Rent it out to permanent tenants, give a family a home,‘cos no one needs two. Then it's a business.Tenant pays the council tax,job done. Keeping it empty for occasional holidays is wasteful & yes, definitely a "second home",& one should be taxed accordingly.Nothing to moan about. She's a lucky lady.
The saddest part of this propaganda is that a sizeable portion of Britain believes it. Petit booj money worshippers and "I'm alright Jack" types who think people like this columnist are getting a raw deal and how it's OK to hoard wealth.
Just thinking out loud but if you reverse mortgage one of them technically the bank will own it so you’ll only own one. Just gotta think outside the square a bit 😛
Struggling to think of circumstances when inheriting a second house won't make someone wealthier than they were before. Whether it makes them wealthy per se depends a bit on your definition of wealthy.
She is also classed as a buffoon who gets paid by Murdoch for writing tosh like this for other eejits who believe they have a right to store up as much wealth as they like without paying anything extra.
I sometimes do wonder if The Times is constantly trolling us to keep the fear and envy in class divisions firmly simmering away. So long as we are fighting each other, we won’t turn on those in power.
Great point! So many UK journalists write about shit that only affects them. Wall to wall coverage of Clarkson & the farmers bringing London to a standstill over Inheritance, VAT on school fees, second home CT, Planning Law.
Poverty?, Benefit cuts?, Local Services getting fucked?
Not so much…..
I never count my second home as my second home. My fifth house is my second home.
The other three belong to the family trust, so they're hardly mine.....
You don't even have to have two homes. When I started, I worked in a post with accommodation, used the money to buy my first home, and got done CGT when I sold it, as they claimed it was a second home.
It never ages! God knows in these benighted times when the US President makes Baldrick look like a genius we need humour. The Blackadder original https://youtu.be/EbjtSALr38E?si=bpZ4S8bXWTy5I7aH
There may be capital gains tax from date of inheritance until date of disposal (not sure, can't remember), but hey, take that out of the proceeds of the free house.
I imagine there is a lot of variation across councils, but the central government site describes a minimum of an exemption until after probate. And implies the six months is fairly standard.
Then the officer was wrong. Date of Probate determines what happens next. A further 6 months exemption until change of occupier/ownership, then watch out! I'd be quiet if I were you!
So I actually found and read the article. And it turns out in a lot of seaside towns there's a second home surcharge on property taxes to discourage air bnb and just having a second seaside home so people who live there can afford housing. So uh it turns out the law is working as intended?
I know. What is the solution? Do homes burn... or is that only in the movies?I think I saw one burn one time, oh but wait, that was a car. Cars are made of metal and houses are made of wood and stone. So burning is out of the question for now until I get more information. Is there a place I can look?
Yes, and they have two years to decide which is their main home so they won’t need to pay CGT if they decide to sell one. And they’re lucky SDLT isn’t payable on inherited (second) properties (if it isn’t sold within 3-years).
I knew the education system in the UK was under pressure but are they failing to teach 1+1 =2 ? Maybe if she sells one house she wont be a second home owner.?
Going to go out on a limb here - if she inherited another house, would she be a third home owner? As she owns her house (1), the one she originally inherited (1) and the hypothetical one I just imagined (1). Quick maths check : 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. It's high level stuff, can somebody check my workings.
Sorry Dave but you have forgotten to apply the Trumpmatics factor:
@ + ₩ / ◇= ☆
where @ (purchased home) has an depreciation impact on the value of ₩ (inherited home)caused by ◇ (the tax on darling offsprings education) resulting in ☆(self entitled BS).
It’s to do with Council tax and Inheritance tax/capital gains tax implications of owning two homes
British things, so nothing to do with $
Point is there are millions of homeless plus those who never will be able to buy a house so in Brit fashion less than sympathy with ‘cost’ of owning two 🏠
Also, do you realize that not everybody wants to own? Completely against people owning too much property, but they’re literally has to be a rental market for the people that want to rent and they like to move around and not be tied down.
Do you realize that owning a home is not very profitable? 10 That’s profitable. I would not even make it out of middle class if I had an extra to rent . I agree we have problems but one home does not make an oligarch
I recently inherited several palaces, loads & loads of land,& a Commonwealth. I am now top dog in the Church of England.
I’ve just had a wonderful tour of Italy. Loved it!
Here's a thought. How about people who are lucky enough to inherit enough that they have to pay a bit of tax stop whinging about having to pay a bit of tax? Try and be positive about how fortunate you are!
There's a bunch of similar whingeing in the BTLegraph too. "Govt said ages ago it would tax second homes. I have a second home which is now being taxed. I'm shocked" (usually pictured with a horse)
And she contributes to the local economy because she visits a few times a year unlike her parents who actually lived there. She probably stops off at Tesco on the way to save her going into the local shops... just in case they switch to speaking Welsh when she arrives. Not a clue
EXACTLY. that person should stfu and sell or transfer the title to someone who actually needs the home or stfu and stop complaining that they have financial privilege
I will give them a little bit of leeway on that one. SEN schools are entirely overwhelmed and underfunded, but if they can afford it, they can pay it can't they, and leave that space for parents who can't.
Exactly what I'm saying. Yes, their child should be able to attend a SEN state school, but if they can afford it, which they obviously can, then it's a good use of those savings, and it clears a space for those with parents who can't afford it.
It’s like when Alexander Armstrong claimed to be poor because he had to send his kids to private school. Not to get an advantage, you understand, just because state schools didn’t offer the range of music classes his kids required. 🤦🏼♂️
The biggest problem with the tax payers alliance is that there whole point is they don't want to pay tax
My problem is that anyone who quotes their comments never adds this very important point
They are just a think tank linked to the Tories, look at their history most of them end up with jobs as SPADS especially when the Tories were in govt. They are as much use as The Free Speech Union.
I remember they first came to note during the farmers fuel protests in the early part of Blair’s first term.
They were portrayed as some grass roots protest group off farmers and middle class tweed types protesting against having to pay duty on fuel.
Actually a dark money funded tufton st mob
Similar in this case, where the "second home" is in a high tourism area and the tax rates were introduced to try an curb the number of non-resident landlords buying up properties to rent out as holiday homes.
They found someone who wasn't a landlord and are hiding behind her to attack the rates.
This case is a bit disingenuous too, as local tax rates were introduced in an area where landlords are buying up properties to use as holiday rentals, harming the local housing market.
She inherited a holiday home in a holiday home area where landlords are being targeted for renting holiday homes.
I tried joining them but their website only offered the option of signing up for their newsletter. I told them I wanted to actually join but they weren't very welcoming; full up, I expect.
Her [presumably private] education seems to have been massively wasted, if adding one and one to make two is beyond her! Is she expecting sympathy, tax relief, or state benefits to help her with the additional costs? Crowd funding maybe?
Comment was tongue in cheek! Many of the people who complain, through articles in media, about 'raw deal' handed out to them in the form of inherited wealth or property, or how easy it is to get on housing ladder [when allowed to live rent-free & subsidised at home], are from privileged backgrounds.
A person who plasters their story, complaining about being classed as owning 2 homes bc they inherited a 2nd home, across a national newspaper, has to have a monster dose of self-entitled privilege. As a rule of thumb, who's more likely? Owning a second home isn't the issue.

