The computer crapped itself as soon as I hit the VIC option. They’re getting rid of it next year, so they told me not to stress over it anymore. They were just trying to get a month or 2 usage out of it beforehand.
The typing problems are due to the protective cover being so old and rigid (though probably not much better when new, it looks pretty thick), plus any dust inside the keyboard could be causing the keys to stick. Sadly removing the cover will destroy the keyboard because of the dust.
No, it's being used in an dusty ass autobody shop, from the looks of it. The dust and dirt has coated the protective cover and the yellowing from age has made it rigid.
More worrying is the standards of safety poster on the wall which looks old enough to be from the era that steeplejacks walked freely 1000ft high without harnesses
Depends on whether it's connected to specialized hardware (for example, interfaces that the new hardware doesn't even have anymore), and if passing it through to the VM works if it exists.
But yes, if you can virtualize it and if it's worth keeping it running in the first place, put it into a VM.
I had to fix a windows XP box the other day too. For a car alignment system. Prescot P4 with a bad IDE HDD. Mobo with blown caps. Imaged HDD to SATA, chkdsk, sfc, reset storage controller in reg and injected driver, put it on a 2nd gen i5 pc. All working and happy! SMH, the crap we run into.
I wouldn't do to much to that thing. I would try to back up all of the data on it, and ensure there's hard copies of their apps. XP made it to Service Pack 3. But, if they're only wanting a couple more months out of that thing. Just use enough duct tape to get it through.
Locking up from heat, most likely. Based on the dust and shit caked on everything around it, I imagine the heat sinks in it are solid. Take it outside and blow it out. Wear a mask unless you want mummy rot or some shit.
You tried admin or Admin? What's the make of the machine or if it's hand built which motherboard?
lol if you don't care it's all good. Just like helping people look like magicians at work. However, if you fix it, they will come dude. You'll ALWAYS be the guy
My first job outta college was working as a computer operator in the early 80s. We shared workstations. Several people used to eat fried chicken everyday. They would type on the keyboards with greasy hands. All the keyboards had to be replaced every 3 months. They were downright nasty.
Ha! This makes me wonder something though.
Think the motherboard of my Mediacenter computer died ages ago (it won't boot). If I pull the HD to try to get any data files off it, would I have better luck hooking it up to the newer Windows 10 or the older XP?
So much old shop equipment still uses old computers. I know one that operates off of 95. They have software that they paid for and dammit they are getting their moneys worth.
I was doing a cleanup and found an old P3 500mhz laptop with Windows XP on it. The ram was 128mb edo (2 x 64mb). I put it on a local for sale site with "make an offer". A person immediately offered $75 and said they needed it because of the ports it had for their garment manufacturing business.
We had a business customer bring in a Windoze 98 computer for us to fix, if runs a special machine in his workshop and it would cost him too much to change,he said "whatever it costs just do it"
Looks like it has a protective cover to prevent it from being damaged by all the dust in the area. However the protective cover is yellowing and extremely dirty.
Manufacturing and factory PCs are insane. As long as they are not hooked up to the internet, they can run for decades. In 2019 I was asked to repair a PC that was hooked up to a medical device that tested blood samples. The PC was using Windows 95.
Yup. The only problems come when you give it internet access and the users start browsing. I did a consulting job for a company replacing their POTS with VOIP and they were still using terminal PCs with a central server using BASIC for their POTS system.
If you could hook me up with a slipstreamed WinXP SP3 installation CD, or better yet the SP4/POS ready update, with DirectX 9.0 I would owe you a service. I’d love to play my old games again over the winter.
It's probably running the one integral part of software that someone build 25(?) years ago and the last 3 people they hired to understand the code all had to give up.
I meant it more as in with the amount of dust and muck all over that shit, can't be good :D Also if it runs XP I hope it's not connected to the internet :D
Looks like you got it in an area with a lot of dust. I'd suggest opening it up and trying to vacuum it out, excessive dust inside a pc can create many problems. Beyond that, well it looks like it should have been updated/upgraded a decade ago.

It’s up and running for what they need it to do and not locking up. Who knows for how long tho lol
Runs much better on old PCs.

1: Always refill the carbide in your headlamp before entering.
2: Canaries are required to be MSHA certified.
3: All associates are required to be at least 12 years of age, or carry a signed waiver from at least one parent.

there is an old offline database that is running windows nt

*Looks inside*
*It's the computer I used in high school*
the sage:
A. The bathroom floor
B. That keyboard
It would be a tough choice.
(and jesus prolly used this computer, too, gah damn)
Look at the dust on that thing!
For the software, not really surprised.

As is happens, i'm running windows XP right about now, in a virtual machine on my mac mini. Because sometimes you have to play that old game from 1995

wwworks just fine
It's a ChromeOS that you can install on older hardware and its light and fast making it basically a Chromebook.
