The fourth episode of a popular computer game series will have a female protagonist and the reaction from interpersonally spavined freaks demonstrates why I am a gamer but not a Gamer

These dweeboids are obsessed with hyper-realistic visuals but incapable of recognizing that to afford the graphics arms race, game developers can't just sell games tailored to weird creeps.
Just the mouthy ones with enough time to game and spew shit opinions in social media. It was literally laid out in the third in the series and these plonkers are bots and non-reproducing twats.
It's significantly better now, and it has a lot of great stories. I think CDPR's biggest strength is that they have very well done side-stories instead of collectathons.
That said, it was never as groundbreaking as it was pitched it would be. It's still a solid game tho and worth grabbing on sale.
Look, many of us were angered and dismayed by how Third Edition (aka Cyberpunk Green) turned out but with Mike Pondsmith spending all that time with Microsoft what could we do?
And Red's certainly shown that we won't see another Green.
I think there's more people making rage-farming Youtube videos about that then there are people actually upset about it. Rage farming that stuff is a cottage industry, but I've yet to hear anyone actually complaining about Ciri being the new protagonist other than those clickbaiters.
I blame YT immensely for trying to force feed people that junk too. The algorithm is FUBAR, one Germy TheQuartering video and next thing you see in your feed is 10 more plus all his shitty friends and the only way to get rid of them is the hidden "Do not recommend channel" button.
I think it depends of the girl, how she is included in a narrative and gameplay. People see Lord of The Rings and finds natural a dumb Hobbit killing giant horrible beasts with a small sword - part of entertainment industry.
/2 It is SUPER UNREALISTIC to suggest that a GIRL could become a monster-hunting magical mutant that’s clearly only a BOY thing for the following eight reasons premised in LOGIC and REALITY
This mirrors the rage that the protag of the next Assassin's Creed is Black. These people have their heads so far up their asses that they can tickle their tonsils with their tongues.
When a younger in-law's desire for MMA merch caused concern that he might be on the path to Joe Rogan inceldom or something the first information finding question that came to mind was "Has he asked for a 'gaming pc' recently?"
Women kicking ass and taking names goes way back in pulp/SF/fantasy literature. (With the usual caveats that they were still products of their time and the need for commercial success.)
They’re outrage tourists. It doesn’t matter if they don’t know anything about the canon beyond vague memories of playing Witcher 1 back in their tweens, they just want something to throw a tantrum about.
Much like it's ridiculous that this person who has horns and can shoot flame from their mouth could be non-binary in a game where Elven gods are trying to take over the world and you're living in an underwater lighthouse between realities.
Doubly weird because literally 2 short story collections and an entire novel series exists because Geralt was training her to take over for him. I'm not even kidding, if you haven't read the books or short stories, that's basically what they are about.
In fact for awhile people assumed the games took place in an alt universe because by the end of the book series Ciri should have already been the main character
Exactly! My memory of the books is a bit foggy, but I recall there was a time the books followed Ciri almost exclusively as Geralt recovered from very grave injuries. Clearly these outraged gamers haven't read the books (unsurprising)
Yeah but think what they would make of the really weird Ciri in elfland where the king elf has to have sex with her for reasons but doesn’t because she is a disgusting human?
I loved how the "final confrontation" was Ciri walking into the portal and your relationship up to that point was the actual "boss fight". Done really well, had great parental themes. Wish Hollywood would do passing the torch stories that well.
Yeah, they may not though. Or there may be a different alchemy system. Only the potions really would be problematic. But it's an opportunity to open up the mechanics.
I think the trailer indicates they intend to keep potions. Which is good because that was one of my favorite mechanics in Witcher 3 and I really didn’t want to lose that for teleports
I'm sure most of those complaining were also the ones who could never manage to get the "good" ending cutscenes in the third installment because that would require they understand how to love and respect said girl.
