Climate change is moving faster than scientists projected & they're not totally sure why. One possible explanation is declining cloud cover. If that's true, we may be entering a feedback cycle that accelerates warming much faster than we've modeled.

You were warned over a 100 years ago but you all ignored it as you busily ravaged the environment for your prosperity.
Ever forgetting for one to prosper another 1000 are impoverished.
Your prosperity also impoverished the very web that Humanity relies on for its existence as you now begin destroying the very foundation of that Web of Life. To satisfy your greed and desires.
Science struggling to understand the complex interactions that occur between the multitude of processes that rule this planet and the life it begat.
As it is a complex analogue system not a complex digital system everyone imagines it to be.
This is just proof of that complexity.
I got very lucky after a super stupid event and ended up on 6th floor San Rafael upper class man dorm at UCSB, aka the Science and Tech floor. Reagan era. This was a topic discussed often. My hopes was that I was born old enough to miss the grand entry.
Assuming we don't do something worse like starting another world war, climate change will be the lasting shame of the boomers that took all that hope and prosperity and have given us cancer in return
Not all "boomers" fit into your little box. I'm barely in the stupid ass category, but FYI, SOME of us have been vocal and active about the climate crisis longer than many of the people casting blame.
I remember that in the early days (around 1990) several models assumed that cloud cover would increase. I believe this was a parameter value rather than thermodynamically determined. I believe that the cloud type is important so maybe the models were not sophisticated enough back then.
Cognizant of accelerating climate change & the increasing prevalence & severity of climate disasters, the Trump administration is ... purging all mentions of climate change from DHS's work.
"The world's frozen oceans, which help to keep the planet cool, currently have less ice than ever previously recorded, satellite data shows." Ah well, probably fine.
I mean we knew this was likely but idiots have flooded the space with denialism and forced climate scientists to always try to present the most optimistic projections rather than the realities or worst case scenarios - 'oh no you're just a climate
We keep trying to build models and predict based on those models but our models fail to predict historical climate changes, so why do we assume that our models are okay?
Has anyone ever read or watched The Road by Cormac McCarthy? I've done both. I don't recall ever being told the cause of the extinction event that led to their world collapsing. However, I'm beginning to believe Mr. McCarthy was a psychic as well as a great writer.
No chance we go extinct? Wait until you hear about all the insects rapidly going extinct on our planet. If the insects all go, then our species goes extinct with them.
very low odds that humans go extinct even if we drop to 100,000 globally (which iirc, we have one once before, and i think our ancestor species have survived that multiple times) - i think insects will go extinct long after we do, and the biomass will outlast insects
I decided to fact check myself. You may be right. There are huge gaps in knowledge because most scientific research on insect populations is in the US and Europe, so the "Insectageddon" is not a globally comprehensive argument. Thanks for correcting me.
Cloud cover can be dependent on shifts in the magnetic field. But the elimination of most snow cover and sea ice reduces the ability of the sun's infrared radiation to be reflected rather than absorbed.
I could go on for many hours and hundreds of studies as we so f**king underestimate what is coming at us and its so much more than just clouds - this shit I love-made just short
We do not hit the fan with shit, we blow the f**king roof to the sky with shit :D Oh drill baby drill my little fascists!
You have to speak out, as this is serious - add you cloud feedback to that study result as the discussion starts now:
Is ocean heat uptake weakening due to stratification which is in combination with increases in MLD and suppressed heat loss causing the surface ocean to warm faster - SST/clouds!!!
This then leads to a cloud feedback over the continents as higher SSTs suppress moisture transport to the continents - https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1722312115 which supports a cloud feedback over the continents
In the next step reinforced by evaporation all not correctly simulated
"current climate models may overestimate evapotranspiration intensifications, leading to an underestimation of atmospheric drying, with critical implications for accurately predicting droughts, wildfires, and climate adaptation
We have likely been metastable, past our tipping point, for some time.
Past mass extinctions and climate crashes appear instantaneous, but they aren't - crashes, even with asteroid impacts, take time. What's happening is an eyeblink, geologically, even if the crash is a few years to decades long.
Yeah. I'm just so sorry about the planet. For future generations, for wildlife. Might as well go out with a bang. There's going to be nobody left able to deal with the reactors once the killing starts.
I'm seeing evidence that the oceans, which have up to now moderated global warming by absorbing a lot of the heat, have reached their thermal storage capacity
The climate is a complex & chaotic system & so will continue to display unanticipated consequences, a number of which will likely feed back
I mean, it's obviously because we're in the end of days: WWIII approaching; asteroid incoming; moron on the rise... Did I say moron? I meant bigotry... You know what, I was right the first time... Where was I? That's right, moron - that reminds me: have I mentioned america yet?
This is in line with Lindzen’s predictions. He figured the reduced cloud cover would mean more long wave radiation will get reflected away. He’s a crank, but man, I hope he’s right, because we’re about to find out.
