🧵It was never going to be easy or painless to overturn decades of free-trade policies that have failed working people, but we have to think in years, not days.

So then……tax the rich? Or rather, make them pay what they owe? Discourage outsourcing of jobs? Respect unions and collective bargaining?
Nah. Slap a tariff on Canada it’s the only logical thing to do.
OMG you just gave me a eureka moment. Blue Dogs aren't fiscally responsible dems, they're economic Illiterates who don't want to tax the winners of free trade to boost up the losers by giving them access to free, high quality hc and education that would improve their lives and boost our economy
The corporate greed is enabled by the deregulation of the government, so what are you gonna do about it?
The irresponsible government spending is tax cuts for billionaires and billion dollar contracts for shitty cybertrucks, so what are you gonna do about it?
i think it's incredible a sixth grader is a sitting congressman. your family must be so proud! keep up the "good work" and eventually you'll say or do something worthwhile, maybe
It’s super sad that a US Congressman does not understand fundamental economics.
I’ve been teaching macroeconomics for ages and would love the opportunity to enlighten you.
Let me know when you’re free.
This is a loss due to corporate greed and irresponsible spending. The oligarchs paid their bribes for tax cuts and this is how they’re going to pretend to pay for them.
Define "irresponsible government spending." We know what corporate greed is, and you never supported the policies that would address it. So define the latter.
You’re an idiot dude. Trump is about to plunge us into the next Great Depression with his tariffs— incredible self-own, and it’s the working class who will suffer the most. Meanwhile Trump is literally selling off our state capacity to the billionaire class.
Putting corporate greed on equal footing with “irresponsible government spending” (which is incredibly dumb fucking thing to hear from a congressman) is incredibly disingenuous.
"That's a loss..." a loss? I barely survive on under $700 a month in SSDI. SNAP feeds me for a week. And you call it "a loss"? Like me dying from regressive economic policies is just one more "loss" to accrue...
Prices aren't going up because of corporate greed. They are going up because we've started a trade war that no one can win with an ally that has never done anything to harm us and has always done everything they could to help us.
We are not accepting lies as platitudes any longer.
Are you talking about the DOGE-slashed "irresponsible govt spending" that was fueling the economy, supporting hundreds of thousands of working families, battling infectious diseases, preventing famine, maintaining our national parks, and projecting our soft power throughout the world?
Prices will go up because of tariffs, the inevitable trade war that will result, and market friction/inefficiencies. Of course, greed and monopolies would get worse as well. Lots of reasons for hyperinflation
Prices are not going up because of corporate greed, they’re going up because we randomly betrayed long-standing trade partners and everything from Canada and Mexico now costs 25% more! Why is this hard to understand?! What about free trade, specifically, has been so bad for the American people?!
But if the price of goods is rising to facilitate the reinvigoration of American production and a transition to an economy that prioritizes domestic goods and markets, that’s a tradeoff we should consider.
"here for farmers" ok stop John Deere DRMing my fucking tractor. "here for farmers" okay stop factory farms. "here for farmers" ok enact right to repair laws. "here for farmers" legally make Fox News change it's name to Fox Entertainment if they have to argue that only idiots would believe its news
So the GOP screams about inflation and prices for a year and how bad it was, now you want inflation? Come on, we really aren’t stupid. We know higher prices is less money in our pockets, and going into someone else’s. Period!
Trump also ended Bidens pharmacy plan. Limited copay on insulin, gone, and 2000 max, gone. So in addition to more cost on most important things, seniors who need a lot of medicines are screwed. Now, further messing with Medicare and SocSec they'll really be hurting.
Trump thinks he's a genius
That's not what's going on. Stop gaslighting us. You going to start growing avocados and tomatoes in Maine in January? You going to magically create potash deposits in the USA with your magic wand? An intelligent industrial policy requires a scalpel, not a chainsaw.
A woman who raised chickens posted elsewhere that it's a crazy expensive hobby. She said, "If you want the most expensive eggs ever, then get your own chickens."
We should move workers away from producing high margin export products like robotics to producing low margin import products like potatoes. He’s a genius 😍
And the history of national strategic industrial policies is one full of expensive boondoggles. A more open market typically makes for better economic winners and winnings than government betting by picking winners and losers.
