Missed opportunity for the exact asteroid diameter that would collapse into a black hole with the earth's combined mass, as bad news for the solar system.
Also the 100 trillion neutrino asteroids passing through the earth a second, although they mostly miss colliding.
Ahhhh, the fond fears of planetary annihilation by an asteroid that existed before the Tangerine Tyrant and the Muskrat took over our nation. As my grandmother used to say, that (fear) doesn’t amount to a hill of beans at this point. Just redirect it to the US only and spare everyone else.
Excuse me, sir. I would like to place an order for a 100 meter meteor, if and only if you can guarantee it to be accurately aimed so as to strike Mar-a-lago while Trump is in residence.
Mostly. It’s also a parody of our current political climate, the effects of misinformation, the oligarchs, and all the things. It’s actually hilarious.
You're a massive account, and you don't use #AltText? That makes you a barrier to the visually-impaired. Don't #AbleWall your content - let's make #AccessibleSky our goal! #UseAltText.
On their website where they post these, they have always included an extra joke in the alt text. For example, this one says “What’s weirder is that muons turned out to be INCREDIBLY cute.” Always thought it was a nice little Easter egg. Although, it doesn’t help an impaired reader understand it.
Yeah that's just another slap in the face to the visually-impaired, then. They can't see the image, check the alt - and it only muddles the matter further? That's just plain ignorant.
No, that's not the purpose of alt text. It actually hurts accessibility to use that way. Imagine you're reliant on screenreaders to experience the internet. Jokes in the alt text mean you cant read the comic! besudes, xkcd's little popup jokes aren't alt text, they're tooltips.
No, you were right. I was just suggesting the tooltip as it is on the website. I didn’t think about it when I said that, but the discussion made me realize the seriousness of the issue and I now agree that it needs to be more accessible. Even if the onus is on the platform not the individual users.
Under the current circumstances, I’m going to adopt this motto from a waitress at a restaurant that did exactly this one tourist holiday morning in ABQ, so long ago: “when you run out of eggs, all you can do is laugh.”
I think we have run out of eggs on this planet.
Asteroid collisions are often expressed as joules of energy with respect to the Hiroshima nuclear explosion. This released 10^ 18 joules of energy. The asteroid that caused Chicxulub crater, 66 million years ago, released 10^23 joules of energy. This is 100k times more energy than 10^18, and so on..
Be nice if they just drifted off course and never reached anywhere, once they have no more food, oxygen and are on the verge of dying, bang ! A meteor collides.
That would be SO funny if we were all dead and they had their little shitty getaway ships and they fly into the sun because something’s fucked up 😂 I mean he can’t even run a social media page without crashing that!
Read “survival of the richest.” They are planning for this knowing they’ll be the direct cause of whatever “event” happens that they need to survive. So they’ll make it, but good news is they will be stuck with just each other forever. That sounds like pure hell so makes me smile.
Come to think of it, I don’t know if they’ll make it or not. Trump may get sick of Elon, he is taking a lot of spotlight, there may be some serious in fighting before they even get started. We can hope anyway
How on earth was I not following @xkcd.com until now? My life quality is now quantitatively better. Unfortunately the character limit is insufficient to contain my full proof.
QED
And Elon Musk is the Autistic self aggrandising Tech billionaire (Mark Rylance) the president (Meryl Streep) thinks can save us all! Life imitating art?
because most objects orbiting the sun orbit near the same ecliptic plane, and earth is angled by 23 degrees to it, any asteroid is 50% more likely to hit somewhere within 23 degrees of the equator. it could hit outside that of course, its just a lot less likely
so basically its easier to predict along a latitudinal band of the earth, than a hemisphere. timing will ultimately make a huge difference if it hits and slight deviations in timing could move it to any hemisphere easily but not so easily outside the band of contact
Oh, turns out I actually misheard. The calculated impact path is between the Pacific and South Asia, but I interpreted that as being across the Pacific. This shows it better than I could describe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3A2024_YR4_risk_corridor.png
thats not correct, we dont have a good idea of where it will hit yet. if its impact with earth ends up changed by even an hour it would end up in a totally different location on earth (if it hits at all)
Sort of disappointed that there wasn't a spot on the chart corresponding to the size of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, but then not everybody looks for Paranoia deep cuts.
Easy little asteroid, take it slow, you will not want to miss the marvellous place we have all picked out for you to land comfortably on. Happy landing, we know you will love it.
Oh, yes, this is so correct, I had forgotten about that whole take me to your leader thing. Right, the next flying saucer I see I shall show them the way to the leader forthwith. Oh, wait, what if the space visitor just laughs and says, "That is not a leader."
So y'all know (and cuz this is really not something to be worried about)
1.) The asteroid is between 40-100m
2.) It has a less than 1% chance of hitting the earth
3.) If it does hit earth, it is most likely going to hit the ocean
Ummm, any agency that would be tracking asteroids are on the chopping block so there would be nobody to track it. And if they could track it, they've probably been forbidden from communicating with the public, soooo, it's been nice knowing ya.
Genuinely curious how long after being knocked out of orbit would it take for our atmosphere to become so messed up that we'd wind up like the remains of a tyrannid swarm.
O right I just looked it up as best I can figure, it would take as long as it takes for us to smash into a nother object(plait moon) are atmosphere would actually stay intact! Wow I reckoned the atmosphere would become unstable, how ever the atmosphere would be fucked, filled with particles poisen
I don't know of any established standard, but the "potato-to-sphere" transition is around 200-300 km, and the smallest known dwarf planet (10 Hygiea) is 425-450 km.
The general idea is pulled into spherical under its own weight. How spherical is a bit arbitrary, the looser the definition the more things get considered planets.
Then there's Psyche which is an asteroid believed to be a planet core remnant
A planet needs to be spherical and clear its own orbit.
A rogue planet doesn't have an orbit so the line between asteroid and rogue planet is "massive enough to be crushed into a sphere under its own weight".
Larger asteroids less likely to hit earth because of distribution, orbital dynamics, my lovely friend and neighbor, Jupiter. <3
All hail our big brother in the sky.
I wish, but unfortunately if it does hit, the specific latitude band, the risk corridor, would appear to be about 10 degrees to the south. (*Prof John L. Tonry)
Important information, seen something come in red hot, iron? It exploded in red hot sparks. Lovely. Space junk but I think a meteor that got hot and blew up, over Bondi Beach it was, very cool thing to see! Like magic.
Sadly it is projected to hit (if it does hit) somewhere in the southern hemisphere between South America and the Indian subcontinent because of the angle at which it will be approaching the Earth.
55 meter is the best estimate so far. Probably a Tunguska type event. Something like 8 megatons of TNT. And it will (if it hits at all, which is a small chance) come down over the ocean or desert with a high likelihood.
There was a time, not all that long ago, when something like this might cause me anxiety. However, I now think it might be exactly what this planet needs and deserves.
The only way this would be acceptable is if it landed on Washington D.C. and took Trump & company in the process. In that case, I’m good with the results.
But you gotta figure that in any given time he could be in Florida golfing. And who knows where ElMu will be at any given time.
The difficulty is it’s not him personally. It’s the Heritage Foundation minions, the corporate ghouls, the tech broligarchs and their respective goons, all too scattered.
Y'know if the end is coming via meteor, i'd at least take solace in knowing some multidimensional being is about to lose their bet because this Earth pool ball ain't gonna hit that black hole they called.
Sweet, sweet release! This must be how the dinosaurs felt, staring up at the blinding light of the asteroid. I wonder what’s next in 250 million years—pig or lizard people, destined to screw things up, go extinct, and leave it to us primates to again screw up, and go extinct again. ✊🏽
My guess would be somewhere between 1,000 and 10,000, because that's when the planet stops being the dominant force in the impact...
...except, even then, it bounces like a crunchy magma bouncey ball, staying round-ish, so it would need 2 impacts to flatten, and even that would be very luck based.
lol. It’s a joke. 😂😂😂 hey a guy can dream. I just want to see conservatives do don’t look up in real life. And seeing the earth blow up briefly is a kind of a weird kink of mine. 😞

