So we now can’t conscionably use X, FB or Insta. At the end we’re going to be communicating through those paper cups tied together with string because everything else is run by a complete bastard.

I'm starting to run out of places to advertise my books and craft businesses. Guess I'll have to go old school and start stapling fliers to telephone poles. Hmm, I wonder how much it costs to rent one of those skywriter planes?🤔
This is the point btw. After the Arab Spring, revolutions against governments became organized on social media. If you just close a site, a replacement pops up. You have to discourage the exact demographic that would rebel from using the exact type of social media that allows them to organize it.
They won’t stop until we are ignorant about the happenings around us because we either 1) opted out of media, or 2) rawdog right wing media (all of the majors are essentially right wing controlled media)
True - & to quote a line from the Desiderata
"Remember what peace there may be in silence."
I'm slowly deleting accounts, and in the process, I feel more liberated.
Before the internet we used the postal service. This is why so many people are angry that Biden didn’t replace DeJoy. I was in the tech industry for 45 years and never bought into those cesspits. I really don’t get why people are so upset about companies who pander to narcissists. It’s off putting.
If and I have to say its an if because coming up with an idea and raising money are to different things but if we or someone can get this up an running we can talk to whoever we want
Nope now we have Bluesky, Substack, our writers that use Atlantic, The Guardian, and several other up and coming blue, liberal groups. It is just a change of place.💙
Yes, mine is sending articles from the Guardian but he's on two other messaging apps instead of WhatsApp, so now I need eight different messaging apps installed to keep up with all my relatives and pass messages between them. I'm ready for the yogurt pots and string 😵💫🤯🤡
Seconded. WhatsApp was my last Meta app, but I ditched it for Signal this week and no complaints. It's non-profit and their board of directors isn't a cabinet of horrors.
CEO OF SOLO CUPS: After careful consideration, I have decided there's no such thing as P's. Nobody can use P's on my service without first clearing it with the Oklahoma Court of Apppeals.
The sad thing is that not even books are a trusted source of information (particularly since the rise of genAI, but also just because books have never been 100% accurate because people aren't). Like, libraries are truly a bastion of knowledge and hope, but discretion is more important than ever.
You know, maybe AIM, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger shutting down was probably for the better; they all would've ran into that same issue. (Instead, we have community run third-party servers like NINA/Escargot, which may be the way forward at this rate, heh)
I’m old enough to remember when batshit crazy conspiracy theorists had to work hard for their crazy. Newsletters. Conventions. You didn’t really have to deal with them at all. And no influencers. Didn’t know what people were eating unless you were with them. Life without social media wasn’t so bad.
I think that's the idea- make all of our social messaging sites so intolerable that we stop using them - better (from the perspective of the billionaires) that we don't have a way to mobilize/share news
We’ve still got Bluesky, Damus, & “IF” it ever happens Lifder.
I would say Tribel as well, but it seems like the issue I faced multiple times has been worsening with many others reporting the random posts being removed, not being able to post, randomly being locked out, nonexistent support, etc.
Oh no we'll have to use Slack, Asana, Trello, Jira, Basecamp, Teams, Discord, Meet, Gchat, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, Yammer, or OH MY GOD HELP US: EMAIL to communicate without actually speaking to each other. 🙄
Anything that's a corporation can be bought. Any corporation that isn't owned by the irresponsibly rich (IE a bastard) will be if it gets valuable enough. Being a corporation insulates you from financial and criminal consequences, so everything that can will try to be a corporation. So here we are
I don’t cate whether Mr. Zucchini is nice or not. I don’t give a shit if he’s a robot or cool-surfer-dude.
I care if it’s ok for lgbtq ppl (like me) to be called abnormal, and for those voices to be amplified. I care if it’s spreading lies about trans people, with the company doing nothing.
I was talking to a doctor when I was in the hospital. He'd be somewhere close to my age (60). We came to the conclusion that we used to communicate more effectively when there was one landline in each house and notes scribbled on empty cigarette packages.
I don’t want to sound like an old man: but I remember the brief period with cell phones, the internet, but no social media. We were fine. We could still call each other. We just had to understand that people weren’t always available to us and that we had to see people in person more.
