Had to clamber over a barbed wire fence, rip my coat and trespass to get a photo of this folkloric monster pretending half-successfully to be a tree. I have no regrets.

The other favourite 'tree as person' I have taken (on Kinder Scout in January, 2018)
On the day I took this, I sent it to my editor @simonguy.bsky.social who sent it to the artist Joe McLaren, and it subsequently became the basis for the cover of my book Help The Witch.
@dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social I just tried to send you something interesting, but it looks like it didn’t go through. Chat me up let me explore my profitable Idea
This reminds me of taking a walk with my then 18mo grandson when we came across a tree that he thought looked like the “Gruffalo” from the book of that name.
He gave it wide berth as we walked past it and kept his eye on it the entire time, ready to run if it so much as turned in his direction.
...Until one night you wake up to the sound of branches scraping across the window pane & roots growing under the door as it returns for the piece of its soul you've captured.
I met a friend of your “tree” …this one has a smug smirk, two very large horns and a lovely big curved tail to the right and behind it (to me anyway, do you see it??)
We turned a corner and happened upon this guardian of the woods while on a walk in the Wye Valley. It's the sort of encounter you have to take very seriously...
This is awesome. Don’t get the tree angry. This one decided to go out in ablaze of glory attempting to take out the firefighters rescuing an idiot motorist stuck in the ford that it clearly felt was its human sacrifice.

I mean, I'm not exactly the man to go charging into the death woods to save him...
Good luck.
