My unpopular take: this case is actually a triumph of the rule of law.
An incredibly powerful man with effectively infinite wealth was tried and convicted of felonies, despite massive pressure from other powerful people.
It’s not the legal system’s fault that the US then elected him President.

President-elect Donald Trump received no jail time, fines or probation at his sentencing on Friday after being convicted in May of 34 felonies related to hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels. bit.ly/4h8JtF4

The law took the conviction given by a jury of peers and effectively tore it up.
The American people said Trump isn't above the law. The court said Trump is.
It’s in no way “right”. It would be amazing if it set a precedence for other non-violent crimes like drug possession (if that’s still a crime in NY).
The USA and democracy are less for it.
We lost.
Do I think he is Constitutionally ineligible to hold office? Yes.
Do I think there was a miscarriage of justice in the other cases? Yes.
In the hush money case, what I'd like is different than what must be.
But for a fair chunk of of the public, it’s of a piece with all the other legitimacy-destroying stuff we now see weekly, and makes it seem as though the law is for credulous chumps.
"its impractical to imprison him" how is that our problem?! "dont do the crime if you cant do the time" is how it works for the rest of us
Just for kicks and grins, what if he did order prison? You think orange guy was ever going to see the inside of a cell? But hey, at least Juan did his job, right? Leave it to some other judge.
I am perplexed that the Harris Walz campaign along with every surrogate possible didn’t scream about Trump being a felon, a criminal and a sexual abuser. Every damn day.
Two tiered justice leads to wild west justice.
We used to be a country of laws, now we're a country of rich men who can break those laws with impunity, and without meaningful consequence.
Well, she cooked.
The top court of our legal system failed on this easiest of cases.
even if he pardons himself in a couple weeks, the act of saying he committed a crime and will not be punished is just legal theatre to fool the rubes
It is exactly what the founders were most afraid of. So no, it is not a triumph -- it is another sign of us whimpering our way to fascism.
why did he not get the same punishment as Micheal Cohen?
the not elected president part should not be the difference.
This is not some triumph for our legal system.
People are paying so much more for doing so much less.
Immense privilege let this outcome drag into 2025, post-election, when there was zero ability for any accountability
>>> What is the POINT of the judicial system if it doesn't enact consequences? <<<
Is it just to make everyone feel better?
rather, just not the _punishment_ you might prefer.
No punishment, no rehabilitation, no societal change --> no point
What scenario were you picturing that we avoided?
They have ignored the existing sentencing standards and in so doing they have imperiled the numerous *other* convictions and sentences under these same statutes.
Also: A huge middle finger to the jury.
The system working on paper, but not delivering a punishment to deter more crime, is the failure.
he just wasn't _punished_ as one might prefer
I wish someone would better clarify that.

If Roberts and Barrett are going to implement their desired rules for America, including a national abortion ban, Trump must do what THEY want, not just grift.
I'm intrigued.
So, hard for me to agree the legal system writ large worked. I’d say it’s a very mixed bag but working portions are impressive.
Hoping they’ll feel bad isn’t the same as a consequence.
everything was done to not upset his schedule.
the convictions were meant to shut us up.
lack of punishment was meant to appease him.
