BREAKING: Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports took effect without any exemptions

BREAKING President Trump’s 25% tariffs on ALL steel and aluminum imports have just gone into effect. These tariffs are global; they are NOT focused on one or two countries.

"Top officials of our oldest allies say privately they fear that we are becoming not just unstable, but actually their enemy. The only person who gets treated with kid gloves is Putin..." www.nytimes.com/2025/03/11/o...

A lot of people who got the measles as children died or suffered lifelong disabilities as a result. The measles vaccine was a godsend to worldwide public health, and it’s an absolute scandal that this lethally ignorant dolt has any power over public health.

I just published story on secretive NYPD unit led by Eric Adams buddies Things they've done: Purposely crashed into motorcyclist, killing him Punched unarmed driver in head then kicked him Shoved a man into a car window after he protested stop WE HAVE VIDEOS www.propublica.org/article/eric...

Probably the same reason the New York Times didn't report during the campaign that Trump threatened to imprison people for criticizing the Supreme Court.

A top economics reporter goes off script on national TV: “I am going to say this at risk of my job, but what President Trump is doing is insane.”

Ten years ago if you had written a dystopian SF story in which the person in charge of U.S. public health did a press event at a fast food joint to say that fried food is good but measles vaccines cause measles the ghost of Philip K. Dick would have said that you were being too bleak and unrealistic

President Trump is suing the Pulitzer Board because it awarded its prize to the Washington Post and the New York Times for their reporting on Russian interference in the 2016 election. Today a Florida judge denied Pulitzer's bid to pause the lawsuit. Here's @oliverdarcy.bsky.social's take.

This is a very good thread, and Gavin Newsom is doing a very bad — and stupid — thing.

There’s no reason to have a Democratic Party if it won’t go to the mat to save the Department of Education. It’s a fundamental belief that children in America deserve better futures. It’s tremendously simple. You cannot continue funding a government that would close this.

Likely the first member of the Naval Academy Board of Visitors to be charged under the Espionage Act. A real breakthrough! Plus, Nauta/Nautical! Huh? Isn’t that something? www.msnbc.com/top-stories/...

I try to envision a world where I, or someone like me, could be *this* stupid and be given so much power. Unfathomable.

“People who can’t afford eggs: Buy a brand new Tesla for $129,000 to prove your patriotism!”

This is so dangerous. It’s going to kill people. It HAS killed people. It’s killing people right now. I cannot believe this

“Johns Hopkins has bet very heavily on a century and a quarter of partnership with the federal government. If the federal government decides it doesn’t want to know things anymore, that would be bad for Johns Hopkins and devastating for Maryland.”

Someone tell Fetterman that the Dems are in the minority and are incapable of shutting down the government. Thanks.

New — Absolute bloodbath at US Dept. of Education in light of today’s Reduction in Force (RIF) announcement. Hearing from department sources that offices in Dallas, Boston, New York, SF, Philly and Cleveland have all been shut down. Some staff in remaining offices fired, too.

This chart seems to suggest that something is going wrong in the United States, specifically. (www.ft.com/content/7568... )

i would be curious to know the period in american history where no one faced opprobrium for sincere beliefs

The US won the geopolitical lottery having Canada and Mexico as neighbors. This kind of offensive nonsense is doing so much damage, not just to America's standing in the world, but to our security.

When I was a kid, a lot of people had bumper stickers that read l"if you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Well, here we go!

Breaking News: The Education Department announced that it was firing more than 1,300 workers, effectively gutting the agency. The layoffs mean that the department will now have a work force of about half the size it did when President Trump took office.

NEW in @51st.news: House Republicans just voted to defund D.C. police and schools. As part of a spending bill to avert a federal government shutdown, they could force D.C. to slash $1.1 billion out of its budget, and no one understands really why. 51st.news/house-republ...

NEW: The Public Integrity Section of the Justice Department is essentially being disbanded, three sources tell NBC News. It will shrink down to a fraction of its size and become a non-litigating section.

NEWS: Omar Jadwat, the director of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, just entered an appearance representing Mahmoud Khalil in his habeas case in Manhattan.

A senior Dem aide tells me that today's caucus lunch got *very* contentious around these questions. There's clearly an intense internal debate going on right now on it.

This “investigation” is just a tweet from Musk. And two of the people mentioned here as supposedly funding the Tesla protests are dead. Herbert Sandler died in 2019 and Patricia Bauman died in 2024.

This is who they want to portray as an agent of Hamas.

Fucking hell.

Does feel like there's no more than 24 hrs left for constituents to make their views clear to senators. Get contrary signals. But the ones this afternoon make me think Senate Dems are moving into throwing up their hands mode. Seemed different this morning. Maybe playacting for constituents.

They absolutely could not possibly be clearer that they are going to try to cut Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.

GOP during the Way Back Times: “Government should not be creating winners and losers in the marketplace.” GOP now: “It’s cool if the president endorses specific companies on the South Lawn.”

this is also partially an effect of staying on X. not only are you lending your name, time, and words to Musk's political project, but you are left speaking to such a hollowed out, algorithmically sorted audience of true believers that you end up responding in good faith to the End Wokeness account

Texas Republican Keithself storms out of the meeting he's supposed to be running because a Democrat asked him to treat his colleague Sarah McBride with respect. These people would not last one day as a trans person.

look at what happens when he’s asked to defend his bigotry, not just deliver a jokey little soundbite for his fellow haters. he crumbles immediately.

More of this!

Trump: "When you take away that artificial line that looks like it was done by a ruler ... you look at that beautiful formation of Canada and the US, there is no place anywhere in the world that looks like that. And then if you add Greenland, that's pretty good."

Musk spending now up to $10.2 million. Fight back: WisDems.org/donate

Senate Democrats— A vote AGAINST the Republican CR isn’t a vote to shut down the government—they’re in charge and need your votes. But a vote FOR the Republican CR is a vote to allow Elon Musk to continue shutting down the government and nullifying the role of Congress.

This is ANOTHER partial government shutdown – coming as Republican lawmakers prepare to surrender Congress’ power of the purse to Musk & Trump. Funding for our kids’ schools is at stake, along with student loan oversight & more.

BREAKING - a bill mandating genital inspections to participate at all age levels of girls' and women's sports fails in the U.S. Senate. It needed 60 votes to move forward.

These numbers are complete lies but the underlying argument — that Democrats are paying illegal immigrants to come here and become voters — is 100% Great Replacement Theory. He’s spouting the exact same racist conspiracy that inspired mass shootings in Pittsburgh and Buffalo.

That didn't take long. Judge Beryl Howell will hold on hearing on whether to issue a TRO blocking portions of Trump's executive order targeting law firm Perkins Coie *tomorrow* (Weds.) at 2 p.m. The firm sued the Trump admin *today.*

It just seems untenable to put our biggest rubes in the highest levels of our government, but no one is stopping it.

Conservative “new masculinity” is just crybullyism, talk big shit then whine when people push back in kind bsky.app/profile/atru...

Trump is using the White House to make a commercial for the richest man in the world while Americans’ 401ks are plummeting.

I cannot believe how many Dem leaders are failing the “It is wrong to kidnap people for exercising free speech” test.