True -- but more than anywhere else, we might have the power to change that oligarchy on the internet. Bluesky is a good example -- all we have to do is make / use services and websites not owned by those few oligarchs... and find like-minded people to do the same.
And yet billionaires own that which we use today, because what came before simply doesn't provide the level of interaction the public has come to expect.
We can still use forums, but the majority wouldn't be interested, which limits the value somewhat
Except we are all here and not on a forum or BBS because they are just far too limited.
However, if Bluesky is as I understand, coded in such a way that anyone can replicate it so people can move "ecosystem" while still maintaining site data...
...maybe Bluesky will be more user friendly than not
Social media real estate is essentially free — come up with a platform that attracts a critical mass of people and it is self sustaining. Even if not as toxically sticky and manipulative as Facebook.
Why not establish politically left social media town squares and all hang out there
Or may be go back to forums?
I still have my admin rights at local big IT hardware forum which incluse a general section. There are no bots, trolls, MAGAs, Nazis, rashists there or they are a minority and keep it quiet.
There was a time we didn't have any of this. A better time. A dime in a payphone and someone actually answered. People were decent because they couldn't hide behind a screen and pretend. Lies were lies and shitheads didn't get to be president
I'm sticking with FB as well as this because I have a community of friends there, I ignore adverts and clickbait, and (with my hearing) talking to all my friends in one post is a lot better/easier than multiple texts or phone calls.
Nah, BlueSky is the way. Open source, user-controlled - we will see this explode in popularity once people see the potential and decide to stop putting money in the pockets of fascist, trump-supporting, sociopaths
Lol everything has been run by complete bastards forever. America is a good example. We're founded on institutional slavery and ethnic dehumanization. The business world is called cut-throat because to thrive you have to be empathy-less scum. Glad you're starting to see the picture tho.
There are many of us who remember the Internet before these programs and it was a pretty good place. Discussion forums everywhere, individual creators with their own websites, and web rings. Remember those?
I'm old enough to have experienced and worked on the web from the late 90s-mid 00's. All of these things were around and there were vibrant communities everywhere.
Social media moguls have made us believe that without them there's no Internet. We should prove them wrong.
Fellow old chiming in. I remember these times. They were wonderful. The closest I’ve found to this is the revival happening at Neocities (they’re even reviving webrings). Neocities even have HTML tutorials for newbs.
It’s entirely possible for us to have this again and not at all some silly dream.
We should have never stopped using BBS forum sections of websites that were hosted out of some guy's house in the suburbs with small-yet-dedicated mod teams.
Yes can someone clever make a new insta so we can look at pretty things and a new FB so we see what our (actual) family and friends are up to and what local events/businesses are good. Something that doesn’t push me to buy anti anti-aging product every 3 mins would be great . Please 🙏
It should be pointed out that BlueSky is also run by complete bastards - specifically, crypto bros. The fact it is not a cesspit is a complete accident.
Basically, the issue is nothing is going to be perfect. For example those that don't like AI will flip when they figure out this whole site is ran by AI
You can't run something like this with 20 full time employees
🎶Now red Solo cup and string is the best social networking

Still the best choice for now obviously.
#youcanonlytruststring
BlueSky doesn’t do this. (yay!)
Some people don’t know that.
On that basis, I'm fine with it.
What's changed other than Zuck taking the mask fully off?
and what's wrong w/ bsky?
I would say Tribel as well, but it seems like the issue I faced multiple times has been worsening with many others reporting the random posts being removed, not being able to post, randomly being locked out, nonexistent support, etc.
It's time we embrace French history, a very specific era of French history.
We don't need to overextend ourselves.
😇

Also, write some physical letters, its good for your brain
Only come back to X periodically to check if I've missed anything important.
So far, I haven't missed a damn thing.
It's all about funding and connections
In the end those with said funding and connections have a tendency to buy up everyone else's ideas and rebrand them as theirs
You know, like Musk with basically everything his name is attached to

Wonder if they can get it up and running again.
Might be a better world.
What a f@cking sh!tshow.
