I’m saying this in my capacity as an author and once and future library worker:
Read whatever the hell you want.
I cannot impress enough on you that the “important” books aren’t important if you don’t jive with them. The popular books, the canon, the whatever. Read what you want.

If it floats your boat it doesn't matter what it is, if not it still doesn't matter what it is
Why can't people be allowed to just do stuff for fun and because they enjoy it
🤓😇
I didn’t care. As long as the kids were reading something, It was a victory.
Everything I learned how to logically come to conclusion on about in this life was with the assistance of the wisdoms of a librarian.
Science, politics, historical fact, human experience, et al.
Long regin the Library & those who house the book.
I love books & reading, but feel...
So, while I understand the necessity in reading certain books, to help develop a better understanding of English, or any language, and to help develop ideas and critical thinking...
I love Orwell, Bradbury & Dick so it wasn't much of a leap to read Kafka - as he's often cited alongside the aforementioned authors....
I just don't like his writing style or storytelling. So I gave up trying to find something...
I was at university before I felt OK about not finishing a book, why I don't know. We turn movies off if we don't like them, I'll drop an anime series after 3 episodes if I'm not enjoying it. But with books, it was always ingrained in me that you had to finish...
I feel like telling students it's OK to drop a book part way...
I was a lit major and like a lot of classics to varying degrees but the reason they're classics can be arbitrary and often come with important context that's overlooked.
I’m an author and an avid reader. Literary critiques are far more valuable than best seller lists for assembling my TBR pile. Read what you love, not what everyone else is buying.

If it’s not interesting or relevant or assigned class reading, there are no consequences to skipping.
You don’t HAVE to have read any one particular book to be compassionate, capable, intelligent, or kind.
I had to ask permission to do a report on Cat’s Cradle in high school. The teacher demanded we read something to her literary standards.
But I was pissed off. An allegory about nuclear proliferation? A look at the weird tech cults driven to destroy everyone? How could THAT be useful?
The only one who gets to determine that is the reader, and that’s my HTDO.
That's why I just put 'Huckleberry Finn' on hold at the library--I just read a review of 'James' by Percival Everett and thought I might get more
It's hard to stop reading in the middle of a book.
~ Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood
My great fury was feeling like I couldn't go as far or as fast as I wanted and disliking other kids.
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Wuthering Heights
Jane Eyre
The Great Gatsby
Things I was lukewarm on:
Of Mice and Men
To Kill a Mockingbird (really wanted to like it)
There was another one in Brit Lit I can't remember.
The Canterbury Tales
Beowulf
the Illiad (though I think we could've had a better translation)
Death of a Salesman
MacBeth
But him just kind of giving up in the end felt wrong for what I read.
And that’s okay. They were written by a much earlier generation and it spoke to them. The books we love today speak to our generation.
And I would add, be reluctant to not finish a book. If you don't like it, figure out why. See if there is anything you can gain from the book. Every book has something to offer, but understand that something may not be positive. That's okay! The world isn't always positive.
ONLY because I read storybooks by the crate full.
I am making a solemn vow to go to the library instead of online consumption:)
TL:DR I agree
Read on!

The danger of supressing ideas and the potential for such actions leads to broader persecution.
I was reading James Baldwin
at 11.
Read EVERYTHING you want - books, cereal boxes, road signs, et al & it all.
Whatever words you get *something* from are there for reading.
Read what you love!!
Life's too short to force yourself to read things.
Also, I love a lot of classics. People hate on them and that's fine, but I'm gonna keep rereading Jane Eyre and love the chaos every time.
I couldn't agree more. Books are great based on the way they make you feel and think. The truth that different books will be amazing to different people is more important than any particular book could be.
And of course sometimes they’re shit - but that’s interesting to know too!
Read a little Read magazine, yes
All of us grew up in the 90s so...
I can't imagine it any other way.
The world collectively
"NIEN!!!!!"
I’m back to reading books after a long hiatus. 🥰