Plus, reduced cloud cover seems problematic for other reasons. Rain is a good thing.
As a bit of a weather nerd since the 1990s, it seems to me that climatologists have been surprised about the speed of change continuously since them. They should roll out the worst-case scenario and let that sink in for a while
I can't find a citation, but it's well known in climate science circles that in avoiding alarmism scientists tend to publish conservative results. What's fed to the public is more conservative still.
Current events are within predictions, but on the higher end. The title is sensationalist.
The one upside we retain is that for a system this size, “almost instantly” may still unfold over tens or hundreds of years rather than seconds - but I still wish more people understood the danger of feedback loops so we wouldn’t have to find out
Oh absolutely - and if I were stating my confidence window, I would say we’re within 20 years of total collapse the likes of which no one is preparing for - but to attempt an optimistic spin, that *is* enough time for the collective will of humanity to create solutions.
Personally I think it’s the Creator who has had enough of the BS of Trump and MAGA and white nationalists soiling the world in Her name. She is saying “Enough is enough, it’s time to spank the Trumpers.”
Surely it is the disproportionatly high warming at the poles that is accelerating it. Ice melt changing sea flows and arctic tundra defrosting and releasing methane gas.
Faster than expected isn't a catch phrase it's a reality and we as a species are to divided to stop it. You can choose your timeline but the end result is the same. Goodbye civilization.
We are becoming victims of our partial success in fighting climate change. We have reduced the number of particulates in the upper atmosphere, allowing more of the suns radiation to hit the earth instead of being reflected back into space by the particulates. Temporary Feedback loop.
Not sure who is having less cloud cover but there is a lot more in NWFlorida. It used to get cloudy, rain, then blue skies would appear. Now we get cloud cover for days, just like I used to see in the Midwest.
My belief is that the feedback cycle has already begun and the overall weather trend will be increasing global temperatures and less stability for the future. Just a gut-reasoned conclusion.
I’m praying it’s not that and is something the community missed with hunga tonga. It was huge eruption and if toba had climate effects why not hunga tonga?
My theory about why tech bros have such a hard on for buying San Francisco real estate and trying to turn it into their Christian “libertarian” paradise is that SF will stay nice and cool and foggy while all around it will burn
Not sure why I was sent this new version of the handbook on slowing down big bureaucracies. The person wrote: Don't Resign--Resist! Just passing it on. https://www.dropbox.com/t/nx8zH47GeWQs2D8R
We’ve been hearing about this crap since the 70’s. A single volcano eruption or even the fires in CA put more pollution in the atmosphere than all humans.
The Bible says Jesus will appoint the clouds. It also says natural disasters will increase like birth pangs, more often, more intense . It also says there will be a one world government. Written thousands of years ago, it's happening now.
It’s all the f…ing bombs! Look where the disasterous wars are - run a ring around the world and voila…
Russia and Israel need to be accountable for the damage, others need stop making armaments. Do climate change scientists watch the news?
It’s the greenhouse gases.
“A Guardian calculation found […] the heating has accelerated over that time as carbon emissions have risen, and was now the equivalent of between three and six atomic bombs per second.”
It is strangely too coincidental that scientists have found unaccountable acceleration of climate change conditions, since the Netanyahu and Putin started bombing.
This is always what bothered me about Matt Yglesias' (not on bsky) coverage of climate change as a problem that only affects remote island nations--it refuses to grapple with the idea of tipping points or positive feedback cycles. To me, it's impossible to grapple with climate change otherwise
So his interviews always frame fighting climate change as a somewhat low priority alongside things like foreign aid, whereas to me the shutdown of ocean currents or mass die-out of plankton could result in literal human extinction. I always found this to be a baffling blind spot for everyone
They tracked this with how the reduction in pollution over the oceans is contributing to a spike in temps there too. Clouds matter. So does ice reflecting all that heat back out into space...
And with it melting in places like Greenland we end up with runaway heat increases. And in Alaska and northern areas permafrost is melting and releasing even more greenhouse gases.
complex systems have emergent behaviour that are attributable to a single cause, or even "starting conditionals" but due to the sensitivity of relationships between variables/state.
anybody following @djspratt.bsky.social David Spratt and late Phillip Dutton knows IPCC is forced to play catchup.
Have you guys looked at the Weather forecasts for the next few days. Stop the fear mongering. We’ve pissed enough money away already on the Climate Hoax.
When a complex feedback system has too much stimulation from a new source, it loses phase margin & stability, chaos emerges as the system tries to find a new homeostasis.
We do not know where the threshold is when the system flips out of control and the Venus effect of runaway heating kicks in.

One thing feedback systems have in common: They behave very predictably until the control limits are exceeded, and then they fail almost instantly
I fear this is part of what we're seeing
We have successfully pulled a climate disaster into the middle of all our lifetimes
It’s just that they won’t.
Plastic straws for everyone🦇💩🤪

Regardless of cause(s), let's just clean the air from pollution and stop doing dumb things like destroying nature.
