YES YES YES. And please recognize that what Jamelle is saying here is a more sophisticated and accurate model of public opinion than the vulgar, simple model used by virtually all of our politicians, political consultants, and media, in which the public simply has views that form from the ether.

the thing about “democrats should take popular cultural positions” is that what constitutes popular is a function of an interaction between the public and elites. if a faction of elites start screaming about a vulnerable minority and another faction says they have a point, this shapes the public.

VP flees New England! Vermonters are posting the Vice President's movements to coordinate and to make sure, whichever way he pivots to flee from protesters, they will be there to greet him.

Counterpoint: you should absolutely cancel your subscription. We get the bad opinion pieces because the right wing has worked the refs for nearly a half century now. If the institution is not strong enough to resist them on its own, it is *incumbent* upon us to create countervailing pressure.

people on bluesky will really be like 'you believe in nonviolent resistance? that pales in effectiveness to my strategy, forming disciplined cadres capable of deniable hyperviolence' and then not form disciplined cadres capable of deniable hyperviolence

Zelenskyy stayed in Kyiv while Russia was bombing the city and sending in hit squads to kill him. J.D. Vance fled to an undisclosed location because some peaceful protesters yelled at him while he was on vacation. This is why I believe victory over these people is still possible.

It hasn’t worked despite trying since Constantine, but this is the time we sell out to tyrants and remain morally pure, boys. We’re built different.

Very grateful for this shout-out from @anandwrites.bsky.social!!!! flaminghydra.com/mother-shoul...

You: Oh my god the house is on fire! Me (wise, has read books): And you're surprised? Houses have been on fire before [as the flames consume us both] Furthermore,

Genuinely appalling and revealing how much more thorough, thoughtful and well-researched the videogame speedrunning community has been in evaluating Elon Musk's claims than the tech press or DC political press youtu.be/z1ykCc588Zw?...

I think Dems should not go to the Joint Session Congressional address next week. (Term of art for SOTUs given in first year of a term.) Just don't show up. Convince me that I'm wrong.

America in 2025:

Medicare went from legislation to covering over 90% of eligible Americans within one year, based on mailing people paper forms.

The reason why I think the GOP is Trumpified for the next generation or two unless it faces a Reagan 84 level blowout is that there is no way Republican politicians can repudiate him without incriminating themselves as monsters, cowards, and traitors.

do not get me started on Biden's pathetic fucking response to Trump.

My gut says that one of the biggest causes of the failure of liberal internationalism is that it became unseemly to place any moral significance on who in politics was on a foreign payroll, be they elected official, retired pol, or civil servant.

It's more than a little bizarre that the press was more vocal and judgmental about Biden's Afghanistan withdrawal than the current unscheduled rapid disassembly of our entire democracy and civil service.

If you are a liberal in deep blue territory, one thing you could try doing right now is figuring out how to replace your Democratic member of Congress next year. With very few exceptions, the typical safe seat Dem is not meeting the moment. Find someone who will and help them.

Somehow this has produced zero reflection either from Democrats or the media class about what makes something "presidency-ending," which is not the substantive severity of the scandal, but HOW OTHER ELITE POLITICAL ACTORS REACT AND TALK ABOUT IT

Republicans understand that the way to win elections is to make working-class voters feel heard about their kitchen-table economic concerns, which is why half the party is currently fixated on a fake conspiracy theory about revealing government files about a long-dead sex trafficker for rich elites

CONTAINMENT IS BREAKING I REPEAT CONTAINMENT IS BREAKING

"Nowhere in the country have rents declined as much as they have in Austin — now 22% off the peak reached in August 2023, according to Redfin. The median asking rent is $1,399 per month, down $400 in less than three years" #YIMBYworks

i am not asking you to believe in this future because it exists. i am asking you to believe in it so that it does.

most of the state being dismantled was made in a few months of work. we can just will it into being, it simply means everyone has to stop thinking it cannot happen.

the next democratic presidential nominee needs to say the precise words "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."

Reacher doesn’t fuck around with words: “Trump is a rapist and a con man, and yet the entire Christian church seems to be treat him like he’s their poster child and it’s unreal. I don’t understand it,” the actor said as an example. variety.com/2025/tv/news...

what if a man was Large and also Wise

we're in this weird cultural moment where basically if you are the kind of person who society generally respects and try to do the right thing by others, you're the punching bag for the entire political spectrum, including the sitting government and their supposedly most radical opposition

bullshit jobs was a curse

If I could blame one journalistic tic for the mess we're in, it's regarding random posts on social media as indicative of Democratic campaign strategy.

if you live in vermont, call peter welch and tell him to straighten up and get ahold of himself

there is a general centrist idea that political sacrifices by huge numbers of citizens and foreigners is obligatory, but the idea that our leaders do not own the offices to which we have appointed them is tantamount to domestic violence
