I follow medical board cases in CA and can name cases where doctors have done procedures like these without consent. They might get a couple years probation but they keep their licenses.
I wish I was shocked- I doubt too many women are actually shocked- enraged yes - but women’s bodies have been violated like this longer than any of us have been alive
I personally know someone who received a bonus from her doctor. When having her appendix removed after it burst he also her one of her ovaries without mentioning it to anyone. She found out years later when having a c-section. Her new Dr told her it was surgically removed.
she was, quite literally, raped. he touched her private parts when she didn't ask for it. she's really been through the wringer, her whole life. it's amazing she's as fantastic as she is!
Reminds me of a friend who had breast implants, special ordered an A cup, and doc decided she’d look better with a C cup during surgery. She had to have them redone.
Nothing surprises me these days when it comes to cis male doctors. The main reason so many of us are switching to an all female or LGBTQIA healthcare team.
Beyond sad & horrifying for Brooke Shields. She is brave to share what is so very personal.
Beyond this...the witch doc who performed this thought he was giving her a two-fer, but all he did was solidify that men don't remotely care about women at all.
The amount of women who report unwanted extra stitches after childbirth is far, far too high - and even though this particular case isn't exactly the same, it's just a reminder that women getting any sort of medical treatment, far too frequently, have their needs, and concerns, ignored by male Drs.
They used to ask the husbands instead of the women about getting what they used to call “the husband stitch” because why ask her about a medical procedure on her own body when the husband could potentially stand to lose better sex 🤦🏻♀️
I watched the documentary with her and her daughters, and it was really very clear to see that she does not even realize how much she was continually violated and abused.
There is nothing that some men will stop at to get their thrills, that truly was a vile and disgusting act by that 'doctor', non-consentual, invasive and unwarranted, it's an assault...
Absolutely unacceptable and yes, could be considered assault. You never, ever, EVER do any procedure without specific consent (possibly excepting an emergency procedure). Terrible judgement by the surgeon.
From most of the stories I hear they just ask the husband if he “wants an extra stitch thrown in”. Of course they’ll say yes, they have no idea what the provider is talking about
George, you have no idea the horror stories women could tell you. And yet we survive we live longer. We can and Will Survive and destroy the putin lovers 💙🇺🇸🇺🇦
I know exactly what you mean. We're looking to move out of the Confederacy to "retire" and the first thing we loom at is where are the healthcare facilities?
I took a trip to Iceland some years ago, and broke an elbow. I got to see firsthand how Iceland manages things in remote areas.
The only problem in my are was I was really out on the boonies in a town pop 500. They'd isn't have an xray machine. It was a two hour drive away and the road was closed due to high winds.
When that cleared a taxi brought me to Selfoss (no ambulances), I got an xray in an ER.
That’s nice good for you. It’s hard to get a doctor to respect anybody who’s older,🫶🫶🫶. I find it as disgusting to know most doctors will just let an older person stay on gabapentin for the rest of the lives not understanding that it’s addictive and not helping the patient.
Unless the impromptu procedure was done for life saving purposes (like, they open you up for gall bladder surgery and find a tumor), it should be considered outright medical malpractice.
There are circumstances in which consent of the next of kin is considered adequate and necessary. An elective procedure on genitalia absolutely should not be one of them.
Had a doctor completely remove one of my organs without my consent while I was having an exploratory surgery, because insurance requested it while I was unconscious, so I can kind of relate. :/
Similarly, after my necessary episiotomy, the doctor who sewed me up gave me the infamous "husband stitch." I still have so much pain and discomfort from that stitching and it's been more than 10 years since I gave birth. I have even had multiple rounds of physical therapy. Fuck that guy.
If I was a woman, I do not think I would broadcast I had a labia reduction surgery and the doctor then also gave me a tighter pussy. Guys don't talk about their ED or mushroom-shaped penis.
It's a vulnerable statement that prioritizes sharing knowledge and caution with others at the expense of one's own pride. This would be incredibly difficult to share with a loved one, let alone the world.
That level of vulnerability really demonstrates her bravery and resilience.
How hard is it to understand consent?! It is her body and no one else's. That is medical r*pe. That doctor shouldn't have even be allowed to keep his license.
Jesus Christ. There are a *lot* of situations where I'd love to get an extra bonus thrown in by surprise, but surgery is *extremely* not one of them. Pretty sure performing surgery without a patient's consent is at least one crime, if not several.
Oh NOW it’s a problem since it was done to a celebrity. Women for decades have been subjected to this and it was a whole ass joke to medical providers and still is for many of them.
Ffs
Why do men feel like they have rights to women’s bodies? Men make laws to control women’s uterus. They touch them without their consent. They do things like this. What kind of monsters behave this way? It is time for a change!
Let's not forget that not only can people with a uterus be denied abortions legally, but that there is a long history of denying people with a uterus the choice to have their tubes tied to avoid becoming pregnant in the first place.
That is what I was going to say, this has the legal grounds of suing. Also science has shown that the “husband stitch” is actually not that beneficial and creates more harm than good.
Look up the "husband stitch" that women are given after birth, often without consent.
Or the fact (believe NYT did some quality reporting on this in 24) that women under anesthesia for any surgery can be subjected to vaginal exams for training purposes.
Yes, we can, and it's super fun when you have a raft of allergies to things like KY jelly.
Docs do not read my chart and constantly try to give me things that will harm me. "All of our other patients are fine with it" is probably how I'll die.
I refused to get an IUD because a close friend nearly died from one (if there are options I don't want the risk). My otherwise lovely female Dr keeps mentioning it as an option. Sigh.
Got one myself. Can't believe I delivered another child with that doctor. I didn't realize at all how problematic it was really. It didn't sit well with either of us though...
How awful that is so sickening.
I’ve heard about that.
It used to be a normal procedure that doctors would do to women after giving birth.
It’s a procedure more for men than women.
This has been done to hundreds of thousands of women over the decades. The number of lawsuits would be unimaginable if every woman who endured this sued
I am very sad for her. But not at all surprised. Most doctors do not listen to women during their visits. It makes many of us not want to go to see them, I can only assume, because they treat you like cattle, It is mostly about the money for most of them.