I'm gonna follow you for this sista

Also the 100 trillion neutrino asteroids passing through the earth a second, although they mostly miss colliding.
The continental US is about 4600 km across for comparison.
It won't do a damned bit of good, but we can totally do it!
Blowing them up doesn't work in orbit. The parts just come back together. It's all still there.
Plus, it wouldn't do the damage you're thinking it would do.
Plus, you'd change the orbit in ways you can't begin to predict.
Ramming it head on decreases its speed and changes...
Figured the force of our modern nukes (particularly the Tzar Bomba) would be strong enough to destroy majority of meteor threats.
Plus, getting big bombs up there and then out of orbit would take very large rockets.
An impacter in small by comparison.
The one, DART test is not a simple, one she me shot solution to every incoming impactor.
Somewhere near both Presidents (Musk & Trump)
All those shooting stars I've seen were only a few inches wide?
Oh dear.

Here, I did this one for you:
(disclaimer: American)
*Laughs at your hubris in Jupiter*
I think we have run out of eggs on this planet.
Plus this one in the news lately would harm like, a city at most if it hit one. But more likely an unpopulated area or ocean

And really, fingers crossed he's in jail by 2032 anyway.

Naw... Here: 🪦
Damn. That's a word I haven't seen since...
... damn, I'm old.
You are all truly sick in the fucking head!
😢
Right where rising oceans are gonna go??
Does he think he is King Canute? Those insurance premiums against rising sea level flooding? 😁😁

Hmm, something to look forward to.
And seem to want it to hit a specific place in Florida?
Verdict: complies, allowed to post
They'll deny it, of course, and say that it is a Democrat plot.

Right into Alpha Centari.
So at least there is that