Oh. Witcher. She literally was in the 3rd game as a playable part.
Ciri being the next character makes complete logical sense, she was set up as such. The happiest ending in Witcher 3 involves Geralt giving her a silver sword to be a Witcher for the love of god.
It's honestly kind of exhausting. Fem V in 2077 is easily my favorite V. Phantom Liberty had Songbird, who was superbly written. CDPR can write complex stories with women as the protagonist and with good voice acting make it really special.
I'd love to talk about how this is all due to Joe Rogan and Andrew Tate, but sadly, I've got access to some old Dragon articles on making female D&D characters and they're... pretty damn bad.
I found it: Dragon no. 3, where, among other things, women have "Beauty", not "Charisma", and female thieves can cast "Seduction". Including a table cross-indexing the race of the caster and the target to determine how seduceable they are.
Even worse reactions to Intergalactic, a sci-fi game from the makers of The Last of Us, for daring to have a bald Korean/African-American woman as the protagonist.
There were more than zero angry responses when my wife designed a dragon-themed board game in which the depicted dragons did not exactly match the specific lore preferred by the aggrieved individuals.
Technically the cover dragon was a wyvern and not a wyrm, as suggested by the title of the game. She actually knew that and anticipated people pointing that out when the art and title were chosen.
There are choads saying that being forced to play a female character breaks immersion for them. They want the game to allow for gender selection so they can play as a male character. I'm guessing they also don't like reading books that don't have white male protagonists as well.
Walking in another person’s shoes is the ability to not only see the world from their perspective but to feel it as if you were them. Empathy is sorely lacking in todays society.
Ciri is still human, despite her Elder Blood. And the Trials kill most kids that have been preparing for them for YEARS. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just surprising that that's the path they took.
Ciri is the exception for all natural laws, she was made like this by Sapkovskiy. Comparing her to regular humans is ridiculous, you need to throw away all that we know about her
I just, i have to believe that a very small fraction are complaining about that, a slightly larger fraction is arguing with them about it, and the vast majority of people are blissfully unaware and excited for a new game.
Why don't more people just play to their deep insecurities and ask them why it's so important that they stare at a man's ass instead of a woman's for 70+ hours? They always get squirmy with that one
Reminds me of the guy who was furious that Overlord, the movie about zombie nazis, was not accurately historic because it had a black American paratrooper.
I read that Ciri is ugly, old and angry. Because of that, she has to be either woke or even trans.
Yeah, THIS Ciri.
But I guess that´s what you get if you do not see females as persons with their own agenda and feelings. She has to be a man to own those.
I've never played the games, but loved the series. Even i could see this as a possibility, especially once what happened with the casting, happened. Unlike those "Gamers" and others, I don't give a shit about it, either, I'm going to watch and enjoy it as well.
Look; do not paint all gamers like this.
I've been a gamer my entire life, starting with me getting an Atari 2600 for Christmas one year.
99% of gamers are not dirtbags. Nor do we put up with the gamer dirtbags.
Two or three set pieces but yeah. One of the endings and the resolution of the last DLC also heavily implied Geralt was done and Ciri was going to take the mantle.
I was surprised -- I have no idea why, I guess I'm not jaded enough yet -- to hear that the usual incels were up in arms about Ciri being the protagonist of Witcher 3.
Literally nobody who was an actual fan of Witcher 3 would object to this in any way. It is completely in keeping with the series.
I remember peeking into /r/kotakuinaction back in the day (the main gamergate hub), and it was remarkable how many of these folk raging every day at women/lgbt/folk of colour being in games didn't actually play any games. It's just an excuse.
Yeah in a couple set pieces. But that wasn't the only thing. DLC basically having Geralt retire to the country side and him giving her a Witcher silver sword in the "good" ending. Was all but screaming "She's next".