If manufacturing returns to US and companies need to pay Americans American wages aren't prices going to go up too? Cos mfg oversees because of cheap labor and less regulations. They want to bring back slave wages to the US not good jobs.
BUT IF your dear leaders are attempting to bring this country to its knees to facilitate the pieces to be sold off to oligarchs, and for us to pledge our fealty to Trump in exchange for food & shelter, that’s a trade off Americans of any generation will rise up and fight against.
WTF are you saying? This take is obnoxiously brain dead. Do you think the American people are idiots like you appear to be? We will not be bamboozled into thinking up is down & down is up! We can clearly see the shit show Trump's deliberately orchestrating to tear our country down. Stop the coverup!
Prices are going up bc you’re intentionally fucking w tariffs and all kinds of good for your friends bad for America bullshit, and you can save all this rambling nonsense for your invisible town hall, you coward
Perhaps, but it should be done with law and not extra constitutional EOs. Submit a bill, have hearings and debate. Give the people a voice as the founders intended.
This has got to be the most uneducated take I’ve ever read. Absolutely no grasp of how integrated the US dollar is with the global economy and how we’ve developed this system over the last 50 years. The system works, tax breaks for the wealthy don’t, don’t try to trick us
So, Americans will just be stuck paying higher prices until factories can be rebuilt in the next several months/ years to move production back here and then everyone will be stuck with paying even higher prices because wages and other costs are way higher here than China or Mexico. Got it.
Agencies & departments that protect employees/consumers are being decimated - NLRB, OSHA, CFPB etc. to make us powerless to predatory corporations. Cuts in social safety net will make us poorer and sicker.
We won’t be able to afford basics.
But all hail the oligarchs and their yachts and planes!
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings)
That's how life used to be back when I was a kid before the free trade agreements. Everything was expensive and there was a lot of stagflation. But apparently I'm misremembering and everything was golden. Fountains of gold for everyone.
Yep! It was fab. Most couldn’t afford an airline ticket. But camping with the family was a vacation. My mom even made our clothes and canned food because it was cheaper to do that then.
And those factories won’t be built because it won’t be economically feasible to build them here with the tariffs on the materials needed to build the factories.
#venndiagramisacircle
It’s as if folk are unable to remember why manufacturing jobs were shipped overseas in the first place. Make it make sense. Great Depression II incoming.🙄
I mean, don't get me wrong. I want more jobs for Americans too. We are still the second largest manufacturer of goods in the world after China. But to upend the economy all at once and think that this won't cause massive amounts of disruptions in supply chains/etc?
This is a really terrible take (I'm not normally a person who comments on Congress people's posts--it's just such a bad take, I genuinely felt compelled).
You are talking to people who will likely be unable to afford groceries when the impending Trump recession hits (a contraction is projected).
Canadians developed and advanced techniques in the aluminum industry that we don’t have. It will take *years* (longer than an election cycle to keep it relevant to politicians) and lots of money to catch up and create the infrastructure. That’s just one example. Sudden cutoff with no plan is stupid.
Only if the corporate interests will pay for it. It's not worth even considering is significantly more money for workers isn't being offered. If you can't understand that, it's time for you to go home and take a seat. There are worthwhile people to put in that position.
Consider your constituents you useless half man. Capitulating and working with a Russian asset to disable the USA?? You’ve broken your oath to The Constitution, Jared.
Rolling out the red carpet for economic hardship for your own people? Why are you even a Democrat? Shameful fucking coward.
This is a stupid take since we cannot possibly grow or produce everything. It will take decades to build infrastructure to produce some things and in the meantime we should pay exorbitant tariffs? Idiotic
With all do respect Congressman, I would check before drinking anymore Kool-Aid at the Congressional snack bar. Do you REALLY fantasize that MAGA has even the pipedream of a plan for “reinvigoration of American production and a transition to an economy that prioritizes domestic goods and markets??”
Same bullshit as trickle down and tax breaks for companies. “If they have more money for research and development, to invest in better/safer products blah blah then everyone wins” But they just do stock buybacks so they win. And we lose.
Back in the day of out houses, little town stores, canning for the winter, sewing all your clothes, 8+ kids per shack, no travel & not knowing beyond our borders sure. BUTT this is 2025 soon to be 2050. We can't unsee what we've seen. We are the world now. 💡🌍
Do you understand how long it takes to build steel mills and aluminum smelters and what the cost to do so is? I do. Nobody is making that investment in the US with this type of inconsistent monetary and foreign policy without significant government support.