See how easy that was?! 😏
That’s what the uber wealthy want. Fighting down the rank and file to keep them safer.
Depending on circumstance, having 2 homes doesn’t always make a person wealthy
Job done.
Could've saved their poor daughter the grief of the extra tax burden.
Narratives are STRONK. 📈

I glad that my stepmother is way younger than my dad. The house will be her problem, not mine.
“I can’t afford my third child’s private school fees!”
“I have to pay more tax on my property portfolio!”
“They’re building houses for peasants in my quiet corner of Kent!”
"I can only get one winter holiday a year now... "
At least that’s what my gran always used to say 🤣

She still wants to break bricks with her shrill voice and thinking too
It’s been troubling the poor woman for ages, even the press is covering it.
Nailed it. 😂
1+1 = 1,
'Some houses?'
*sigh*
'Let's try again...'
1 house + 1 house = 2 houses.
Even toddlers could understand it!
It also says this applies to 2nd home charges.
https://www.gov.uk/council-tax/second-homes-and-empty-properties
Look, hook me up with this homeowner, and I will pay £1 for the house. Easy, peezy, they no longer have a second home.
Higher tax rates both fund the local government infrastructure as well as making buying properties to rent out less profitable.
I wish I had such problems!
It's not really earth-shattering, though, is it?
@ + ₩ / ◇= ☆
where @ (purchased home) has an depreciation impact on the value of ₩ (inherited home)caused by ◇ (the tax on darling offsprings education) resulting in ☆(self entitled BS).
So itd be:
@ + ₩ / ◇ * ■ * ♧ = ☆
Where ■ is one tenth and ♧ is ten times one.
Feel free to donate one of your homes to housing the homeless
🤣
yes, i am judgemental
The high tax rates were introduced to fund the local government, as residence taxes aren't being paid by the property owners.
I would expect more knowledge from ChatGPT.

They may not mean to, but they do.

And add some extra, just for you.

Oddly, there was nobody there who could help me.
Now there's a house short of a gas "incident".
Or is it just because The Times wouldn't sully itself to publish an article by someone from a comprehensive? 😊
Stating the obvious Jolyon is soooo financially draining 🤣..

As I tell you the woes of inheriting a home...
Nice problem to have! Surely she has options, and if she doesn’t want to pay, then she can sell. People complain about the strangest things.
