Just read this whole thread and no one mentioned it so belatedly feel I have to mention that growing up we had toasted crumpets topped with butter, strawberry jam and slices of cheddar cheese — at the same time. So there’s this option too.
they have their own special texture, for sure. Different from bread, different from English muffins, different from pancakes. they're sort of all of those, but none of them.
Having tried both they’re completely different! A crumpet is a lot springier and it has more structure, the holes are all vertical and fairly big. An “English muffin” is fundamentally similar to bread
Not putting the bread between 2 pieces of toast is an intentional choice to make it worse that only one country could make.
It doesn’t cost anything to toast the bread, quit being so stingy.
I object! American muffins are cupcake-adjacent but there is a much wider range of grains and textures allowed. You can't make a bran cupcake, but you can make a bran muffin.
They're more like a cross between a cupcake and a sweet bread a la banana bread. (Not to be confused with sweetbread.)
In my experience, most of what we'd call English muffins has the more open texture like you'd call crumpets. Seems not very common for them to be very close-textured like the ones pictured.
Mmmm. Love me a crumpet. It's been years since I had one. There used to be a place nearby (Carmel, CA) that made fresh crumpets, but they went out of business.
As an English chap, just like to say that a crumpet is definitely not an English muffin.
Have them toasted with lots of butter. Butter not margarine or a vegetable spread, proper butter is the only option!
A crumpet is also not a pikelet; they are like a hybrid of a pancake with a drop-scone.

Not allowed them any more. Yeast gives me gout
But I used to love them! 😋
I. Love. Crumpets.

Or if you don't have crumpet rings you can make pikelets
Is this the cookie/biscuit thing all over again?

Yes please 😄
This is just for birthdays and special occasions

Less butter soaks into muffins than into crumpets because muffins don’t have the big holes.

Muffins have a smooth surface all over, then we split them to reveal a somewhat craggy inside.
USA 'English muffins' are identical to UK. Haven't seen a USA crumpet ever.
But ok.
here's one i had months ago lol

A crumpet’s sole purpose is as a butter delivery vehicle.
Mmmmm, a warming beefy hot salty drink
I recently had to tell my Canadian husband to stop calling these crumpets, because it sounded silly to my American ears.