💯 👆 and thank you for expressing this issue. Golden however is economically illiterate fool who obviously doesn’t understand (or care) that his constituents are going to spend years suffering until the next administration reverses this idiocy.
Also- imagine everything the US consumes (we are ridiculous) being produced here. We wouldn’t have any open spaces left and our air and water would be completely black and contaminated…. Since we have no environmental protections at present. Just imagine.
I was born in 1970 right about the time they started passing laws to help clean up our air and water. Most people have enjoyed the better half of a lifetime enjoying the benefits of those laws. This asshole will take us right back there, and quickly. Young people have no reference point.
And that’s assuming the tariffs actually keep those products in America. From a bottom line POV, it’s much easier and cheaper to just pass the price to consumers or find a cheaper non-tariffed (but still more expensive) exporter.
New construction + pricey labor is the LAST thing they’d do.
Hey Bill, welcome to Maine politics, a bunch of concern and bullshit, but never any meaningful actions. (I will spare Angus King, he is communicative, and using floor time to press the severity of the issues.)
I hear Jared Golden telling his constituents that he is done with public office and would like to be voted out….ASAP. So everyone help him lose his seat quickly!
I'm just going to point out that our boy Jared went from being one of Susan Collins' staffers to a seat in the Maine House.
When you realize he's never been a "dem" - never, in fact, been anything *but* Susie's little lapdog - his "choices" and "policy statements" make so much more sense.
Prove to me how slapping huge tariffs on friends will bring jobs to the US. Instead of regurgitating garbage, please help educate your constituents who believe this. Not one penny of the higher prices will help them. We'll lose jobs. Our savings will be eaten up. Get better advisors, please.
if your head is stuck so far up the Trump administration's ass that you can't see a coup when it's taking place before your very eyes, that is something your constituent should fucking consider
I thought Biden caused the economic disaster we're facing and handed it off to Trump, or so that was what he stated in the state of the union.
Trump has turned against every one of our allies and used tariffs as failed attempts at bargaining chips, along with destabilizing the economy with layoffs.
Why should peace be forced on UKRAINE?!? They were NOT the AGGRESSOR!?! WTAF already!!! Let's not forget we signed an agreement in 1994 to protect them after the USSR fell.
And then we started giving more and more tax breaks and other assorted bullshit that people like you were in full support of. Think Clinton signing the legislation that tanked our economy in the 00s.
Financial crisis of 2008 was all Bush. Major financial institutions teetered on the edge of collapse, and many businesses failed. Bush bailed out the banks and left the individual homeowner holding the debt. Republican’s keeping the middle class in servitude to the billionaire class.
Bush did panic and threw money at the problem but there are only a few people that still believe that Bush was to blame. Even far left Sanders has blamed Clinton for the policies that sold the American people out to Wall Street
They will, to an extent. But retaliatory tariffs will make sure there are no winners. Basically trump is banking on the US being the biggest consumers on the planet but if the economy receeds. We'll see but I think this is really bad
You make a tarrif when there's resources to replace the ones you disincentivizing. Show me the facilities in America ready in the next 2 months to start producing steel in the quantities needed to combat the slowdown the current tarrifs will bring.
Fucking brilliant! Force a company to spend $2 billion to build a domestic plant! I'm sure they won't pass THAT expense on to the consumer either. Not to mention the tariffs that still would exist on raw materials.
As your constituent, I have to say this makes no fucking sense. You don't see how a trade war with our allies benefits nobody but our enemies? And you're a veteran?
You are a fraud! Can’t wait until someone makes an AI video of you sucking Trumps toes while Trump sucks Elon’s toes. I bet you are paying $5 million to go to Mar-a-Lago to have dinner with Trump you weird freak.
None of that is going to happen. There will be like 10 guys that own everything, and we'll all be shopping at the company store. Stop drinking the GD koolaid. They're LYING to you.
Oh bullshit. There aren't enough US alternatives to the things we import to make that work. The ones that exist will be overloaded by demand, driving prices and shortages up.
Subsidies are a concept that you can literally just use, ya know. You can literally keep prices low and onshore strategic industries with subsidies rather than tariffs. Well, maybe not while also funding more unnecessary tax cuts to large businesses and billionaires...
