Do people actually want foldable phones or tablets? I've seen more talk about them lately, probably because Apple seems to be keen to get in on this after all these years, but... every one I've seen has looked like a flimsy piece of junk? I guess I just don't see the appeal.

The fold isn't really an issue, you get used to it pretty quickly.
I don't have much use for them because they're not water resistant and I'm both clumsy and forgetful.
Something a little smaller/lighter would be welcome but...☹️
I use my phone to multitask a *lot*, plus the additional real estate when reading emails or updating my calendar is super nice
I'd like a thing where I have two big phones and I can press them together to make a tablet with one big screen, for watching videos.
All it ever does is look like it's gonna snap as soon as it drops
That's not a good enough use case for their price
Bring back fun innovation in tech, even if it's flimsy and a bit broken.
But they just don’t hold up. The screens are way too soft for a full, long term device. They would need to be a serious breakthrough on screen technology for them to be anything but a neat curiosity.
On the other hand, my dad always had Samsung Notes because he couldn't use the buttons on regular-sized smartphones, so maybe it helps in that regard?
But its more likely just, 'hey people are bored of the same old shit, lets spice things up'.
Everybody keeps saying "i thought it was a gameboy in your hand" and everytime it makes her day
I don't see the appeal but others do.
I have no upgrade path because all other folding phones have flimsy, easily damaged screens.
Half a pocket, half a phone 🤷♀️
All the foldable ones are way too big when unfolded to comfortably use as phone
Iphone 14 now?
But all we do is buy the ENTIRE device over and over again, while only 2% is changed!
WE fought so hard back in the days for OPEN source! Like pc! soundcard, videocard, harddive and so on. You buy what you need.
I just miss when phones were quirky. anything but a rectangle please.
But, it broke from a VERY short fall. Grrr. So now I carry a Unihertz Jelly Star, and I love it even more!! It does everything I need it to do and fits in any pocket. 💪
Foldable phones are an old idea. Apparently the first concept foldable phones were from Nokia in 2008. And we've had commercially available ones since 2018.
But when Apple get into it, suddenly people are interested...
But a crinkly plastic screen is a deal breaker, as is a second rate camera.
I would pay for a thick phone with a stacked M43 sensor/mount and retracting lens.
Maybe it's good tech, I just don't see what it brings to the user experience.
My personally, I would only be interested in one that completely gets rid if the hinge bump, and has a stylus. And it can't be 2 thousand dollars.
I grew up with train tracks right next to my backyard so I could believe that.
Not one piece of tech I own is reliable.
I work in tech.
I can be pretty confident when the problem is my device and the problem is the tech.
It's almost always the tech now.
Quality goes down. Prices go up. Gimmicks distract.
I have a permanent scar on my leg from that adventure, the phone looks brand new.
I'll get it fixed eventually I'm sure but most shops are afraid to touch it.
Kind of a flimsy piece of junk, but until it breaks, SO convenient and the screen stays really nice, needing less cleaning than one exposed.
But then they put below average cameras on it plus third party android updates
the phone went to AIDS research
and healthcare.
A smaller screen but a great phone. I still have it and it still powers up but can't use it as a phone anymore. Foldables are pocket friendly.
When I got an iPhone with one of those notches I hated it and now I literally forget it’s there.
I want omega widescreen.
The chunky phone/compromised tablet form factor looks dumb as hell, imo
We didn’t appreciate how good we had it.
Remember when a sidekick would vibrate along with the ringtones? Fairly certainly that’s now a Microsoft patent. https://ppubs.uspto.gov/dirsearch-public/patents/html/7136894?source=USPAT&requestToken=eyJzdWIiOiJhZGFiNzhlZi1lYTY3LTQyOTgtODA2NC0yNDQ3N2MyZGNhNWYiLCJ2ZXIiOiI0Njc3ZGM0Zi02MzNjLTQyNWYtOWFkYS1lNDNhY2M1Nzc2YTgiLCJleHAiOjB9
I like it. The crease is something I don't care about.
Would I go back to an iPhone if it were a flip phone? Sure.
*if Apple makes it sexy for Android hating US audiences...
The other 5% is the aspect ratio of the outside screen. I like the thin tall screen
I find it strange that people in this thread don’t understand the appeal of fitting a larger screen in your pocket. Browsing, reading etc feel fantastic on a larger canvas.
Also makes a great tripod
My democracy back.
I'm sure the plastic fold area is going to crack up, look very ugly and become defective in a short while.
