Somehow the "depluralizing" feels like the worst part. Not even Robert Dahl would say the U.S. is less "plural" than 25 years ago simply because fascists are criticized.

Literally every theory of liberal pluralism ever has had to come up with a special "no actually we don't mean you have to be nice to Nazis" explanation! It's a very conspicuous part of Rawls's theories, which are about "reasonable" disagreement! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Lol so I'm not familiar with it, but, on a cursory inspection at least it seems like they've done the "misparsing the syntax of the Critique of Pure Reason" thing?? That is to say, they mean to be criticizing "pure tolerance," whereas Kant most definitely did not mean to be criticizing pure reason 😅

Maybe, but Marcuse was himself German so it might have been intentional. In either case it is a very powerful work, in my opinion, which is unfortunately still out of print as far as I know.