That is absolute BS! Sucking $ out of every US consumer to enrich 34-felon & his buddies (aka national sales tax) it *not* going to strengthen the economy! It's going to make the rich richer and the poor poorer/sicker/weaker which weakens the very foundation of the entire country/economy/markets!
What domestic goods and markets? We live in a society that glorified the white collar careers so much that we now lack true skilled labor. And unskilled as well, since CEOs have spent decades shopping their factories overseas. The US factories died out through sheer greed.
We would need countless resources, funds and decades to rebuild what has been dismantled. But what do I know? I only live in a rural area that used to have factories in every town and now, only one remains and it's on its way down the drain. When it goes, not one, but several towns lose livelihood
Found the idiot who doesn’t see “15 pairs of tube socks at Walmart for $8.99” is because offshore manufacturing drives US consumer spending. Do you want sweatshop jobs in the U.S., or everything to cost 5x what it does now? Pick your poison.
Way to be a traitor. You might was well become a Republican. Your economic theories are pretty damn stupid. I can show you a market that was exactly what you profess to want. Look at the USSR in the 1980's. That is exactly the economy you are pushing for. Shortages and lesser quality. It's coming.
Garbage like this is why no one should listen to milquetoast Dems like yourself and MGP. You’re trying to sane wash the economic policies of a man who couldn’t give one solitary fuck about the working class. Tariffs are nothing but a tax on the American consumer. Delete this trash!!!
can we PLEASE start calling it a TRUMP TAX - because it seems tariff is too complicated a concept for a lot of americans. But that's what it is... a Trump Tax. All together now... Trump Tax... louder for the magas in the back TRUMP TAX!!!!
How can you be this economically illiterate. Go read about the great depression and its root causes, then resign so an actual democrat can take your place.
There are ways to go about this that don't involve no plan, and a sledgehammer and upturning and/or destroying millions of people's lives and hopes of retirment and security. Fuck all the way off man...ALL THE WAY.
That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Companies will not bring production back because it is too expensive to make things in America. You must think people are STUPID.
Not to mention the 🤡 cannot be trusted to make an honest deal. Who in their right mind would trust america at this point? No sane foreign trading partner would offer more than they could lose... The entire world knows the US can't be trusted. I hear Moscow is pretty in summer...
Congresspeople should be required to take a course in economics. Your statement shows extreme ignorance. The theory of comparative advantage is over 200 years old. It is basic econ. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparative_advantage
Oh yes. The US conveniently spends and doesn't save, but then blames the rest of the world. They also conveniently leave out services as part of calculations of trade balance where they excel. You could, I don't know, just raise taxes. But no. That's the boogey man. Blame everyone else instead.
The US deficit includes services and it is still huge.
They have essentially sponsored global production with their consumption and open market, something that has not been reciprocated.
Any mechanism that reduced their deficit would have the same impact as a tariff.
So we the working class taxpayers get to foot the bill twice. Once with tax credits to help the means of production build and equip the infrastructure and again by having to spend more just to buy necessities. And what of the top 1% tax cuts that we don’t get to share in again.
Corporate greed is why CEOs like Elon shutdown US factories and built elsewhere. After getting the king's permission to poison the water, air, and soil; exploit workers into illness and early death; pay them poverty wages for skilled work..., increased US production will still be behind China
Market correction might be a good thing if you don't consider how many people will die - Says man who will not be affected at all by the market correction and with free healthcare
PRICES HAVE BEEN UP. ,& were coming down before you self serving GOP decided to approve every unqualified Cabinet Member that Mad King wanted for 1 reason. Loyal to the King!!!!!!
Prices are going up because Trump is imposing a new tax (tariff) on Americans. If it was cheaper to make it in the USA businesses would already be doing it. Because they are not idiots and they know that a less expensive and reliable source odd raw materials is good for them and America.
The fix to both of these problems you pretend to care about is raising taxes on the ultra-wealthy, then they can't raise prices out of greed and the spending is covered.
“If you think about it, fascism is okay because you were already being ripped off by corporations instead of the government” is one hell of a dangerous (and overtly fascist) take.
Everything Trusk does is to benefit the extremely wealthy. He's fine w/ corp. greed. Shifting contracts to Starlink is corruption. Elsewhere you advocate for VA services. They are essential but some think that's irresponsible spending. You may not be aware of rationales for some other govt spending.
