TBF, 2012 was during the Ratzinger era (AKA Pope Benedict) and he was ALWAYS an anti-queer hardliner who did not brook dissent. Ratzinger used to head the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (what used to be the Inquisition) and loved to persecute gay people. Enforcing doctrine was his jam.

In fairness, the most recent quotes from him on queer people I could find were from 2012 and they were relatively mild by high-ranking RCC folks stance. Not great, but better than some of the worst case scenarios I was expecting to happen.
To be clear, I'm queer, not Catholic, and not a fan of the Vatican. I'm just saying that it's theoretical possible that he'll shove the glacier slightly further in the direction of progress overall, and that I'm relieved one of the worst case scenarios didn't happen.
