an awful place to refuse to fight. Its the FIRST provocation from the Republicans. This tells them she will simply roll over when harsher treatment comes her, and by extension our, way. She’s allowed Republicans to feel free to challenge our rights.
Can you point to where did I write I oppose your right to exist? I am a trans woman myself. I suggest you try better to separate what's in the text from what's in your head.
I have reported and blocked about 100 on this thread alone. I think there needs to be a mechanism for putting together a communal blocklist *and* getting Erin to subscribe to it so that anyone on said list who tries to post to her threads is auto blocked. Not sure how to get her to buy in on this
The worst part about this election is neither party gives a shit. Democrats are resigned to being a minority party in a dictatorship and they're just going to let it happen. Even people we thought would fight are turning out to be fucking cowards. It's just fucking sad.
All of the women’s bathrooms have doors on the stalls. If one of the female congresswomen take their young son into the women’s room to pee, they need to be arrested. Rules are rules.
It says to me shes in the pocket of donor's that are not allowing her, aka she sold her soul to get the gig! Aka she now a classic corrupt politician like most of them!
Comments
This is why black people are done with you all.
I doubt that's the plan.
They don't want t be consistent, they want to hurt trans people.
Also don't actually use the bathroom but rather use one nearby if possible.
Maybe this is a naive hope, but it’s what I have.
They make cute art and are on BlueSky. Just thought it was funny to respond with that shirt.
Not my design.
Shouldn’t we direct our ire at Nancy Mace and Mike Johnson here?
People are coming down hard on her over this and giving GOP a pass because it’s just built in that they’re awful but she’s also a victim of their transphobia.
Word.
Straighten the crown before you kick her in the face.
Also, she straight up said that she doesn't agree with the decision and will keep fighting for other issues which I assume includes trans rights.
She isn't willing to protect her own rights after her party signals they won't support her. Why would you think she'd defend the rights of others?
Why does everyone immediately assume that she's given up on trans rights completely? The letter seemed more about her.
🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️
So it's assumptions galore today, then?
We as Americans can fight on her behalf as she is fighting for trans people.
The GOP is protecting a guy that allegedly (CYA) slept with a 17 year old and paid for sec, all with a ton of drugs involved.
Make them wear Gaetz every single hour of the day. Don't chase faux scandals.
ATTACK THE OTHER FUCKS!
The men's restroom is where I feel most comfortable in. I've been on T and pass even while wearing makeup.
It would be very uncomfortable to use the women's restroom.
It was supposed to be their job to stand up and fight for us, to protect us from the fascists taking over our government.
I wonder which people have more to be afraid of
We’ll see if they even seat her. I imagine they’ll cook up something about a dress code or running under an assumed identity.
The hundreds of people who work in Congress, however, will be affected.
It doesn't work in any context
Ilhan Omar never did. Why should she?
does the raping not a transgender person!
Exhibit A⬇️
I suspect she’s made a calculation that she’s not yet in a position to take this issue on.