So maybe we ought to look into corporate greed and how we can counter that so the American people don't take the loss. How about that for an idea instead of adding to the losses that the American people will have to take due to tariffs?
I’m not sure what irresponsible government spending you are referring to but do include Presidential lies, belligerence, ignorance and determination to apply tariffs without thought?
What government spending are you talking about here? Be specific, do you mean defense, or social services your constituents depend on? Otherwise you're just carrying water for the right.
You’re totally serious here, aren’t you? How many cash-strapped months or yrs do you think the avg middle-class family has before they fall below the poverty line? As colleges, homes, healthcare, food, energy ⬆️ and wages stay stagnant or ⬇️ bc ppl are laid off? How many months before catastrophe?
Completely agree. I used to be a skeptic of things like free trade agreements, cross-border customs free zones and such, but the data shows they work to grow national income and national wealth better than any alternative. Marry it with a smarter taxation policy on big income & big capital owners.
Overturning 2 centuries of a democratic government with checks and balances seems to go just fine. And alienating your allies you've done in record time. Well done America!
People don't have years. Especially those in Maine facing higher electricity/fuel prices. You're obviously not thinking of the people you serve and should step down. May protesters turn up for you as they did for Vance in VT.
I know a lot of people are going to say this, but I want you to know that they're right. You're a spineless piece of shit. Just a vapid husk of a person. Real disappointment to the human race sort of thing.
Planes are falling out of the sky, there are outbreaks of measles & dysentery, snap & social security are on the block. This administration isn’t trying to make things fairer for working people, they're robbing/killing the rest of us to shovel cash at billionaires.
Hey Listen up #Maine JaredTrumperPutin is posting today saying TrumpDictatorship is good for us and everyone should be thankful for losing their freedoms and for Russia to control the United States. Jared believes that betraying ALLIES will MAGA Hey, thanks for confirming MAGAJAREDGOLDEN
Oh, the brexit people tell us that Iver here too. It's so they have something to come back with when we say it hasn't worked. "Oh, it's going to take a long time." No, mate, it isn't going to work.
Free trade has not failed. The standard of living has risen across the world and US consumers have access to more goods and services to ever before. What hasn't worked well since the Reagan Revolution is how the bounty gets distributed. Income inequality is at historic levels. Billionaires now ....
...control the government and fire federal employees at will. They need to be taxed such that they can't just buy their way into the government. It needs to happen soon so that the authoritarian track we are headed down is blocked.
Mostly here for the ratio but…
Jared spent way to much time at the Fox News kool-aid fountain in the barracks and while working for Susan Collins. Bro is a Manchurian candidate, Semper Fi Jared
Echos of Dannie Goeb (aka Tx Lt. Gov, Baltimore born, erstwhile talk show host, mouth breather & all around corporate embed Dan Patrick) telling me should I should volunteer to die from COVID mismanagement for the good of the economy.
Don't forget, this is the guy who had that op/ed piece in the BDN last July where he said Trump would win and he's okay with that. Then he went on to call those of us who were concerned "pearl-clutchers."
“Easy or painless” my god the fucking nerve on you. You won’t feel a thing you’ll draw your government paycheck while you stomp on the faces of the people that make it possible.
I genuinely mean this with all my heart: go fuck yourself congressman. There is a warm space in hell reserved for you.
I assure you I’d be much happier discussing pleasant things going on in government in a pleasant tone with civil discussion befitting our democracy but an unelected, drug addicted, foreign billionaire is destroying the federal government and jackass Jared is HELPING HIM JUSTIFY IT! Madness!!
It wasn’t the “free trade policies” that failed working people, you stupid fuck; those have largely resulted in increased prosperity for working people across the globe, including working Americans.
It was how that prosperity was distributed that was (and is) the problem.
Given that actual manufacturers as opposed to cosplaying idiots like Matt Stoller are telling you tariffs destroy their business, do you think now might be a good time to revisit this nonsense? Particularly now that the Trump Tax applies to your constituents' electrical bills but not other imports?
you are a moron. the only thing that will happen if we close our markets is that prices will go up and STAY up. Please please have one of your staffers explain basic econ to you.