It was obvious she'd be next since forever, and its a great transition (I felt The Witcher 3 was a perfect send off for Geralt). Though a lot of the complaints aren't that its a woman, but that they said she had undergone the trial of grasses and had mutated into a full Witcher, fully against lore.
Not really. Lore is never as fixed as that. The idea that it is impossible was already shot down in 3. Yen used a modified version of the Trial of Grasses to save Avalach. She apparently has been studying the process quite a bit to the point of being able to successfully modify it.
And yes, I KNOW. I'm enough of a dork that it does slightly bother me to break lore like that (especially since Ciri was already bad ass with magic abilities. Didn't need Witcher shit on top of it), but not in any way that makes me not excited for another game.
In the book "Sword of Destiny" Geralt remarks, in reference to Ciri, on a myth that a child of destiny will become a witcher without going through the trails. Geralt dismissing something as a myth is a common foreshadowing trope in the books.
I am guessing they are going to have a reason that her Elder Blood powers are suppressed or exhausted(the fight with the White Frost is a good excuse) For game play reasons they HAD to tone her down.
I have been part of the Borderlands game community for a long time...now people attack the "wokeness" of every teased new release despite the fact that is a game that had a DLC around a gay wedding, has transgender characters, and has always been incredibly diverse...it is all exhausting
Yeah, working at GameStop from 2004-~2009 made me come to this realization long before GamerGate. Now every time there’s a Aloy or Ciri controversy I have traumatic flashbacks to those years
I dont play games so I don't understand lil boy men being upset at literal fiction.
Don't any of these kids have moms. Strength is pushing a 10lb screaming lump of sentient flesh you made through a keyhole.Yet this character is to big a stretch for them
This might be the stupidest time to be alive
The detailed analysis of her facial features, along with scientifically-sounded gobbledegook from these troglodytes has already begun. They are literally measuring things on screenshots to tell us that she's really, obviously, a man. Or something. Who can tell with these weirdos.
Most folks only know of the first part, his voyage to Lilliput. Gulliver also goes to Brobdingnag - a land of giants, Laputa - a flying city of vapid thinkers, a couple other places, Japan, and the land of the Houyhnhnms - talking horses.
Actually Breakout. That endorphin rush when the ball made it through the wall, the ball suddenly fast bouncing between the remaining bricks and the ceiling as the score went crazy.... If you know, you know.
It's been interesting seeing the divergence of 'Gamer' culture from 'gamer' culture over the last decade.
Most of the outrage tourists live in entirely parallel universes from people who actually play the games they talk about, with distinct YT and SM silos that they mistake for majority opinion.
It’s not like it’s so random chick is taking over the franchise. It’s the protagonist’s daughter who was a central playable character in the third game. Ciri is basically the secondary lead of Witcher 3 anyway. It goes without saying but these people are fucking nuts.
I usually say I play a lot of video games, but I’m not a gamer. It’s not part of my identity. A lot of “Gamers” seem to spend so much time online whining, I can’t believe much time to actually play games is left.

How do these people type and breathe at the same time?
Spavined \SPAV-ind\ adjective.
1 : affected with swelling.
2 : old and decrepit : over-the-hill.

The jig is up. Give us the keys to your time machine.
That brought me to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies come
Flailing around
Gross scene 20 years ago. Worse now.
Or Red Sonja.
Or Jirel of Joiry.
Just off the top of my head. There's more.

Loki shapeshifts into female form, gets pregnant and gives birth: outta here with this woke shit!
Me: I figured the talking dog would have tipped you off.

Which are canon, by the way.
Mind you, this was an effort to reach out to the distaff D&D player. I think the article title was something along those lines.

That, or they made all the wrong decisions in the game. 😂
Yeah, THIS Ciri.

"AGHHHNOOOOOO!": incel dude playing a game as a human female or non-white human.

thank you for teaching me a new word
My personal favorite to slip into conversation is "brobdingnagian". It's the opposite of "lilliputian". Literally, as in from the same source.
(They seem ok with her controlling space and time, though).