The fact that he acted like a used car salesman about her body is just… the epitome of objectification.
He thought violating her consent and forever changing her body was “doing her a favor.”
I've had 65 years of medical misogyny and I'm very done with it.
I didn't have a problem in the UK or Iceland. This is some cultural bs.
Beyond this...the witch doc who performed this thought he was giving her a two-fer, but all he did was solidify that men don't remotely care about women at all.
Maybe women should stop caring about them.
My heart goes out to her and anyone else who this has happened too.
I hope she sues them for millions.
At my age I just walk out of a doctors office if they display this behavior. After six decades I finally found a decent MD.

Also, "tighter pussy" can be painful for the woman. It's not all about the dick, my dude.
Proof that our bodies are never fully seen as our own.

Wow…. Never thought I’d have to see women have to worry about non-consensual surgery in this day and age.
Disgraceful behavior, devoid of humanity and ethics.
might wanna rephrase that as it's literal torture just so the male can fuck his slave
Whereas health care for women should also address the needs of men, families, and communities as they relate to women’s health care.

And I've spent years on my own trying to put the MCAS in remission. I'm so much better than just a decade ago.
Good thing I was trained in scientific research. 🤷😂
I’ve heard about that.

That asshole should be in prison.
She also appeared in a series of nude photos for the publication Sugar 'n' Spice in 1975 when [she] was ten."
My maths isn't great, but this doesn't add up.
If the 1975 photo shoot was after May, she would've been 10.
She turned 11 in May 1976.
Pretty Baby was shot in the spring of 1977 (according to Wikipedia), before she turned 12. The movie was released in 1978.