You just had a President in office for four years who went about the process of changing industrial policy in a constructive way, not through petulant brain farts like "I'm gonna tax Canadian imports up the wazoo because 2 kilos of fentanyl crossed the border!"
it will always be years with this attitude. in 3 years? years from now, but close. ten years? oh we're gonna show them in a couple of years. weird freak behavior. the great minds who brought you "let's not codify roe v. wade and use it as an election goad" are at it again
I read it as sympathy for the poor intern. Like "damn, you have a puke for a boss. That sucks and I'm sorry you've gotta deal with your livelihood being contingent on a person who can't operate a sandwich".
As a Mainer living in Europe let me try to help you understand. American quality of life problems are entirely the fault of Americans and not that of Canada or any other allies. The solution is to raise taxes on the top 1% to fund affordable American education, healthcare, and transportation.
@golden.house.gov destroying our alliances with tariffs is a dangerous path to self-destruction. Our allies are not at fault for our wealth disparities. It'll take you 3 minutes to read this post from @dow.bsky.social on the structural change in the economy. http://behavioralmacro.com/asset-shortages-and-income-inequality/
Well I still need to do my master’s degree here, where no surprise, education is free and publicly well funded. I do miss home though, so maybe in some years I will bring some of those ideas from Europe.
Boeing Nearly $16 billion since 2000.
Intel More than $8 billion since 2000.
Tesla approx $2.7 billion in 2024 alone!
Tesla undisclosed amounts for Gigafactories Texas/Nevada, & specific grants and abatements around $330 million from Nevada
Amazon approx $11.6 billion in 2024
This motherfucker. You think that’s what they’re doing?? They are RAIDING the treasury and setting up financial collapse so they can benefit, not overturning ill-advised policy. Get your head out and help Mainers!!!!!
It's true they've been told exactly what would happen by MAGA, but your average red voter didn't believe it or were given half truths and obfuscations the whole time through by their information silos. I don't exactly pity them for their stupidity, but they're now seeing the hurt to themselves now.
And now the blatant raiding of taxpayers money and screwing them over is more obvious than ever. Plenty of die hards that will still rationalize it, but there's already a lot pushing back on the practices now.
My hope is not them voting blue but not voting for these ghouls in midterms and sit out.
I get that you have to do the MAGA dance to not lose your job, but Mainers are more capable of trade nuance than you give them credit for. Most free trade helps most people. Instead of trashing the greater good, help those who are harmed. Google "Kaldor-Hicks" please. FAST.
Hey. So. Have you ever been poor? Because it’s really not a thing we can do. Think in years? Half the time we can’t think in days. We struggle to know what’s going to be on the table *in hours*. This is such a trumpian take.
As a constituent, I think this is a really strange basket for all of your eggs.
And if you're doing this to win votes from moderate voters, many will be pushed into unemployment and poverty before Maine sees any meaningful manufacturing gains (if we do at all).
This isn't just a critique of Democrats and Trump, either. Cost of living issues have been severe in the US for two decades now. Housing most of all. And at a state and city level, Democrats are part of the problem, fighting dense housing and not fighting hard enough for mass transit, for example.
Shit, you have Phil Murphy pandering to Trump to cancel congestion pricing. Democrats have a cowardice issue when it comes to cost of living. You're so afraid of a backlash from suburban voters that you don't fight for your base. And those suburban voters desert you for Republicans anyway.
The reason people have no confidence in Dems is because ultimately you guys don't stick to your guns. You'll shiv your best members fighting for seniority in Congress and primaries, and then when it comes to Republicans, you're mewling losers. Grow a spine, and people might actually listen to you.
They stick to their guns just fine; it's just that the guns are in the hands of Pinkertons, pointed at workers who dare to think they deserve a fair shake.
Yes, that too, for a lot of Dems. Workers, protestors, transgender people, a lot of state violence aimed at parts of their own coalition. There are some good people, though. We have to speak to them, too, because many of them are not showing up, either.
Trade policies didn't fail working people. What failed us was that the GOP and reactionary centrists like you allowed the 1% to steal the benefits of those trade policies via massive high-end tax cuts instead of reinvesting them in the US and opportunities for working people./
And your answer for working people is to raise prices, create a recession, and make us suffer for a few more years with no real certainty that we will be better off or that the benefits of your imagined new economy won't be stolen by the 1% again. Screw.
Too long have we waited for our own Great Leap Forward! My family does not desire wealth or food, only domestically produced consumer goods! Long live Chairman Mao! Long live God Emperor Trump!
