saw robert reich saying that he's hopeful because "americans hate aristocracy" and oligarchs moving their kleptocracy into the open will turn people against them and man i wish i believed that

Americans are the most propagandized people on the planet and an alarming amount of people have parasocial relationships with their favorite billionaire.
I remember the day that happened and I think you just aren’t hanging out with the right Americans. We had like a day-long party online and in work chats.
It's an age thing I think. All those people obsessed with Princess Diana from the nineties didn't get the memo that the reason she died was because the Royal family is a bunch of monsters
I feel like oligarchs would only move their kleptocracy out into the open once they felt sufficiently safe from any mass dissent, but maybe that's just me being pessimistic
This country is full of dudes who'd declare the guy who runs the car dealership a king if they could. Can't really take someone's predictions seriously when they completely misread the pulse of the nation
The thing is, reality TV and celebrities tell us the opposite. We love aristocrats, we love bridgerton, we love the monarchy the queen and the British royal family drama.
We're fundamentally ignorant and stupid people, ignorant and stupid people love monarchy and aristocracy. We love a show.
Well...that's the fantasy of monarchy. The reality of monarchy is a deeply inbred failson playing dress-up in a specially made military costume and ordering thousands of troops to their death in a war he provoked, while his advisors try desperately to moderate his worst impulses
Which, when it starts to kill people en masse, does tend to lead to uprisings. It's not even Americans specifically, people don't really understand how many peasant revolts there have been throughout European history
Yeah, Americans who love monarchy love Trump's family. They want an American royal family. Conservatives associate longevity and stability with strength, it affirms their moral framework.
We just need to move the fence sitters and the apolitical to start to care more tbf. The brain rotted maga folks live in an alternate reality and will be harder to reach, but we don't need them.
The thing is, we do hate aristocracy and would violently overthrow a system of entrenched aristocrats IF they knew we had one. Problem is the myth of the self made man allow folk to believe they hold power by merit.
I'm pretty sure Americans hate the idea of being ruled by an all-powerful king just as much and in exactly the same way as the Romans did right around the time Octavian decided he'd be safe as an all-powerful ruler so long as he didn't use the K-word.
Has he ever seen Yellowstone? It's six seasons and three spin-offs asking 'wouldn't it be cool if America had a feudal warlord?' and it's viewed by a billion people that nobody has met.
I genuinely thought it was a drama about Park Rangers until recently. I still prefer my version which involves rescuing wolf cubs from stupid tourists and rescuing stupid tourists from bears with beautiful park views in the background.
The McRib was permanently retired several years ago and corporate greed and market forces made McDonald’s bring it back to try to bolster their terrible sales from their shitty practices.
I believe we can McRib our billionaire problem. (We eat them)
They did a really good job in the 20th century getting people to ignore and forget where their wealth comes from so from the American gossip perspective they're just famous because they're rich and "oh isn't all the prim and proper stuff cute"
Americans won’t stop going on about the British monarchy. Like shut up about it already why is it always in US news. Princes and princesses and kings and queens suck. Stop making movies about how cool it is to be rich through inheritance

And it turns out those things are less certain than I believed as a child.
