Yeah, I think Fredo wasn't actually a disappointment to his father, because his father didn't think he was cut out for it to begin with. Sonny was a disappointment because he could've been capable but couldn't keep his temper under control.
He speaks out of turn against his father in the meeting with Sollozo, which gives Sollozo the idea to take out Vito to move Sonny into the leadership position because Sonny can be manipulated.
The son in The Brutalist — a guy who's every bit as evil as his father, but doesn't even have his mad vision/desire to make something, just spends his whole day staring at spreadsheets.
He does eventually make up for it, but let's not forget that his twin sister was an accomplished politician managing a double life as both a senator and a spy for the rebellion and he was still farting around doing fuck-all on his uncle's farm. Literally only got involved by happenstance.
- Nick Stahl's character in Sin City (and if I'm being honest, his character in Terminator: Rise of the Machines)
- Kale in The Sword in the Stone (if you consider Ector's status as the knighted earl of a fiefdom to be an accomplishment)
I know there's got to be some from martial arts and/or Jidaigeki films-filial piety makes for harsh expectations and all that- but I'm drawing a blank on specific examples.
This is after racking up a body count more than twice what Hammond had in the first movie, fuck, depending on how many people died in the fall of Jurassic world, he may very well have the single highest body count in the series
(This is true! Nuka’s got one resentful offscreen line snarling about how Kovu was “just taken in” - presuming someone behind the scenes hit the brakes on the implied lions-being-lions and just had to make SURE Kovu was no blood relation whatsoever! )
Alfie Allen has a knack for playing failsons and I think it’s because he can tap into his experience of having his sister write a whole song about how much of a failbrother he was
I mean, not only was he a kid, but he did off himself. Like, I hated him, but I'm not sure if I'd call him a failson. Maybe if he lived a little longer.
Maybe I need to rewatch that movie, it's been a minute.
I dunno, even she kinda weaselled her way into her father’s business and didn’t really do anything to make it bigger. Not to mention she still threatened marta multiple times so she still kinda counts as a faildaughter
I like that Curtis kind of played herself in that movie. She was an accomplished professional BUT she got her start through family connections even if she denies it made a difference. It did
Ohhhh, this is a literary failson and a cinema failson, but definitely Boromir. He did redeem himself, though, in the film, his death did cause Denethor to eat tomatoes like a weirdo. Poor Sean Bean.
He asked his favorite Boromir to get the ring for him, setting him up for failure, and he asked his less favorite Faramir to do an attack destined to fail
Great answer, my only caveat is I feel like a true failson (or faildaughter) has to have a great parent whose achievements cast a dark shadow over his lack of. Insofar as being sheriff is an accomplishment, I feel Smokey's son is too dumb to even try to emulate his dad
Another great answer. I worry Alfie Allen has been typecast. (I am unclear if Theon Greyjoy counts as a failson only because his own father's record of accomplishments is suspect)
One could disqualify Commodus since he did successfully become emperor (by force!), but he absolutely fits the three major criteria: 1) he's a massive disappointment to his father, because 2) he could never achieve what his father did, because 3) he, personally, sucks
Given that his sister* once wrote a song about how much of a fucking loser he was, and it charted, I'm not sure it was 'typecasting' so much as 'drawing on his lived experience'.
*Yes I know we're not talking about failbrothers but their dad is famous too so it counts.
borderline. he certainly is a useless rich kid but i feel like a true failson also has to be a disappointment to his parents and is also of poor character that will not dissipate with age

He's the ultimate Faison.
He speaks out of turn against his father in the meeting with Sollozo, which gives Sollozo the idea to take out Vito to move Sonny into the leadership position because Sonny can be manipulated.
Then gets himself killed after the fact.
Everyone knows Frankie is the ultimate Faison.
The Lion in Winter
Sorry don't remember characters name
Fiction: chiken little.
- Kale in The Sword in the Stone (if you consider Ector's status as the knighted earl of a fiefdom to be an accomplishment)
and Geoffrey.
even Richard, kindof.
(Adopted kid defects, of course, but, really, Nuka doesn't have a character outside of failson.)
Maybe I need to rewatch that movie, it's been a minute.