It was never going to be easy for China to beat their own internal demographics challenge. But the US stepped up and did whatever it took to make sure they'd win geopolitically and economically. I hope China is grateful down the road.
You should donate 100% of your salary to Mainers who are suffering now under this stupid trade war. Sell your assets and donate that money, too. You might miss your stuff temporarily but you have to think in years, not days.
What is wrong with you? Tariffs are stupid, plain and simple. Economists nearly unanimously oppose them. They are a tax on the American people, especially working people.
You are a triangulating shitbag. Stand up for the people of Maine. You weren’t elected to sit around and let a criminal keep stealing power and breaking laws. Start talking impeachment or STFU.
Okay, buddy. I’m so looking forward to the pain of being penniless & homeless when our former great economy crashes because of the stupidity of the roaches in the White House. Whoopee, we’re all gonna die!
Advocating for an isolationist policy that immediately and significantly harms your constituents while also demonstrating your support for the felon President and his South African apartheid nepo baby Vice President that are openly siding with war criminal Putin is a heck of a way to ruin a career.
We were at max employment before these new Trump policies went into affect. We are going to have a recession with massive unemployment and spiking inflation due to these policies. That’s not what’s good for workers. I hope you get primaried out-of-office.
You think the tariff’s aren’t a direct result of corporate influence in policymaking, that’s been the driver of most of our government’s problems for 3 or 4 decades?
Okay. Sure. “We must take this definitely necessary step to fix the problems caused by the donations we’re trying not to step on.”
You're kissing the ass of a billionaire as he illegally and unconstitutionally take over and ruin our country. Your craven greed has no bounds, you spineless toady.
Hey, Representative Dipshit, have you checked in with your constituents to see if they’re okay paying inflated energy prices for years because the President wanted to play tough guy?
Asking for a few hundred thousand people who you seem to have ignored.
They can’t read his dumb takes because Canada shut off their electricity and their phones died. But I’m sure they love having a congressman who is promoting a trade war with their neighbors
Congressman, if these free-trade policies have “failed working people,” where’s the clear evidence? Blanket statements don’t justify tariffs that could raise costs for those same workers. “Thinking in years” is fine, but bad policy doesn’t improve with time—it just lingers and does more damage.
If we can 'bear those costs' why is it beyond the pale that the minimum wage ever be raised, right?
Assholes like this Congressman only ask us to tighten our belts when it's because their donors walked off with the main course and left us with crusts.
Everything he does is done out either his own self-interest or for those who are pulling the strings. I wrote an article about who’s pulling the strings in the White House.
I would be interested in your feedback.
The largest tariff increase since Smoot-Hawley. So Congressman, when are we going to see these gains? After a second depression or after another world war?
Comments
You might want to read up on them
Nah. Slap a tariff on Canada it’s the only logical thing to do.
This is insanity. Biden was bringing back factories and production without causing this pain. Without alienating the free world.
This is an insanely tone deaf post
It’s just like Russia, in power for decades but still blaming woke liberalism or some other phantom enemy.
The irresponsible government spending is tax cuts for billionaires and billion dollar contracts for shitty cybertrucks, so what are you gonna do about it?
Then explain to us how Maine wasn't a part of the booming economy over most of the last 4 years, and whose fault it was if that was the case.
Basically “it’s not MY fault if capitalism will capitalism.”
Wake up.
I’ve been teaching macroeconomics for ages and would love the opportunity to enlighten you.
Let me know when you’re free.
If you really served, you should be ashamed of such retroactive rationalization. You have no honor.
"A 2023 report estimated that National Parks generated more than $55bn in economic impact off of a budget of $3.6bn."
The Federal Gov't has done more, with less, for 35 years (the number of employees peaked in 1990).
You’re an idiot dude. Trump is about to plunge us into the next Great Depression with his tariffs— incredible self-own, and it’s the working class who will suffer the most. Meanwhile Trump is literally selling off our state capacity to the billionaire class.
Thank you for coming to my dissertation defense.
hint: it's not the company
We are not accepting lies as platitudes any longer.

this guy is a DEMOCRAT
Is he just too inexperienced to realize how serious things are?
he is 42 years old; if he doesn't know how serious things are by now, he should not be in a position to affect legislation of this country
Good luck with that
Trump thinks he's a genius
I mean, you don’t have to say anymore.
Really.
1100 to... 16.
Repulsive.
Except they lopped off the "for less" part, thinking they could pull one over on voters.
Consider that.
He's fucking stupid.
shut the fuck up
The next best time is now.
us shits gonna have no consumer protection, no corporate oversight
#buylocal
#buycanadian #buymexican
with what workers? what happens in the interim?
you should probably consider just walking into the woods forever
It also seems like you are letting Elon/DOGE do some “dirty work” yall have always been afraid of (ie Social Security and Medicare/Mediaid).
You are a sycophantic piece of shit and I hope your constituents see that!
We won’t be able to afford basics.
But all hail the oligarchs and their yachts and planes!
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

It’s as if folk are unable to remember why manufacturing jobs were shipped overseas in the first place. Make it make sense. Great Depression II incoming.🙄

Step 1. Price of goods goes up.
Step 2. Shareholders and CEOs walk off with the money.
The End.
You are talking to people who will likely be unable to afford groceries when the impending Trump recession hits (a contraction is projected).
But I am not sure you know what a ratio is given the absolute ignorance you are showing.
~ pissed off option
Rolling out the red carpet for economic hardship for your own people? Why are you even a Democrat? Shameful fucking coward.
FUCK YOU.
New construction + pricey labor is the LAST thing they’d do.
Someone primary this collaborator.
I hate it here.
When you realize he's never been a "dem" - never, in fact, been anything *but* Susie's little lapdog - his "choices" and "policy statements" make so much more sense.
Two things can be true at once. ;3
Trump has turned against every one of our allies and used tariffs as failed attempts at bargaining chips, along with destabilizing the economy with layoffs.

See, what happened is, in the 80s, politicians allowed American companies to produce their products elsewhere & broke unions.
Then, in the 90s, NAFTA turned that into a wildfire to make cheap shit.
Also, the prosperity after WW2 was in large part because of 2 things:
Unions (which the Kennedys started eroding due to "the mob")
and
Taxing the rich.

The same people who want "good jobs" in America.
So... 🤷
Duly noted.
And just like that, a political career died...
"How much are eggs today, Mom?"
"Trumpteen dollars, my son."
"Holy Gulf of Mexico, Mom! Why'd anyone vote for that?"
"They are idiots, son."
The US has run a trade deficit for 40+ years, largely with debt.
This the consequence of political choices, not free trade (US laissez-faire vs mercantile China).
They have essentially sponsored global production with their consumption and open market, something that has not been reciprocated.
Any mechanism that reduced their deficit would have the same impact as a tariff.

And we don’t need f’n sarcasm from our elected officials right now.
Have you talked with competent economists on this?
Causes of inflation:
✔️Corporate Greed
❌Government Spending
It's Trump's.
Get fucked.
And it's going to be glorious when you get primaried and lose.
this is INSANITY
Now he's at it again.
They love the scent of eugenics in the morning
You are not a serious person.

The Nazis are in charge.
There is no good faith from this administration.
If you don’t understand those four things, resign and get the fuck out of the way for someone who does.
Perfect response.
Wouldn't your Trumpiest constituents like the USMCA when you remind them Trump did it, who is this statement for lol
He honestly has been waiting for high tariffs. These are not "political" tweets. This is what he actually thinks.

I genuinely mean this with all my heart: go fuck yourself congressman. There is a warm space in hell reserved for you.
I hate this might be seen as me supporting a right wing tool like Jared, but I wish people would stop propagating this misinformation.

It was how that prosperity was distributed that was (and is) the problem.
Maybe take a page from that guy

My hope is not them voting blue but not voting for these ghouls in midterms and sit out.
Resign.
As a constituent, I think this is a really strange basket for all of your eggs.
And if you're doing this to win votes from moderate voters, many will be pushed into unemployment and poverty before Maine sees any meaningful manufacturing gains (if we do at all).
So frustrated.
We're all thinking in years, both past and future
What we don't understand is why you guys are so feckless and useless today. You've got no urgency, so step down if you'll never have it

Okay. Sure. “We must take this definitely necessary step to fix the problems caused by the donations we’re trying not to step on.”
Asking for a few hundred thousand people who you seem to have ignored.
Assholes like this Congressman only ask us to tighten our belts when it's because their donors walked off with the main course and left us with crusts.
I would be interested in your feedback.
